Gary Franklin Hudson

Gary Franklin Hudson, affectionately called “Unc”, 68, of Charleston, passed away at home Monday, November 3, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer attended by his loving caregiver and sister, Delma Hudson.  He was born on December 19, 1939.

He was retired from McCormick Spices Company and Berry Hills Country Club.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Lib Pryor and Beulah Oxley Hudson; sisters, Agnes Hudson, Arietta “Reedy” Hudson, Ellen White and Doris Hayes; one niece Charlotte Hayes Slonaker.

Additional survivors include his nephew, Glenn Hudson and  wife, Becky; their children Ashley and Allen; six nieces, one nephew and their families and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 6, 2008, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Clarence Hutton and Basil Hudson officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.   The committal service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, at French Cemetery, Davis Creek.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gary’s name to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Drive, Charleston, WV 25311.

Eva Mae Harper, 65, of St. Albans died Monday, November 3, 2008 at home after a long illness.

She was the owner operator of Eva’s Collectables in South Charleston.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Rita Walls (Mark) of Alkol

Son: Kevin Dunlap (Stephanie) of Sod

Mother: Rosie Treadway of Sumerco

Sister: Barbara Cook of Cross Lanes

Services will be 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey.  Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Norman J. Nolan

Norman J. Nolan, 75, of New Martinsville, died Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

He was a member of the operating engineers, and was an Army Veteran of the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart and a Korean Service Medal.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Ida D. Adkins Nolan

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law: Norma Jean & Danny McEldowney of New Martinsville.

Grandchildren: Justin & Duncan McEldowney

Several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Butch Leadman officiating.  Burial with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 at Alum Creek will be in Midkiff Cemetery, Sumerco.  Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Alma L. Harley

Alma L. Harley, 74, of Clendenin, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went home to be with the Lord Thursday, October 30, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clara and Garfield Green, her brothers Russell, Clyde, Guy, Cheryl, Edward and Lowell Green and her sisters Daisy Edwards, Mary Goode and Maxine Chandler.

She was a faithful chaplain of VFW Post 8516 in Elkview Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a Christian and a member of the Church of God in Elkview.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Charles “Chuck” Harley, her children; Donna Youmans and her husband Robert of Zephyrhills, Florida, Kathy Arnott and her husband Timothy of Nitro, Cindy Cavender and her husband Larry of Charleston, Donald Brogan and his wife Brenda of Cross Lanes. Step-children; Carol Barnes, Peggy Baugher, Ronald, Brenda and David Harley and Donna Sours all from Fredrick, Maryland.

Grandchildren: Steven Breeden of Tampa Florida, Timothy Arnott and Shannon Arnott both of Cross Lanes, Sean Breeden and his wife Mary of Daytona Beach, Florida. Glen Brogan of Cross Lanes, Ryan Cavender of Charleston, Ric Cavender and his wife Beth of Charleston.

Great-grandchildren: Jacob, J.D., Levi and Silas.

Brothers and sisters; Eloise Brumfield of Massillon, Ohio, Virginia Hughart of North Carolina, Danner Green of Alum Creek.

Lydia and Silas, Ryan and Rolena Seabolt and their children David Shawn and Erica whom she loved like her own children and grandchildren.

Ellen Pauley

Ellen Pauley, 71, of So. Charleston went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House Charleston after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents Archie and Lois Cantley, son Bob Pauley, brothers: Bob and Jerry Cantley and baby sister Linda Sue.

Ellen graduated from Washington District High School in 1955, salutatorian of her class, a 21 year employee of Union Carbide Tech Center. She was member of Bible Center Church, Kanawha Valley Genealogical Society, Daughters of the American Revolution and was the Griffith Family Reunion Historian.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Dan; Son and daughter-in-law, Tim and beth Pauley, grandchildren: Joshua and Rachel Pauley; Sisters: Shirley Kerr, Rosalie (Steve) Lipscomb and Mary Katherine (Jack) Herr; Brothers: Arnold (Evie), Pat (Lee), and Jim Cantley.

Ellen had a passion and love for children’s ministry. She devoted much of her life sharing with children her love for Jesus Christ.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, relative and friend. She dearly loved her grandchildren. Ellen had a love for being outside and always had a beautiful flower garden. She was a true example of Gods grace as she endured these past years of health problems. She had a strong desire for life and amazed us all.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday October 28, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road  Alum Creek with Chaplain Pete Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the Turley Family Cemetery at So. Charleston. Visitation will be 6 to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Maryland L. Moore

Maryland L. Moore, 84, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Golden Living Center, Glasgow.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Tiny” Moore, daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Harold Hoy; parents, Irvin and Stella Hudson Songer; brothers Monroe, Harold and Garnett Songer; sisters, Gladys Means, Evelyn Hudson Adkins and Vada Jean Snyder.

She was the oldest active member of Ivydale Baptist Church, a faithful and devoted Christian.

She is survived by daughters and son-in-laws, Gloria and Gary Hall of Charleston, Judith and David Waldron of Burnsville and Patricia and James Duncan of Durham, North Carolina; Sister, Phyllis Thomason of Orlando, Florida.

She also leaves behind nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren,  two great- great grandchildren  and three step great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Tuesday October 28 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Clarence Hutton officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park Dunbar. Friends will gather from 7 to 9 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Charles (Chuck) B. Sayre

Charles (Chuck) B. Sayre 52 went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct 21, 2008 at his home in St Albans after a long illness.

He was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School and worked at Myers Transfer Moving and Storage as an estimator. He was preceded in death by his father, Kelly Clark Sayre.

Surviving is his mother: Sally Sayre Riester of South Charleston

Sister: Karen McClure of  South  Charleston

Brothers: Eddie Sayre of Leon and Walter Sayre of St Albans

Nieces & Nephews: Crystal, Jacqueline, Jason, Jared, Lindsay & Jacob

Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 24, 2008 at the Curry Funeral Home , 2097 Childress Rd., Alum Creek, with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating.  Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens at Cross Lanes.   Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Michael Edward “Mike” Dunlap, 27, of Sod died Sunday, October 19, 2008.

He was an employee of Appalachian Railcar Services.

He is survived by:

William E. “Bill” Holstein, 46, of Charleston went home to the Lord, Sunday, October 19, 2008 after a short illness.

He was a musician, performed with many bands in the Charleston area and was secretary/treasure of the Musicians Union in Charleston. Bill was also a member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church Alum Creek.

He is survived by his son, Willie Miller of Charleston; brother, John Holstein of Charleston; three sisters, Retsy (Jack) Matheny of Liberty; Sheila (Dick) Kelley of Ocala, Florida; and Pam (Elmer) Woods of Alum Creek.

A memorial service will be 2:00 PM Friday, October 24, at Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church at Alum Creek with Pastor Jody Pistore officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek is assisting the family with arrangements.

James E. Cantley

James E. Cantley, 83, of Brounland, went home to the Lord on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 after a long illness.

He was a member of the Briar Creek Baptist Church and was retired from Libby Owens Ford Glass.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby; two sons, Roger and Joe Cantley; half-brother, Eddie Cantley; two sisters, Mary Burdett and Louella White; three grandchildren, Jimmy, Rachel and Little Joe Cantley; three great grandchildren, Evan, Katie and John Braden Cantley; special nephew, Vincent Cantley.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.  Burial will be held in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek.  Friends may gather on Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
