James “Pete” Huffman

James “Pete” Huffman, 84, of Sod, WV, passed away at home on Thursday, November 11, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, James
& Marie Griffith Huffman, son, Bill Huffman, and four siblings, Agatha, Rosa Lee, Terry and Jolly.

Pete was an active member of WV Fox Hunters Association (Fox Hunting) winning State Competitions in WV, OH and KY and on the National level.

He was a retired member of Pipefitters Local #625 and was a Duval High School graduate of the Class of 1957, where he participated in all sports.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue, daughter Tina Humphries, grandchildren, Elijah (Brandy) and Hayley Humphries, great-grandchildren, Makala and Josey, daughter-in-law, Lisa Martin and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00pm on Sunday November 14, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastors Richard McCallister and John Mathews officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lahoma G. Nunn

Lahoma G. Nunn, 77 of Sod, went home to be with the Lord on November 10, 2021, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Lahoma was a member of Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church and was a 1962 graduate of Duval High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Nunn; parents, Cleston and Maxine McClure Adams; sister, Louise (Ted) Tackett; and her brother, Danny Paul Adams. Brothers in law, Stan Ziminick and David Smith, sister-in-law, Ann Adams. Mother and father-in-law, Lorane and Kyle Nunn.

She is survived by sisters, Lucille Ziminick and Jewell (Richard) Belcher and her brother Harley Adams, sisters-in-law Lisa Adams Saunders, Linda (Mike) Adams, and Wanda Smith; her sons, Stephen Nunn, and Eric (Beth) Nunn; grandchildren, Cassondra Karnes (Robert Garrison) and great grandchildren, Adrianna and Tormund; Whitney (Carl) Taylor and great grandchildren Carter and Wrigley; David (Sierra) Nunn and great grandchildren, Piper, Tahlia, Lucas, Annabelle, Lydia, and Iris; Hannah Nunn and great grandchildren, Aleigh, Haylie, and Malachi. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and burial will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday November 17, 2021 at Hayzlett Cemetery on Garretts Bend with Rev. Mark Ruby officiating.

Frederick Eugene Thomas

Frederick Eugene Thomas, 84, of Alum Creek passed away Monday, November 8, 2021, at CAMC Memorial Hospital. 

Fred was a retired welder for Kanawha Stone with many years of service.  He loved to bass fish, hunt, and play guitar. 

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Lucille Thomas; son, Christopher; and sisters, Leona and Carol. 

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sandra Stotler Thomas; daughters, Grace Oxley, Lisa Thomas, and Patricia Sue Thomas; sons, Jamie Jones and Charles Thomas; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. 

Memorial Service 2:00pm Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV.   

Timothy Burl Allen

Timothy Burl Allen, 60, of Sumerco, WV, died in his daughter Carrie’s arms on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Geneva Allen, wife, Shelia, two grandchildren and seven siblings. 

He was a construction worker.

He is survived by his daughters, Carrie Kane, Faith Allen and Tiana Palmer, sons, Timothy Burl Allen, Jr., and Travis Roy Allen, sister, Goldie Messer, brothers, Steve and Wyson Allen, 19 grandchildren including Molina along with Carrie was when he took his last breath.

Graveside service will be 3:00pm Friday November 12, 2021 at Anderson Cemetery, Sumerco.

Janice Carroll James

Janice Carroll James, 84, of Marmet, formerly of Olcott, passed away Monday, November 8, 2021, at CAMC General Hospital.

Janice was predeceased by husband, Jerry; son, Jack; granddaughter, Cami Jo; sisters, Nadine, Vivian; brothers, Dale, Dayton, Eddie; and parents; Dola and Bertha Parsons.

She is survived by daughter, Janice Pettry (Aaron); sons, John James (Kris), Frank James, and J.D. James (Tami); grandchildren, Matthew, Jeremiah, Joshua, Tim, Thomas, Cheyenne, Nicholas, Brittany, Jordan, Samuel, Ryan, Scott, Beth, Jacob, Dylan, Nikki, Kristi, Jack, Brittney, and Andrea; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; sisters, Sharon and Bonnie; brothers, Roger, Jimmy, and Jewel; special friends, Evelyn Lowman and Vicki Casto.

Service will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 12, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Randell Kinder officiating. Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery, Ashford. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mary Ellen Miles

Mary Ellen Miles, 83, of Griffithsville, WV, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, November 4, 2021, at home surrounded by family and friends.

Mary Ellen was a member of Yawkey Missionary Baptist Church and was retired from Rite Aid Corporation.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Wade Vickers and parents, Maynard and Emmer McCallister Wade.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Warren Miles; children, Craig (Janie) Miles and Melissia (Steve) Clay; grandchildren, Heath Miles, Heather (Nic) Ransom, Ashley (Craig) Martin, and Jaimie (Brice) Tucker; great-grandchildren, Ridge Miles, Tyler Martin, Caroline Martin, and Willow Tucker. She is also survived by her sister, Paula Higginbotham and brother, Keith (Karen) Wade.

The family would also like to give a special “thank you” to Monica Linville, Melissia Sigmon and caregiver Julie Barnette.

Service will be at 3 pm Sunday, November 7, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Eloise Virginia Dunlap Justice, 96, of Alum Creek, formerly of McCorkle, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Hospice House in Charleston after a short illness.

A member of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church, she was a living example of the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31. A wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, and friend to all.

Eloise was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Kyle “Dusty” Justice; parents, Marvin and Vennie Tyler Dunlap; and infant son, Rodrick.

She is survived by daughter, Valerie (Gary) Smith of Alum Creek; grandson, Eric (Melissa) Smith of Griffithsville; great grandchildren, Sydney (Matthew) Jarrett of Liberty, Evan Smith of Pocatalico and his girlfriend Paige Curry, Katelyn (Landin) Harper of Griffithsville, Ethan (Kelsie Morrison) Brogan of Griffithsville, Megan (Tristin Loftis) Brogan of Yawkey; six great great grandchildren, Dylan and Carson Harper, Annastyn Morrison, Haidyn Loftis, Cora and Raiden Jarrett.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2021, at McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Isaiah Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Shelva Jean Dillon

Shelva Jean Dillon, 83, of Yawkey, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 31, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Gladys Landon and her husband, Noah Dillon.

She is survived by her daughters, Iris Jean Dillon, Sherry Joan Dillon (DeWayne), and Cynthia Ann Dillon (Bill); sons, Jack Daniel Dillon (Exie), Bill David Dillon (Debbi) and Noah B. Dillon; brothers, Mike Landon (Shirley) and Walter Landon (Debra).

Shelva is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson.

Service will be 2:00pm, Friday, November 5, 2021 at Curry Funeral Home, with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memorial Gardens, Yawkey, WV. Family and friends will gather two hours prior to the service.

Margaret Wade Vickers

Margaret Wade Vickers, 81, of Alkol, WV, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, October 23, 2021, at home surrounded by family and friends.

Margaret was a member of Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church, and was a retired customer service representative from AEP.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny and her son James; parents, Maynard and Emmer McCallister Wade.

She is survived by her children; Jeffrey (Debbie) Vickers and Monica (Joey) Linville; grandchildren, Clint Good, Andrew (Morgan) Graley, Austen (Danielle) Vickers, Riley, Jamie and Erica Vickers; great grandchildren, Lilly Good, Fallon and Jett Graley.  She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Ellen (Don) Miles and Paula Higginbotham and brother, Keith (Karen) Wade. 

The family would also like to give a special “thank you” to caregivers, Kenny and Betty Loftis and Melissa Sigmon.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating.  Burial will follow at Stone Cemetery in Alkol.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Jacqueline Fay Means

Jacqueline Fay Mills Means, age 72, departed peacefully for Heaven on Saturday, October 23, 2021, after a long illness. Jackie was a graduate of the Charleston School of Beauty Cosmetology Program and a Sunday School Teacher for the Pine Top Church of God in Charleston, West Virginia.

Reunited with Jackie in Heaven are her beloved daughter, Michele Dawn Means; parents Juanita Thomas Harper and Brice Mills; brother and sister, Mitt Franklin Tye and Juanita Evelyn Spears; father-in-law James Madison Means; great-niece Caitlin Means; and brother-in-law Harold Walker.

Jackie is survived by: Clayton Means, her husband of 53 years; son Christopher Means (wife Rachel); Grandsons Tyler, Kody, and Alex Means; Mother-in-Law “Mom” Jenetta Opal Means; Sister Polly Christine Crews (husband Charles) and her children: David Riggs (wife Erica and son David A.W.), Billy Riggs (wife Tasha and son Bryson), Christy Penderman (husband Kenneth, daughter Deja Hi’Ilandi and son Jayden), and her niece Tia Shelton; brother-in-law Kim Means (wife Cynthia); brother-in-law James Means (wife Barbara); sisters-in-law Patricia Walker and Tina Russell (husband William); niece Angela Means (husband Mark Hicks and son Zachary Hicks); niece Chanon Richardson (daughter Emma Richardson), nephew Phillip Means (sons Brandon and Colton and daughter Darienne Means); niece Melissa Means (sons Mikel and Dillon Means and daughter Brianna Starcher), nephew William D. Russell (wife Meghan and daughters Ella and Lyla Russell); Aunts: Pearl Moles, Edna Mace, Rose Madden, Doris Ramsburg, and Claudia Sammataro; dear friend Kim Kidd.

Jackie was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who gave selflessly of her time. She treasured her family and enjoyed gathering together over a holiday meal, relaxing on the beach, teaching Sunday School, spending time with her dog, Ginger, and playing the autoharp and guitar. Jackie had a kind heart, a good sense of humor, and a laugh that would make you smile. A blessing to everyone who knew and loved her, she will be deeply missed.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek, WV, with a burial to follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey. Pastor William Buddy Mairs will officiate. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
