Doris Hartwell

Doris Shelton Green Hartwell of Saint Albans, entered eternal rest Friday, June 6, 2014 at Sweetbriar of Dunbar after a long illness.

Doris was born November 17, 1925,  in Mountain State Hospital, Charleston, to now deceased parents,  Olive Foreman Shelton and William MacCorkle Shelton of Clay.  Her son,  Ronald B. Green, her brother, Wilson Thomas Shelton and wife, June Williams Shelton also predeceased her.

She attended Kanawha Valley Schools and graduated from Charleston High School in 1943, then attended Southern Seminary & Junior College, Buena Vista, Va., and later West Virginia State College. She retired from Union Carbide as a senior administrative secretary after 30 years of service.

Doris was an active member of St. Albans First Baptist Church, former Sunday school teacher, Deaconess Board, served many offices for American Baptist Women local and past state officer of American Baptist Women. She was a spectator and active participant in sports, Bible studies, sewing, knitting, handwork and most of all she loved the card ministry that the Lord encouraged her to keep current.

She is survived by her husband and soul mate of 40 years, Doyle Kelva Hartwell; son,  Daniel S. Green (Sandi) of Okatie, S. C., also entrusted and cherished son,  Mark Alan (Shauna) Hartwell of Houston, Texas; and also entrusted and cherished daughter, Anita Hartwell Sims (Doug) of St. Albans;  and a surviving niece (just like the daughter she always wanted), Sheri Shelton Meadows; grandchildren,  Stacey (Brad) Rayburn, Jason (Lana) Green, Brian Green, Zachary Green, Sara (Brian) Jones, Rebecca (Eric) Travis, Natalie Sims, Whitney (Travis) Hayes, Caleb Hartwell, and  Katie Hartwell; great-grandchildren, Tyler Rayburn, Connor Rayburn, Sarah Green, Anna Bell Green, Hannah Miller, Madison Jones, Mallory Jones, Christopher Travis, Benjamin Travis, Clair Travis, Andrew Travis, and Julieette Travis.

Her wish was  to be cremated. There will be a memorial service 1 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at St. Albans First Baptist Church, 6th Ave.  and 2nd Street, St. Albans, with Pastor Joel Harpold officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cinerarium.

The family will receive friends form 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Ben McCallisterBenjamin Franklin McCallister 46, of South Charleston, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 due to drowning while vacationing at Virginia Beach.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years,  Jo; children,  Allison (Jestin) Gravely, Marina, Zack and Courtney McCallister; grandchildren,  Jacob McCallister, Haley and Jason Gravelyl;  mother,  Virginia McCallister;  brother,  Russell Lee McCallister; sisters,  Belinda Fox, Pamela McMillion, Dreama Lenn and Sarah Golden and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, June 10, at 6:00 PM at the Crooked Creek Church of God, Greenview Road, South Charleston with Pastor Mark Thaxton officiating. Burial will follow at the McCallister Family Cemetery,  Alum Creek.   The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the church.

 

 

Julia “Judy” Kathryn Hill Carter, 84, of Charleston passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014.

Judy was born in Grapevine, WV on December 31, 1929 to the late John and Evelyn Baldwin. She retired from the WV State Capital after serving 22 years in the Personnel Department of the WV Department of Highways.

Judy also preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years Rex Hill.

She is survived by a son: Robert “Bob” D. Hill and wife Dianna, of Charleston; grandchildren: Julie Wallace, of Raleigh, NC; Dusty Hill, of Hurricane; and Destiny Newcome, of Cross Lanes; great-grandchildren: Michael Granger, of Raleigh, NC; Davian and Alania Hill, of Hurricane.

Private services were held at the Forks of Cemetery Alum Creek.

Mark Wayne McClure

Mark McClureMark Wayne McClure, 51, of South Charleston died Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV.

He was a long time employee and inventor with the family business, Walhonde Tools,  Inc., located in Alum Creek; a member and past president of the Alum Creek Lions Club; a member of the Dunbar Masonic Lodge AF & AM;  served as past commander of Kanawha Commandry No. 4  Knights Templar; a member of the Tyrian Chapter No. 13 Royal Arch Masons; a member of the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple; and  was a believer in Jesus Christ.

Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul George and Glen and Gladys McClure.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Jane; three children, Brittany, Cailin and John; parents, Gary and Kay McClure; siblings, Christy (Mark) Kiser, Matthew McClure and Marta Tankersley; grandmother, Loraine George and many other family members and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Tommy Roberts officiating.  Burial will follow in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek, with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by the Dunbar Masonic Lodge No. 159.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday at the funeral home.

John Holovic Jr.John Joseph Holovic, Jr., 75, of Charleston, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 30, 2014, at home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Holovic, and his daughter Teresa O’Connor.

He was a retired clerk and mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service and a member of the Bible Center Church, Charleston,. He served in the US Air Force from 1957 – 1961.

He is survived by daughter, Cathi Holovic Richards of South Charleston; 2 sons: Daniel J. Holovic, (Valeska Schrader) of Beckley, Scott E. Holovic of Raleigh, NC; stepson, Mark Holtsclaw of Fishers, IN, and Step-daughter, Melondy Mooney of Charleston; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Service will be 12:00 Noon  Friday, June 6, 2014 at Bible Center Church 100 Bible Center Drive, South Charleston with Pastor Chad Cowan officiating. Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 on Thursday at the church.

Clara GriffithClara E. Griffith, 87 of South Charleston, went home to the Lord Friday, May 30, 2014 at Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Charles and son Chuckie.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Faith Baptist Church at St. Albans.

Clara is survived by her; daughter Jill Gillispie, sons Paul Griffith and Duane (Pamela) Griffith, sisters, Rachel (Jimmy) Waldron, and Ella Rae (Eldon) Fitzwater, grandchildren; Brian, Kem, Paula, Hope, Erin and Ashley, great grandchildren; Nathaniel, Morgan, Natalie, and Gannon, great-great granddaughter; Kynzie.

Service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday June 3, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Frank Chapman and Eldon Fitzwater officiating, Burial will follow in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Emogene Newman

Emogene NewmanEmogene Newman, 84, of Alkol, went home to the Lord Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Hospice West, South Charleston, after a long illness.

She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oral and Dona Stone Clark; daughter, Rita A. Maynard; brothers, Harold, Ralph, Tommy and Jackie Gene Clark.

Emogene is survived by her husband Bill of 60 years; daughter, Karen (David) Smith Watson; sons, Aaron (Julia) Newman and Nathan (Emily) Newman; brother: Ronnie (Debbie) Clark; sisters, Anna Lea Smith and JoAnn (Jimmy) Walls; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, June 1, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Randall Kinder officiating. Burial will follow at Clark Family Cemetery, Flat Creek. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Francis Sue Williams

She is survived by her daughter, Hattie (Bill) Rock of Alum Creek.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Colum Hunt, parents: Sidney and Mearl Allen and two sisters and 3 brothers.

She was retired from the Diamond Chain Co., Indianapolis, IN. She was a Christian.

She is survived by 3 sisters: Linda R. Harper; Pearl & John Joyce and Imogene and David Fisher; two brothers: Ronald and Sharon Allen and Calvin Allen ; step-son: Daniel and Kellie Hunt; step-grandchildren: Peter and Taylor and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00pm, Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with one hour visitation prior to the service. Burial will be at the Anderson Cemetery at Pine Grove, WV.

Carl PauleyCarl Edward Pauley, 76, of South Charleston died Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Hubbard Hospice West, South Charleston, after a long illness.

He was a retired auto mechanic.

He is survived by children   Jody Hensley, caregiver, Tina Smith, Linda Thornton, Sharon Cobb, Carl Pauley II, Becky Parker and many grand and great grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Marie Michaelson, Barbara Tackett, Debbie Barker and Phyllis  Baldwin.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, May 27th, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.  The family will receive  friends  one hour prior to the service.
