Frederick H. Songer, Jr., of South Charleston died Monday May 29, 2000 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

He was a disabled laborer and attended Ruth Community Church and was a life long resident of Kanawha County.

He is survived by: Wife: Carolyn Lee Songer 2 Sons: Frederick H. Songer, III of South Charleston, WV; Donald Lee Songer of South Charleston, WV; 1 Daughter: Betty Lee Lowe of South Charleston, WV; 3 Sisters: Mary Price of South Charleston, WV; Reba Shew of Charleston, WV; Jo Ann Bailey of Spring Hill, WV; 3 Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, June 1, 2000 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Benny Pauley officiating. Burial will be in Songer Cemetery, Ruth, WV. Friends may call on Wednesday, May 31, 2000 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Gilbert Emery Mellen, 79 of St. Albans, West Virginia, died Saturday, May 27, 2000 at Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston, West Virginia after a short illness.

He was the son ofthe late Walter Emery and Catherine Malick Mellen, was born on March 16, 1921 in Akron, Iowa. He was also preceded in death by his sister Cleah Hams Boggs. Mr. Mellen was a Phi Betta Kappa Graduate of Iowa State University, worked on nuclear projects at the University of California at Berkley, and at Oak Ridge Tennessee during World War II. In 1983, he retired from Union Carbide after 37 years of service as a chemist. Mr. Mellen was a faithful and dedicated member of the Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans, where he served many years as a Sunday School Teacher, Organist and financial Secretary and on April 30, 2000 was awarded a plaque commemorating his s0 years as church organist.

He is survived by his: Wife: Dorothy Layman Mellen; 2 Daughters: Deanne Mellen Moore of King, NC; Catherine Mellen LeGrand of Houston, TX; Son: Gene Emery Mellen of Lansing, MI; 6 Grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Highlawn Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 31, 2000 at 11:00 AM with Dr. LeRoy Keeney and Pastor Dr. Joe Hyde officiating. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, family request that memorial contributions be made to the Highlawn Baptist Church Building Fund 2304 Jefferson Ave. St. Albans, West Virginia 25177. He had formerly worked as a meat cutter for Holtz Meat Processing in Charleston and he attended Trinity Baptist Church at Ruth.

Rose H. Tedder, 71, of Charleston died Tuesday, May 23, 2000 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, So. Charleston, after a long illness.

She was retired from the Coonskin Dairy Bar Charleston, after 31 years of service. She attended Oakridge Bible Church.

She is survived by her: 2 Daughters: Diana McCormick of Charleston, WV; Debby Hicks of So. Charleston, W V; 3 Sisters: Edith Skiff of Pueblo, CO; Frances Hanson of Spring Hill, FL; Betty Reynolds of Victoria, TX; 2 Grand daughters; 2 Grandsons.

Memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Family suggests donations be made to the American Heart Association. Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.

She was retired from the Lincoln County Board of Education were she had been a secretary at Duval High School and McCorkle Elementary School. She was also a member of the Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church at Garretts Bend, a active member of the Lincoln County Republican Committee and a lifelong resident of Lincoln County.

Woodrow W. “Woody” Stewart, 83, of So. Charleston died Saturday, May 20, 2000 in Thomas Memorial Hospital, So. Charleston, after a short illness.

He was a retired mine foreman for Southern Appalachian Coal Co, a member of the UMWA, a member of the Mountain Heights Church in So. Charleston, a Army veteran of W WII, was a member of the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 and a lifelong resident of Kanawha County.
