Jackie Lee Miller, 61 of Griffithsville, was called home by the Lord Thursday, November 22, 2001.

He was formerly a beltman in the coal mines and attended the Joes Creek. Baptist Church.

He is survived by: Wife: Nola; 1 Son: Todd of Sod, WV; 3 Daughters: Debra Tawney and Judy Smith both of Beaz Fork (Griffithsville), W V Lisa Burton of Elkview, WV; Mother: Marie Calhoun of Clio, Michigan; Sister: Rachel Nowak of Sussex, New Jersey; 4 Grandchildren: Matthew and Ashley Tawney, Devon Smith, Erica Miller.

Services will be Sunday, November 25, 2001 at 3:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Lester Bell and Pastor Billie Cline officiating. Burial will be in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call from 7 to 9 on Saturday, November 24, 2001 at the funeral home.

Frank Allen Sims, 60 of Spring Hill, departed this life Monday, November 12, 2001 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, with complications from cancer.
He was born in Bailey, Virginia and was educated in Hinton and Sandstone High Schools and attended West Virginia State College. He was retired from Union Carbide where he worked as a draftsman. He was also a lead guitarist with the late Bill Browning and the Hilanders. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earshel and Ozella French Sims.

He is survived by his: Wife: Linda Kitchen Sims; 2 Sons: James Edward Sims and Michael Sean Sims both of Spring Hill; 1 Step-daughter and son-in-law: Tina and Rick Mandrake of Ravenswood; 1 Step-grandson: Hayden Mandrake of Ravenswood; 2 Sisters and brother-in-laws: Freda and Frank Humphreys of Powhatan, Virginia; Delda and Steve Furrow of Hinton; 1 Brother and sister-in-law: Curtis and Barbara Sims of Nimitz; Many beloved nieces and nephews;

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Wednesday, November 14, 2001 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Benny Pauley and Pastor Claude Holley officiating. Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.

He was a truck driver for Kroger.

Carol Ann Newcomer, 53 of Kernersville, North Carolina, formerly of Alum Creek, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2001 at home after a short illness.

She was the widow of Terry P. Newcomer. She was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church and the Donnelly Fork Beagle Club. She was also preceded in death by her father, Carter Ruby and her brother, Robert Ruby.

She is survived by her two daughters, Christi Smith and Denise Newcomer, and one grandson, Andrew Lavinder all of Kemersville, North Carolina. Mother, Barbara Ann Ruby of Sod. Two brothers and a sister-in-law, Frank Ruby of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Richard and Lynn Ruby of Sod. One sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Francis Holton of Salt Rock. Sister-in-law, Helen Ruby of Sod. Mother-in-law, Ruby Newcomer of Ruthdale. Several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Wednesday, November 7, 2001 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Larry Johnson officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

He was an auto parts fork lift operator for Superior Dye Casting in Cleveland, Ohio. He was an Army veteran.

Virginia Catherine Breedlove Gillenwater, 79, of Alkol, died Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at home after a long illness.

She was a member of Sycamore Grove Baptist Church, Alkol.

Dr. Willie H. Childress

Dr. Willie H. Childress, 51, of South Charleston, died Saturday, October 27, 2001 in a hunting accident.

He was a life long resident of South Charleston, he attended George Washington High School, Moms Harvey College and Ohio State University College of Optometry.
After graduating he joined his uncle, Dr. Ross G. Childress at the Childress Eyecare Center in South Charleston, where he practiced for 27 yeazs. He was a member of the American Optometric Association and the West Virginia Optometric Association.

Dr. Childress had retired from the 130`” Air National Guard with the rank of Lt. Colonel after 20 years of service.

Dr. Childress had been on the Board of Directors of Kanawha Country Club and City National Bank. He was an avid golfer and hunter. He was a member of Berry Hills Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston.

He is survived by his wife Barbour, daughter Bambi, and son Bill all of South Charleston, his mother Lula Belle Childress of South Charleston, brother Gary W. Childress of Hurricane, and sister, Linda Creech of Kingwood, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, Lakin W. Childress.

Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, South Charleston on Thursday, November 1, 2001 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Marilyn Hedgpeth officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 from 6 to 9 PM at the Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.

He was retired from Frankenburgers Department Store. He was an Army Veteran of WW II.

Gatha Quentin Burchett, Jr., 52 of Loveland, Ohio, formerly of St. Albans, died Sunday, October 14, 2001 at home after a long illness.

He was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways, was a graduate of Shepherd College and received his MBA from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. He was also a member of Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans.

He is survived by his Mother: Reta Burchett of Loveland, OH; 2 Sisters and Brother-in-law: Lola Burchett, Ellen and Terry Taylor all of Loveland, OH.

Services will be held at the Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, on Thursday, October 18, 2001 at 11:00 AM with Dr. Leroy Keeney and Rev. C. T. Bullington officiating. Graveside services will beat 3:30 PM at Mountain View Cemetery, Clifton Forge, Virginia. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.
