Howard Stanley Rabel

Howard Stanley Rabel, 84, of South Charleston, born on the 24th day of May in 1928  went home to the Lord Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at home after a long illness.

He was a Korean War Army Veteran and retired from FMC after 35 years of service.  When Stanley was not at work he was often found in his garden or at his camp in Pocahontas county enjoying his favorite past times of hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Erma and Wesley Rabel.

Stanley was a devoted husband to his wife, Anna Louise Rabel for 59 years;  a loving father to two daughters, Mary Haynes and Evelyn Starcher; he was blessed with four grandchildren, James Starcher, Jessica Beane,  Jennifer Haynes and Travis Haynes; two great grandsons, Gavin Beane and Jackson Chandler.  He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Midkiff, and family.

Funeral service will be 12:00 pm Friday, November 9, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Charles Kidd officiating.  Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park.  Friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Our family is very appreciative for the care hospice provided in our time of need.  We would also like to extend our love and gratitude to Tonia Hatfield and Lynn Miller for their love, care and support.

Staff Sgt. Scott R. Newman

Staff Sgt. Scott R. Newman, 27 of Greenville, North Carolina formerly of Charleston, WV. entered his eternal home Tuesday October 30, 2012 at Greenville, NC.

He served 7 years in the U.S. Marine Corp, joining the Marine Corp during a time of war. He received numerous decorations including; Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.  Army Achievement Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Certificate of Commendation (4th AWD), Meritorious Mast (3rd Award) and letter of appreciation (2nd AWD).

He is survived by his parents; John and Kim Newman of Charleston, sisters; Lisa Newman of New York City and Mary (Shawn) House of Hempstead, Texas, brother; Daniel (Emily) Newman of Greenville, South Carolina, grandfather; Paul Kiihn of Amarillo, Texas, nephews; Thomas and Kenneth House and several other family members and friends.

Service will be 1:00 PM Thursday, November 8, 2012 at Cross Lanes Bible Church, 5442 Big Tyler Road, Cross Lanes, WV, with Pastor Dave Buckley officiating. Burial will follow at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar, WV.

Family and friends will gather from 11:00 am till 1:00 pm Thursday at the church.

Virginia Justice McCormick

Virginia Justice McCormick, 86 of Sod went home to the Lord Tuesday October 30, 2012 at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her son Timmy McCormick and parents Bernie and Audrey Barker Justice brothers Kayo and Tuck Justice and sisters Rita Pauley and Wanda Justice.

Virginia taught headstart in Lincoln County for 26 years.

She is survived by her daughters; Pat (Duck) Mosteller of Sod, Yvonne Beam of Jane Lew and Tanie McCormick of Sod, and sons Jim (Mary) McCormick of Hurricane and Tom (Ann) McCormick of Kentucky. 11 grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandson and special friend Eloise Graley and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 pm Saturday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Misty Dawn Bias

Misty Dawn Bias, 34, of Parkersburg, WV formerly of Ridgeview, died Monday, October 29, 2012 at home.

She is survived by her parents, John and Eula Bias; sister, Lavern Carpenter; brother, Daniel Bias and special nephew, Austin Bowles, grandmother Ida Bell Mullins. Aunts and uncles, Mike and Shirley Bias, David ( Patty) Bias, Timothy (Ruth) Bias and Dixie (Ronald) Barrick, Turley Ray (Brenda) Kinder, Frenchy (Peggy) Mullins and Mary, and many cousins.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Sunday, Nov. 4th  at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Richard Harrold officiating.  Burial will follow in Walker-Kinder Cemetery, Ridgeview.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made toward the funeral service.

Opal Faye Barker

Opal Faye Barker

Our beloved Memaw, Opal Barker, 93 of St. Albans, went to be with Jesus on Saturday, October 20, 2012.

Born July 10, 1919, she was one of eleven children.  Her loving husband of 65 years, Howard C. Barker, preceded her in death as well as her stepchildren Betty Hornoff and Harvey Barker.

Opal was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to many.  She loved baking goodies and making crafts for family and friends.  She operated her own beauty shop in St. Albans for 22 years where  she made many dear friends. She loved her church family and served as deaconess at The Crossing, where she was a faithful member.  She loved helping with the children at the church.

She is survived by her children, Rev. Bob (Peggy) Barker of Kinston, NC; Marcella “Peggy” (Ross) Spurlock of St. Albans; Patti (Al) Ruebush of Hurricane and Ruth B. Byrnside of St. Albans; 22 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 13 great great grandchildren.

A celebration of Opal’s life will be held 2:00 pm Monday, October 22nd,  at The Crossing, 2031 Harrison Avenue, St. Albans  with Pastor’s Stan Smith and Allen Stewart officiating.  Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.  Friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Hilda Enid Hermann Taylor

Hilda Enid Hermann Taylor, 100 years, passed on Friday,  October 19, 2012 at Charleston Gardens Memory unit.

Hilda was born in Pana, Illinois on February 27, 1912 shortly after her parents, Luise and Johann Hermann, arrived in the USA from Germany.  Her family fled Germany in 1911 traveling by ship in steerage.  Her mother was 5 months pregnant during the voyage.  Her family settled first in Pana, Illinois to work in the Peabody coal mines.  Later, they moved to Detroit, Michigan to work in the auto and related industries.  She had five siblings, all have preceded her in death.

In her adult life, Hilda worked at the International YWCA as an administrative assistant to the director.  This is where she met her husband, Cloyde English Taylor, an engineer with the Chrysler Corporation.  They were married in October 1931.  Hilda and Cloyde had two children, a daughter and her husband, Claudia and Jack Workman in Alum Creek, West Virginia and a son, John Taylor in Ranchos De Taos, New Mexico and his companion, Consuelo Gonzales.  Her granddaughter and husband, Jennifer and Chris Haase, live in Jenks, Oklahoma.  Her first great grandchild, Zachary Haase, was born in February 2012.

For nearly 30 years the Taylor family lived in Royal Oak, Michigan.  After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Pinellas Park, Florida.  She was widowed in 1985 and continued to live in Florida until 2002 when she moved to West Virginia to live in Edgewood Summit.  In 2009, she had a fall and moved to Charleston Gardens assisted living.

Hilda was a Methodist.  She was creative and artistic.  She was an accomplished gardener, seamstress, and cook.  She enjoyed playing pinochle, watching birds, taking walks.  She was an attractive woman.

The family wishes to acknowledge the staff at Charleston Gardens and wonderful care they gave to Hilda.

Hilda has been cremated.  Her ashes will be placed near her husband’s ashes at the Workman Farm.  There will be no service.  Please remember her to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W. Charleston, WV 25312.

Dorothy Mae Kinder

Dorothy Mae Kinder, 72, of Charleston went  to be with the Lord Monday, October 15, 2012 at home.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, David; daughter, Laura Stanley; two sons, James R. And David Lee Kinder; three sisters, Margie Stone, Wanda Mossage and Sandra Pierce; and brother, Stevie Stone.  Nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating.   Burial will follow in Estep Kinder Cemetery at Ridgeview.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mark Wyane Roberts

Mark Wayne Roberts, 44, of Charleston passed away Saturday, September 13, 2012 at CAMC Memorial  Division after a short illness.

He worked at Thomas Memorial Hospital for 23 years in Housekeeping.  He was also an avid deer hunter and loved his cars and music.  He was preceded in death by his father Lloyd Roberts and sister Jeannie Moore.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years Linda Roberts; daughter Nicole Roberts; mother, Susie Roberts; 4 siblings, Susan Winnings, Michael Roberts, Sandy Jones, and Wanda Johnson; 2 Special family members Alan (Diana) Chandler; good friend & co-worker, Ronnie Harvey; and several nieces and nephews, family and friends.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday September 18, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, with Pastor Burt Hall officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Family and friends will gather from 6-8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Bernard B. Dunlap

Bernard B. Dunlap, 69, of Ely Fork Road,, McCorkle, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, October 12, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Katherine Dunlap.

He is survived by his sister, Loleta Justice of Sumerco and brother, Charles “Bo” Dunlap of Alum Creek.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Janet Lovejoy for giving Bernard more love and care than we could have ever asked for; and also Bernard’s  favorite buddy, Russell “Russ” Ashworth, for all the love and laughter he gave. We all loved Bernard and he will be dearly missed.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, October 15, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.   Family and friends will gather from 4 to 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home.

 

Dixie “Mommy D” Kidd

Dixie “Mommy D”  Kidd, 78 of Alum Creek went home to the Lord peacefully  Friday October 5, 2012 after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Hurshel (Hurk) Kidd, father and mother Andrew and Susan Purdue Turley, brother Toy Turley and sister Louise Elkins.

She was a homemaker, a giver of love, and a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ.

She is survived by her son Todd (Tammy) Wheeler of Hurricane, sisters Elsie (Ray) Pauley of Alum Creek and Margaret Jackson (Norman) of Dunbar, grandchildren Latasha, Shyenna and Bella,  also she is survived by Ellen Sowards who was know as the daughter she never had and her children Aaron and Micah Sowards.

She touched many lives.

Service will be 3:00 PM Sunday October 7, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Minister Richard Runyan officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery Alum Creek. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service Sunday at the funeral home.
