Virginia Ann Cassell Vickers Adkins, 85, of Alkol, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 23, 2012. Born on September 26, 1926, “Ginny” was the eldest child of the late John Joseph Cassell and Julia Catherine Melicherik Cassell. In addition to her parents, on May 17, 1960 she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Vickers, later was daughter, Margaret Kay Vickers, granddaughter, Samantha Ann Workman, grandson, Thomas Frank Vickers III, husband, Wallace “Guy” Adkins, sister, Francis Ana Cassell and brother, John Joseph Cassell II.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Barbara McClure, Christy (Ronnie) Linville of Alkol, Carol (Danny) Workman of Rock Creek, Tommy (Linda) Vickers of Woodville, Joey (Tammy) Vickers of Alkol, and Sandra Sue Jordan of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren: Marty (Dawn) McClure, Melody (Donny) Dunlap, Melissa (Jamie) Parker, Ronna (Chris) McCallister, Jamie (Kim) Linville, Danielle (Woddy) Hunter, Leslie (Mark) White, Misty (Wes) Jackson, Joshua Vickers, Joey (Rachel) Vickers, and Jennifer (Adam) Runyan; great grandchildren: Drew, Maggie, Dalton, Payton, Lakynn, Brayden, Braxton, Elliana, Alli, Shawntel, Chloe, Shayla, Kensley, Mylee, Elija, Ethan, Kenzie, Kyszek, Ty, and Mason; brother, Lawrence (Carole) Cassell of Strongsville, Ohio; sisters: Irene (John) Cantley and Susan Matheny all of Beckley, Judith Cassell of Cleveland, OH, Toni (Ron) Hatcher of Shady Spring, Cathy (Jim) Bair of Brunswick, OH, and Pat (John) Hall of Columbus, OH; sister-in-law, Doris Cassell of Nolanville, Texas; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Ginny was a member of the Bear Branch Church of Christ, having been a faithful Christian since 1948. Regardless of what the day held, Ginny found time to read her Bible daily, always finding comfort in God’s Word.
Ginny began working at the early age of twelve, helping out at Nick Pantopli’s Store in Stickney, WV. She would have been happy and content to be a wife and mother, but a mining accident took her husband, Frank, and forced her to find a job. In 1957, Ginny began working at the Dee-Mure Bra Factory in Hamlin. She worked there 21 years, until the factory closed in 1978. She then began working in the Lincoln County School System as a cook at Martin Elementary until its closure sent her to Woodville Elementary. When the school closed in 1997, she was then assigned to Griffithsville Elementary and cooked there until she retired in 2002 to selflessly care for her mother.
Ginny’s greatest pleasure, outside of her children and grandchildren, was fishing. She loved to sit on a river bank and fish. She always had her fishing pole and tackle box in the back of her truck just in case she saw a good spot to throw in her line. Not only did she love to fish but she wanted her children and grandchildren to love it, too. Grabbing a loaf of bread, some pepperoni and bologna, she would take off with one of her grandchildren and head to the lake or river. She especially enjoyed going to her camps in Wirt and Greenbrier Counties with her fishing buddies, Wydolene Clark and Avis Wheeler. She also love to play cards with her family and held the title “Queen of Pollock Rummy.” Ginny was also a frequent visitor at Helen Miller’s. Whenever Helen called and said she had a new shipment in, Ginny was always there to help her sort out the new load. Ginny was very talented in quilting. As soon as she found out there was a new great grandchild on the way, she would begin working on a quilt. She wanted to make sure she had a baby quilt ready to greet the new arrival. Ginny truly looked forward to her daily visits with Bill and Gary Hager. They not only brought her a great meal from the Morrisvale Senior Citizens Community Center but always found time to sit and talk with her for a while.
Mother, when we called you, you always listened. When we asked a favor of you, or needed a shoulder to lean on, you were there. We were not always perfect, but thank you for making us feel so very special. You will forever have that special place within our hearts. That special place just for Mom’s like you, because we love you so. Your love, your strength and your guidance will forever be in our hearts.
Services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday March 27, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Minister Brian Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at the Vickers/Hager Family Cemetery Alkol. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 PM Monday and prior to the service at the funeral home.
I always really enjoyed being with Ginny and helping with Julie I know she will be greatly missed by so many I was so blessed to get to know all of you all 🙂

A sincere and heartfelt ‘Thank You’ for letting us know a little more about Ginny’s life… it reminded us of The Dash Poem by Linda Ellis… because there is soo much more (between the dash) to a person’s life that never gets said in an obituary or on the engraving of the headstone. Dear Cousins–My sincere condolences on the loss of your Big Sister, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin and Friend. That’s a long list of titles to achieve in the world, and they’re the best kind of titles to have. Another title Ginny held with extreme distinction was Daughter, in the way she spent herself caring for dear Aunt Julia. She didn’t know it, but she’d been in my daily prayers for a long time, and given where she is now, I hope I’m in hers. I deeply regret that I can’t be there with you for her funeral because I’m having a somewhat difficult recovery from recent surgery, but I’ll be there in spirit. –Cousin Russ
