James Larry Gillenwater

James Larry Gillenwater, 75, of Hurricane, WV was called to his eternal home on March 5th, 2022, after a long illness. Larry was born April 10th, 1946, to the late Zeddie Gillenwater and Virginia Lee Brooks Gillenwater.

He was a devout Christian who served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. He also served as deacon of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Sod, WV and again at Good Shepherd Southern Baptist Church in Scott Depot, WV. He was a 1964 graduate of Duval High School. He retired as E8 Master Sergeant from the Army National Guard as the state food service advisor with 22 years of service and retired from DuPont Belle plant as safety supervisor with over 30 years of service. Post retirement, Larry worked as an OSHA regulatory training instructor for Kanawha County and as a transporter for Enterprise. He was a longtime member of the Alum Creek Lions Club and spent many years singing with The New Creations quartet based out of Alum Creek. Besides spending time with friends and family, Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved both hunting & fishing.

Left to cherish his memory are sister Rebecca (Robert) Dixon of Greenville, SC; Brothers- Thomas (Mary) Gillenwater of Sumerco, WV; Stephen Gillenwater of Greenville, SC; Jonathan (Marsha) Gillenwater of Port Wentworth, GA; Joseph (Paula) Gillenwater of Hollywood, SC; Children- Scott (Brittney) Gillenwater of Tornado, WV; Rachel Duncan of St. Albans, WV; Adam Gillenwater of Hurricane, WV; Brooke (Josh) Lemasters of Hurricane, WV; Grandchildren- Brian (Rebecca) Gillenwater; Kayla (William) Nehme; Luke Gillenwater; Jacob Lindroth, Holland Mathews, Baxter Duncan, Zachary (Tori) Duncan, Mason Duncan, Alexander Duncan, Gracie Gillenwater, Claire Gillenwater, Mia Gillenwater, Haydon McIntosh, Keagan McIntosh, Rogan McIntosh, Joshua Gunnoe, Payton Lemasters; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends and loved ones.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Bryant Bowman officiating. Military Rites to follow by Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of support. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff at Hospice Care who helped take exceptional care of Larry in his final days on this Earth.

Sunday, March 6, 2022, Heaven gained a holy angel.  Opal Dean Holstein Cummings, 85 years 4 months and 23 days old, of Yawkey, WV, went home to be with her Lord and Savior at the Hubbard Hospice House West after a short illness.  

She was born October 14, 1936, the daughter of Leonard Holstein and Stella Smith Holstein at home in the little town of Ivy Branch.  She was a caregiver helping any of her family that was in need until she started her own little family. 

Opal was a proud and wonderful Homemaker, Wife and Mother to her beloved family.  She was so inspirational always living life on the straight and narrow path never straying away from God’s path.  She had recently told us that she has read the Bible completely over 30 times in her life.  She was the type of person to help anyone in need and would want nothing in return.  Opal was a 45+ year member of Porter Fork Baptist now Yawkey Missionary Baptist Church. 

Opal was preceded in death by two stillborn sons, her husband and love of her life for 53 years Larry Russell Cummings who she deeply loved and cherished.  Her brother Lloyd Holstein, sisters Irene Johnson, Bernice Headley, and Marie Grass. 

Opal is survived by her three sons that she loved more than life itself, John (Amanda), Timmy (Tina), and Joe (Crystal), five grandchildren that she adored, Steven (Jonah) Wilson, Emma Cummings (Chaz), Josie Cummings (Tyler), Ethan Cummings, and Megan Cummings and two great-grandchildren that she held near to her heart, Bryson Wilson and Riley Wilson.  She is also survived by one sister, Marjorie Johnson of Danville and a group of nephews and nieces that she loved each and every one of them.  She also had plenty of friends that she loved talking to on the phone, a great neighborhood that she lived in for over 45 years and special people at Kroger’s at Danville where she went grocery shopping once a week. 

Service will be 2:00pm Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Darrell Searls and Rev. Rickie Holstein officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.      

Elizabeth Ann Cummings

Elizabeth Ann Cummings, 70, of Sumerco, WV, left us on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at the home of her daughter, Lisa Pauley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Basil “Junior” Cummings.

She was a homemaker.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Gary) Pauley, and son Ray (Angela) Byrd, and brother, Walter (Nancy) Harless. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Sarah, Eric, Nikki and Anita, and three great-grandchildren and one on the way.

A graveside service was held at noon on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Ronald Lee “Buck” Mooney, 85, of Liberty WV went to be with the Lord, Friday, March 04, 2022.

Born September 18, 1936, in McCorkle, WV. He served his country with honor in the US Navy during the Korean War. After departing the US Navy, he served 33 years with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier before retiring.

Buck loved his wife and family endlessly. He was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a kind and loving man that loved to joke with everyone he met. He seldom met a stranger. He was an active member of Maranatha Baptist Church which he considered his extended family. Buck touched a lot of people’s lives with his service to the Lord, his fellowship, and his constant smile. He will be missed by many.
Buck was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Elizabeth Clark Mooney, sister, Bessie Caruthers Huff, brothers, Harold Clark, Walter Jr. Mooney, Carl “Sug” Mooney, Howard Mooney, Paul Mooney, Robert Mooney, and his grandson Brian Long.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane, and his children; Paul Glenn Mooney, Ronald Lee II (Tina) Mooney, Elizabeth Long (David Witt), William Roy Mooney, Nancy Grace (Michael) Johnson, Laura Lane (Bill) Chapman, and Mary Jane Mooney

9 grandchildren; Ronald “Ronnie” III Mooney, Rachel Bisden, Jeffrey Mooney, Jonathan Long, Sarah Johnson, Paula Mooney, Tommy Chapman, Sierra Bostic, and Chelsea Setliff.

12 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and his brother Jack (Donna) Mooney.

Funeral service will be at 1200 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Maranatha Baptist Church, 1 Maranatha Acres, Sissonville, WV with Pastor Kevan Bartlett officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at the Hunt Cemetery, Frame, WV. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.

William Clyde “Bill” Anderson, 72, of Alum Creek, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022, at CAMC Hospice.

Bill retired as a salesman from Trinity Rebar and had worked for Waco and Peerless Block. He served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was also a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and attended Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Rudie and Mary Belle Randolph Anderson; sister, Ada Randolph; brothers, Herman “Red” Anderson, James Earl Anderson, Gene Anderson, and Ronnie Anderson.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Teresa; sons and daughters-in-law, Brian & Melanie Anderson, Jason & Sara Knight; sons, Travis Knight, Liam Anderson; daughter, Ashley Anderson; sister, Wanda & Herb Harper; grandchildren, Levi, Alex, Jessica, Wyatt, Emily, Zachary, Kimberley Taylor; great granddaughter, Christina; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 7, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Celebrant H.R. Whittington officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Barry Joe Pack

Barry Joe Pack, 52, of South Charleston passed away Thursday, February 24, 2022, at home.

Barry was a self-employed contractor.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Pack and sister, Joy Pack.

Barry is survived by his children, Madison and Owen Pack; mother, Ethel Pack; brothers, Mark (Frances), Kevin (Samantha); and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service for immediate family was held at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston with Danny Huffman officiating.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 14, 2022, at Bible Center Church, South Charleston with Pastor Richard Thompson officiating.

Dale Carmel Barker

Dale Carmel Barker, 81, of Alum Creek, WV, passed away on Monday, February 28, 2022 at 
Hubbard Hospice House.  

He was a retired coal miner from Hobet Mining and a member of the UMWA.  He also was employed at R.C. Bottling Company with 20 years service and was a member of the Teamsters Local #175.

Dale was a kind and giving man that loved to joke with everyone he met.  He seldom met a stranger but if he did they parted as new friends.  He loved his wife and family endlessly and was so proud of his kids and grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard & Kathleen Adkins Barker, and brothers, Karen and Rick Barker. 

Dale is survived by his wife, Sue of 60 years, children, Sonia Barker, Kim Cesaretti, and Samantha (Brian) Painter, brother, Blane (Belinda) Barker, sisters, Brenda (Gene) Flowers and Martha (Steve) Hargis.  He is also survived by three grandchildren, Nicholas Dale Cesaretti, Pierce Scott Cesaretti, and Emily Grace Painter and one great-granddaughter, Layla Rae Cesaretti.

Service will be 1:00pm Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, with Pastor Jack Kinder officiating.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service

Jackie Eugene Dunlap

Jackie Eugene Dunlap, 59, of Sod, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Jackie retired as a warehouse supervisor from the State of WV ABCA with 31 years of service. Jackie said he “cut his teeth” at The Longhorn in Sissonville, where he was a bartender and musician. He played with many bands over the years, most recently, Jack Dunlap & The 2 Dollars Short Band. He was a trout fisherman, enjoyed hunting, and loved the mountains of WV and WV history.

He was preceded in death by his father, Burtchel Eugene Dunlap; brother, Kelly Jean Dunlap; and sister, Dawn Rita Dunlap.

Jackie is survived by his mother, Evelyn Tyler Dunlap and stepfather Bo; fiancé, Cathy Moran; granddaughter, Lilly Moran; sister, Candice Workman; brother Cecil Rhodes; niece, Courtney Dunlap; and special friend, Karen Holestin.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Jane Janette Tyler Hitchcock

Jane Janette Tyler Hitchcock of Hamlin was born August 7th,1937 and passed away February 21st, 2022, at Cabell Huntington Hospital from a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer & Hattie Clark Tyler, stepmother, Louise Tyler, children: Danny Hitchcock, Janie Smith, Ralph “Willie” Hitchcock, grandchildren: Dustin & Khloe Hitchcock, siblings: Mary, Norene, Elmer Jr., Kelly, Margie Mae & Jackie Joe.

Jane was “Mom” to Mark of Fl, Rick Eskins of OH, Dennis and John of WV, she adopted and raised two grandchildren Dennis Elliot and Candy Jeffries both of Hamlin, WV. She was “MawMaw Jane” to 20 grandchildren along with numerous great and great, great grandchildren.

She is survived by siblings: Evelyn Dunlap of McCorkle, Opal Collins of FL, Reba Gibson, Wilma Tyler, and brother Hassel Tyler all of Alum Creek. Aunt Jane had too many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors to count. She loved them all.

MawMaw Jane was a resident of the Stone Trailer Court in Hamlin, WV for nearly 30 years. She never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. She was loved and will greatly be missed.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 28, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Craig Gillenwater officiating. Burial will follow at Holstein Cemetery, Dartmont. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Cephas J. Nicholas

Cephas J. Nicholas, 82, of Tornado, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February 14, 2022, at his nephew’s home.

Cephas retired from WV Steel, where he was affectionately known as “Tater Bug”. He was also a former shoe salesman, truck driver, and schoolteacher. He created a gospel group called Harbor Lights, which became his beloved Christian Echoes in the early 1970’s. Cephas was a deacon at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and drove the church bus. He would literally drive anywhere to pick someone up to attend church. It didn’t matter how far away they lived. He never had children of his own, but many of those bus kids called him popaw. He was there for them whether they needed a ride to church, work, or summer trips to the pool.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lillian Nicholas; wife, Irene Miller Nicholas; and brother, Dennis Ray Nicholas.

Cephas is survived by his nephew & caregiver, Wayne & Rebecca Nicholas of Tornado; great nephew & caregiver, Steven & Alysia Nicholas of Logan; nephew, Brian & Kim Nicholas and their children Carson, Carter & Cara of Michigan; niece, Paula Fleck and her children Ashley Adkins and Allyson Fleck of Florida; special cousin/sister Linda Maines of Tennessee.

Funeral service organized by Chevrah Lomdei Mishnah yizkor services will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Craig Gillenwater officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills, Yawkey. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
