William Rutherford

William Rutherford, 95, of Fayetteville, W. Va., went home Thursday, November 23, 2017.

He was the son of the late Fleming Alderson and Roxy Vickers Rutherford; also preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Licia Lynn Rutherford.

William was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during WWII.

He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Rutherford Pauley; son, William Alderson (Robin) Rutherford; grandchildren, Donald Pauley, William Joe Ballew and Lydia Rutherford; great grandchildren, Tirany, Elijah, Emma, Alyvia, Bella, Jase, Angelynn and Layla.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, at Graceland Memorial Park with Pastor Bub Anderson officiating. Military Graveside Honors will be conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

Jerry Wayne Means

Jerry Wayne Means, 73, of St. Albans went home to be with the Lord Monday, November 20, 2017.

He was a retired truck driver and mechanic. Jerry served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a longtime member of the Nitro Moose Lodge.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Kathleen Means; brother, Walter A. Means; and sister, Erma Dunlap.

He is survived by his daughter, Tina Ann Means Mitchell; sons Steve Means and Glenn Spurlock (Means); the mother of his children, Georgia; granddaughters, Ashley & Whitney Mitchell and Morgan & September Means; brother, Dallas; sisters, Pat Hopkins, Violet Eads, Linda Anselment, Carolyn Johnson, Becky Bowen and Darlene Gillerlain; and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was an outgoing person and everyone who met him loved him. His family meant the world to him, especially his four granddaughters. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25th, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek. Burial will follow at the B. J. Means Memorial Cemetery in South Charleston with military graveside honors conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Tim Graley

Tim Graley, 58, of Emmons, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at CAMC-Memorial Division, Charleston.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Winfred & Juanita Graley and sister, Nanette Maynard.

He was an auto mechanic at Lester Raines.

He is survived by his sons, Tim (Seema) Graley and David (Christina) Graley, brother, Michael,  sisters, Kathy Garretson and Jackie (Roger) Ross,  grandsons, Austin, Gabe, Xander, and Jack.

Services will be 1:00pm Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at Emmons Church of God with Pastors Mike Graley and Charles Hardy officiating.  Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery, Ashford.  Family and friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church.

John V. Bagley, Jr.

John V. Bagley, Jr., 91, of St. Albans went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 2, 2017.

He was born January 23, 1926 in Mammoth, WV to the late John V. Sr. and Jessie Bagley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eloise and several siblings.

John was a very caring man toward his kids. He loved golf and WVU football and basketball. He also loved to work on anything that needed to be fixed around the house. John invented a lot of things for his medical needs for which we called him the “mad scientist”! He was definitely a man’s man.

He served in the U. S. Army during WWII. John retired from Union Carbide with 37 years service. He was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church where he served on many boards.

John is survived by his daughter, Betty Sue Bagley; sons, John C. and Ralph E. Bagley; and sister, Mary Williamson.

Service will be 12:00 p.m. Monday, November 6, 2017 at Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans with Roger Jarrett officiating. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans, WV 25177.

Carol Dean Blackburn Dooley

Carol Dean Blackburn Dooley, 78, of Dunbar, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 29, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Delbert & Mearl McCallister and first husband W.J. “Jim” Blackburn II.

She retired as a director of medical records at the WV Rehabilitation Center.  She attended McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church and was a graduate of Duval High School.

She is survived by her husband, Jay Dooley; daughters, Rebecca Lynn (Mark) Litton and Rhonda (Richard) Rizk; grandchildren, Connor and Evan Adamson, Elliott Currence; siblings, Dave (Dean) McCallister, Linda (Tom) Settle, Dianah (Pat) Chandler, Jewel (Roger) McClure, Kathy (Bob) Judge, and Roger  McCallister; and sister-in-law, Rebecca Jane (Dan) Kuhns.

Service will be 1:00pm on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Ron Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends and family will gather 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday,  November 1, 2017.

Audrey Eva Stover Knight

Audrey Eva Stover Knight, 87, of South Charleston passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Valley Health Center in South Charleston.

She retired from Heart and Hand House in South Charleston.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus C. and Myrtle  Stover; siblings, Bessie, Nellie, Virginia, Madeline, Boyd & Delmer.

She is survived by her daughter, Sue (Ken) Lore of Davis Creek; son, Todd (Barbara) Knight of Peoria, Arizona; sister, Evelyn Bailey; grandchildren, Matthew (Shannon), Andrew, Tyler and Jessica; and 2 great grandchildren, Madilyn and Sawyer.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum with Pastor Gene Brooks officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Valley Health and Dr. Richard Hayes and his staff for all their wonderful care and compassion.

 

 

Larry Allen Sutphin

Larry Allen Sutphin, 73, of Hurricane, formerly of Tornado, passed away at home Thursday, October 19, 2017 surrounded by his loving family after a long illness.

He was born on November 20, 1943 in Mt. Carbon, Fayette County, WV to the late Ira and Matilda Kidd Sutphin.

Larry was a 1961 graduate of Duval High School and continued his education at Penn State.

He married the love of his life, Ann Chandler and thru much sadness and heartbreak they never parted for 54 years. Till death do us part.

Larry was preceded in death by his two loving sons, Brian Wesley and Larry Jr.; grandson, Aaron Combs; and 3 month old great grandson, Wesley Craig.

He was a Christian and a member of the Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Alum Creek.

Larry was an Air Force Veteran serving during the Vietnam Era.

He loved spending time hunting, fishing and talking with his late brothers, Melvin and Kennith.

Larry loved music and singing. He sang to anyone who would listen.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ann; beautiful daughter, Donna (Kirby) Simmons; brothers, Ira (Brenda) and Gordon; sister, Margaret Payne; babydolls, Kristen (Seth) Thornton, Jamie Craig and Heather Patton; grandson, Cameron Simmons; 16 great grandchildren who always put a smile on his face; and sister-in-law, Lenora.

He was loved by his “outlaw” family, the Chandler’s, and he loved each of them.

A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held Sunday, October 22, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 23, at the Independent Missionary Baptist Church, 2309 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Frank Chapman and Daniel Dent officiating.

Larry will be laid to rest with his boys at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

The family would like to thank hospice nurses, Erin, Holly, Britany and most of all Kristen and Donna for their care.

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more. Neither shall there be mourning or crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

Larry will be in our hearts forever.

 

J. Nelson (Jim) Browning, Jr., 92, of Charleston went home Thursday, October 12, 2017.

He was a retired Chemist with over 39 years service at the FMC Corporation in South Charleston.

Jim was a past member of Oakhurst Presbyterian Church where he taught ballroom dancing to singles; he had an outreach mission to shut-ins and nursing homes. Jim was also an active volunteer member of Kanawha Hospice.

He was also a member of the Chi-Beta-Phi Honorary Scientific Fraternity; a past Cub and Scout-master in the Boy Scouts of America; and a free- lance photographer during the 50’s – 80’s.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jhonce Nelson Browning, Sr. and Rose Ellen Hatfield Browning, six brothers and 2 sisters.

He is survived by son, Dr. Gregory A. (Debra) Browning of Ceredo, Kenova; daughters, Rosemary Anne (George) Downs of Warrenton, Virginia; grandchildren, Jennifer Browning Brooks, William Browning and Jeremy, Brodie and Micah Downs; and twelve great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 3:00 PM Sunday, October 29, 2017 at the Rock Lake Presbyterian Church, 905 Village Drive, South Charleston, with Pastor Rick McGuire officiating.

A reception will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to your favorite charity.

Vickie Marie Jennings Duarte

Vickie Marie Jennings Duarte, 67, of St. Albans, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Select Specialty Hospital, Charleston, WV.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Walter and Mary Marie Miller Jennings.

She was a a 1968  graduate of South Charleston High School and a member of Kanawha Baptist Temple.   Additionally, she was a  former employee of Elana Health in Dunbar where she retired in 2011.

She is survived by aunts, cousins,  her church family and the love of her life Chantilly, her toy poodle.

A memorial Service will be  held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Kanawha Baptist Temple, Mill Creek Road, Charleston, WV with Pastor Curtis Patterson officiating.  Burial will be at a later date at Kanawha Baptist Temple Cemetery.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at 1:00 p.m.

 

Betty Gay Huffman

Betty Gay “Toto” Huffman, 80,  of St. Albans went home to be with our Heavenly Father Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at Hubbard Hospice House – West, South Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hassell & Alma Huffman from Alkol, WV.

She was a retired employee of Vanguard Financial Services.

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Healy, son, Mike Huffman, siblings, Anna L. Jordan Taylor, Genevieve Ryan, Roger (Anna) Huffman and Steve Huffman, four grandchildren, Deborah Rae (Jeff) Remeikas, Leanne, Melissa and Katelyn Huffman, four great-grandchildren, Rozlyn, Jillian, Lora and Maverick.

Service will be 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating.  Burial will be at later date at Orchard Hills Memorial Gardens, Yawkey.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.
