Janice Loretta Clark Stowers, 83, of Winfield, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 19, 2022, at home. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Harold Stowers, and parents, Mirrell & Hallene (Miller) Clark and brother William Gene Clark.

She is survived by her brother, Larry (Linda) Clark, sisters, Judy Hale and Mary (James) McCormick, uncle, Freddie Miller and many nieces and nephews that she loved as her own children.

Janice was a faithful member of Winfield Baptist Church (prior to covid). She will be remembered as a kind, loving and generous aunt and great aunt. As an elementary teacher and principal, she was one of the best. She loved playing Rook with friends and family and also had a love for traveling.

Service will be 1:00pm Thursday March 24, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors David Johns and Dakota Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

Family & friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Betty Jean Dunlap

Betty Jean Dunlap, 88, of Sod, went home to be with the Lord on Friday March 18, 2022, at Valley Health Village, South Charleston.

Betty was a lifetime member of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church where she was well known for singing her favorite song “The Family Bible”, was a Sunday school teacher, and led the little believer’s choir for many years. She also worked at the Alum Creek Public Library for years.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Donald Ray Dunlap, her baby daughter, Kimberly, and her son, Donald “Coco” Dunlap; parents, Meddie and Mary Ketchum Graley; brother, Chuck and Jr. Graley, sister, Aunt Kat Pauley.

She is survived by her children, Meddie “Jigs” (Patty) Dunlap, Charlene (Jacky) Dunlap, Peggy (Jerry) Marker, Russell and David Dunlap; brother, Bobby Graley of Watha, NC; grandchildren, Debbie (John) Estep, Donna Dunlap, Donald Dunlap, Kim (Chad) Board, Kristy Wright, Kari Roberts, Donny Dunlap, Chris Dunlap, Paula (Brett) Matthews, Jason (Lorie) Dunlap, Jerrick (Brooke) Marker, Heather (Chad) Antill and Justin Dunlap; great grandchildren, Tiffany, Tim, John, Derick, Ericka, Allie, Patrick, Cecil, Dorothy, Kelley, Caleb, Connor, Katelyn, Payton, Lakynn, Brayden, Braxton, Emily, Joshua, Koree, Cody, Jerrick, Rayleigh, Addison and James; great great grandchildren, Sophia, Rowan, Berkley, Laney, Preslyn, Maddie and Delaney, Maddie and Maverick, and her faithful canine companion Bailey.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday March 22, 2022, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco.

The family would like to thank and recognize Dr. Scott Smith and the staff at Alum Creek Medical Center for all their help.

  

Elizabeth Carol Webb

Elizabeth Carol Webb, 75, of South Charleston, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmitt & Mildred Payne Neece and infant daughter, Kimberly.

Elizabeth is survived by her son & daughter-in- law, Vencil & Bridget Webb; brothers, Larry Neece, Dennis Neece, & Charles Neece; many nieces and nephews.

She will be laid to rest with her husband at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Margaret Jane “Peggy” Alford

Margaret Jane “Peggy” Alford, 90, of South Charleston, born August 27, 1931, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Peggy was a member of Alum Creek Church of the Nazarene. She was the owner/operator of Alum Creek Beauty Shop for 40 yrs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George H. Sr. and Mellissa J. Winters Stafford; husband, Elvin S. Alford, Jr.; twin sister, Lissie Egnor; brother, George “Sonny” Stafford, Jr.; three grandsons, Jeremy, Marc, and Michael.

Peggy is survived by daughters, Karen Sparkes of South Charleston and Margie (Robert) Childress of North Carolina; sons, David Alford of South Charleston and Terry (Tereasa) Alford of Sod; sister, Candy (Bob) Good; 8 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and numerous great great and great great great grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastors David Mitchell & Ruth Ann DeLong officiating. Entombment will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alum Creek Church of the Nazarene, 2368 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV 25003 for the Pennies from Heaven fund.

Carmen C. Cochran

Carmen C. Cochran, 73, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord and her daughter, Kacey Estep, Tuesday, March 15, 2022.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 22 years, Gary; daughter, Dacia, who embodies her mother’s strength; grandson, Travis, who was the light of her life; brother, Mark (Sue); sister, Mickey (Buel); her best friend of more than 50 years, Virginia Gillenwater; nieces and nephews, Stacy (Wayne) Bowman, Shannon Gillenwater, Shane Padilla, B.J. Gillenwater; and other family and friends who will greatly miss her.

She was preceded in death by her beautiful daughter, Kacey Estep and her parents, Bennie and Freda Padilla.

Carmen was a born-again Christian and a faithful member of Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Alum Creek. She retired from Kanawha County Schools.

Carmen loved Gary deeply. He was her knight in shining armor and he treated her like a princess. He encouraged her to keep living after Kacey went to be with Jesus. Their love was beautiful and enduring. She loved Dacia fiercely and was so proud of her. She watched over her with motherly eyes, heart, and mind until the end. Travis was her absolute world. She would have breathed for him. In her eyes, he could do no wrong.

Carmen loved walking, especially with her best friend, Virginia. They walked thousands of miles together, around the loop at Midway Elementary, on Priestley Ridge, on Cobb’s Creek, carrying a stick to ward off barking dogs because Virginia’s short legs couldn’t keep up with Carmen’s. On their walks, no doubt they prayed for their family, their church, and their friends and talked about the kids in Carmen’s classes that she loved so dearly. She served faithfully in her church and loved working with the children. She was passionate about children and compassionate for them. She wanted to help them, teach them about Jesus and make their lives better. She loved the beach and sharing vacations with her family. She loved facials, pedicures, beautiful clothes, pretty lipstick, and the color mauve. Her favorite lipstick was Wine with Everything.

You never visited a home cleaner or more welcoming than Carmen’s. She washed down her walls more than most people wash dishes. She worked hard and loved hard. Carmen was loyal. She was a fighter. She was a survivor. If you knew her, you knew her strength. Most importantly, Carmen loved Jesus with her whole heart and wanted everyone she knew to love Him too.

Services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Daniel Dent officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

A special thank you to Carmen’s wonderful caregivers, Sherie Stanley, Debbie Quintrell, Alice Meadows, Rena Kirby, and Lisa Allen who showed her so much love, cherished her, and kept her comfortable to the very last breath.

Casey Allen Holtsclaw

Casey Allen Holtsclaw, 40, of Southside, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2022, at home from a heart attack.

Casey was born June 15, 1981, in Charleston, WV to the late Bonnette Hinton and Richard Holtsclaw. He worked at Twin Rivers Hardwoods, in Southside. Casey was known for his love for his family and friends. He would do anything he could for anyone he met. He will be missed by all that knew him. He was a great son, brother, father, and uncle.

Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Joshua Holtsclaw.

He is survived by his daughter, Zoei Hill-Holtsclaw and his brother, Christopher Holtsclaw.

Services will be private, please contact family members for more information.

Charles “Larry” Johnson

Charles “Larry” Johnson, 63, of Goose Creek, SC, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Trident Medical Center, North Charleston, South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward and Nora Ellen King Johnson.

He was owner of Aaron J’s Fleet Maintenance and was a master diesel mechanic.

Larry is survived by his wife of 20 years, Tammy Johnson, children, Jared Lee Johnson (Ashley), Rhonda Mae Lucas, and Samuel Aaron Johnson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aubree Nicole Johnson, Austin Lee Johnson and Juliana Lucas.

Service will be 6:00pm Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV, with Rev. Roger Ross officiating. Family & friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest donations to assist in offsetting the funeral costs.

James Larry Gillenwater

James Larry Gillenwater, 75, of Hurricane, WV was called to his eternal home on March 5th, 2022, after a long illness. Larry was born April 10th, 1946, to the late Zeddie Gillenwater and Virginia Lee Brooks Gillenwater.

He was a devout Christian who served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. He also served as deacon of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Sod, WV and again at Good Shepherd Southern Baptist Church in Scott Depot, WV. He was a 1964 graduate of Duval High School. He retired as E8 Master Sergeant from the Army National Guard as the state food service advisor with 22 years of service and retired from DuPont Belle plant as safety supervisor with over 30 years of service. Post retirement, Larry worked as an OSHA regulatory training instructor for Kanawha County and as a transporter for Enterprise. He was a longtime member of the Alum Creek Lions Club and spent many years singing with The New Creations quartet based out of Alum Creek. Besides spending time with friends and family, Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved both hunting & fishing.

Left to cherish his memory are sister Rebecca (Robert) Dixon of Greenville, SC; Brothers- Thomas (Mary) Gillenwater of Sumerco, WV; Stephen Gillenwater of Greenville, SC; Jonathan (Marsha) Gillenwater of Port Wentworth, GA; Joseph (Paula) Gillenwater of Hollywood, SC; Children- Scott (Brittney) Gillenwater of Tornado, WV; Rachel Duncan of St. Albans, WV; Adam Gillenwater of Hurricane, WV; Brooke (Josh) Lemasters of Hurricane, WV; Grandchildren- Brian (Rebecca) Gillenwater; Kayla (William) Nehme; Luke Gillenwater; Jacob Lindroth, Holland Mathews, Baxter Duncan, Zachary (Tori) Duncan, Mason Duncan, Alexander Duncan, Gracie Gillenwater, Claire Gillenwater, Mia Gillenwater, Haydon McIntosh, Keagan McIntosh, Rogan McIntosh, Joshua Gunnoe, Payton Lemasters; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and loved ones.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Bryant Bowman officiating. Military Rites to follow by Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of support. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff at Hospice Care who helped take exceptional care of Larry in his final days on this Earth.

Opal Dean Holstein Cummings

Sunday, March 6, 2022, Heaven gained a holy angel.  Opal Dean Holstein Cummings, 85 years 4 months and 23 days old, of Yawkey, WV, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the Hubbard Hospice House West after a short illness.  

She was born October 14, 1936, the daughter of Leonard Holstein and Stella Smith Holstein at home in the little town of Ivy Branch.  She was a caregiver helping any of her family that was in need until she started her own little family. 

Opal was a proud and wonderful Homemaker, Wife and Mother to her beloved family.  She was so inspirational always living life on the straight and narrow path never straying away from God’s path.  She had recently told us that she has read the Bible completely over 30 times in her life.  She was the type of person to help anyone in need and would want nothing in return.  Opal was a 45+ year member of Porter Fork Baptist now Yawkey Missionary Baptist Church. 

Opal was preceded in death by two stillborn sons, her husband and love of her life for 53 years Larry Russell Cummings who she deeply loved and cherished.  Her brother Lloyd Holstein, sisters Irene Johnson, Bernice Headley, and Marie Grass. 

Opal is survived by her three sons that she loved more than life itself, John (Amanda), Timmy (Tina), and Joe (Crystal), five grandchildren that she adored, Steven (Jonah) Wilson, Emma Cummings (Chaz), Josie Cummings (Tyler), Ethan Cummings, and Megan Cummings and two great-grandchildren that she held near to her heart, Bryson Wilson and Riley Wilson.  She is also survived by one sister, Marjorie Johnson of Danville and a group of nephews and nieces that she loved each and every one of them.  She also had plenty of friends that she loved talking to on the phone, a great neighborhood that she lived in for over 45 years and special people at Kroger’s at Danville where she went grocery shopping once a week. 

Service will be 2:00pm Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Darrell Searls and Rev. Rickie Holstein officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.      

Elizabeth Ann Cummings

Elizabeth Ann Cummings, 70, of Sumerco, WV, left us on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at the home of her daughter, Lisa Pauley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Basil “Junior” Cummings.

She was a homemaker.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Gary) Pauley, and son Ray (Angela) Byrd, and brother, Walter (Nancy) Harless. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sarah, Eric, Nikki and Anita, and three great-grandchildren and one on the way.

A graveside service was held at noon on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
