Goldie Smith, 72, of Alkol, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Valley Health Village, South Charleston after a short illness.

Goldie was born March 27, 1931 the daughter of the late Charlie and Dollie Smith.

She was a member of the Sycamore Grove Baptist Church.

A special thanks to her phone buddies, you know who you are. She loved you very much.

She is survived by her: Sister: Betty Pauley of Alkol; Brothers: Roe Smith of Sod; Charles T. Smith of Nitro; Harry Smith of OH; Howard Smith of OH; Her special grandchildren: Ashlie Pinson, Charlie Pauley, Mathew Pauley, Chantel and Kayle Pauley, Dylan and Lauren Pauley; Her special boys, Mike, Davy, Chuck, and John Pauley.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating. Burial held in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Friday, December 26, 2003 from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Garnet Dunlap Cecil

Garnet Dunlap Cecil, 90, of Hamlin, formerly of McCorkle, died Friday, December 19, 2003 at Hamlin Continous Care after a long illness.

She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Viola Moore Dunlap and was preceded in death by her daughter, Lois Priestley, a son, Paul Shuff, five sisters and one brother. She was a member of the Sumerco Church of God, a life long resident of Lincoln County and a cook at McCorkle Grade School.

She is survived by: Sister: Eloise Adkins of Yawkey; Brother: Clace Dunlap of TN; Four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be 12:00 Monday, December 22, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Butch Loftis and Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Avis E. Ingram

Avis E. Ingram, 86, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, December 19, 2003 at home after long battle with Alzheimer’s.

She was a member of the Randolph Street Baptist Church, Charleston, and was a retired registered nurse from Kanawha Valley Hospital Charleston. She was a graduate of Webster Springs High School and Charleston General School of Nursing. She also was preceded in death by her husband Royal V. Ingram.

She is survived by her: Daughters: Yvonne Hill of Alum Creek; Virginia Rush of Plantation Key, FL; Sister: Anna Dodrill of Monterville; Five Grandchildren: Lisa Rush, Kelly Robinson, Johnna Hill, Brad Hill, and Danny Hill; Two Great Grandchildren: Alexis Robinson and Braylea Hill.

Services will be 3:30 PM Monday, December 22, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Keith Bailey officiating. Entombment will be at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers make donations to The Gideons International, PO Box 731, St. Albans, WV 25177.

Gerald Keith Watts

Gerald Keith Watts, 83, of Sumerco, Lincoln County, died Saturday, December 13, 2003 at CAMC Memorial following a sudden illness.

He was born November 22, 1920, at Sod, a son of the late Amos Shelburne Watts and Anice Hill Watts. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet Watts, who died as an infant, and Mavis Watts Gold; and by one brother, Chester Grey Watts.

Mr. Watts was a World War II veteran, a graduate of West Virginia State College and West Virginia University, worked 16 years for Union Carbide, and taught English and Spanish for 16 years at Duval High School. During his career at Duval, he took several student groups to Mexico and a couple to Spain. He was a preacher for over 50 years, preaching for several congregations, conducting numerous meetings, and performing dozens of weddings and funerals. He was a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ, where he served as an elder. He was active in mission work, especially in Central America, making a dozen or more trips to that region. He loved to grow a garden and be outdoors.

Mr. Watts is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Sylvia McCormick Watts; two sons and daughters-in-law, Louis K. and Teresa Watts and Gary and Donna Watts of Sumerco; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Dan Dooley of Sumerco; one sister, Marybelle McCormick of Sumerco; grandchildren, Danny and wife, Ligeia Dooley; Luke Dooley; Megan, Joseph and Sarah Watts; Nakomo and David Watts; one step-grandchild, William Watts; and a host of friends.

Services will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Alum Creek Church of Christ with Minister Richard Runyan and Minister Justin heel officiating. Burial will be held in the Watts Family Cemetery, Sumerco. Friends may call on Monday, December 15, 2003 from 7 to 9 PM at the Alum Creek Church of Christ. Helen V. Elkins

Helen V. Elkins, 88, of Alkol passed away at the Boone Health Care Center, Danville, following an extended illness.

Helen was born March 17, 1915 at Fraziers Bottom. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Elkins and her parents, Albert and Mary Gillispie. She was a member of the Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Alkol. She was director of the Ladies Missionary Society, ladies Sunday school teacher and the pianist for several years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Chapter 121 Madison, where she was a Past Worthy Matron. She is survived by her three brothers, Alva Gillispie of Elizabethtown, KY; Eugene Gillispie of Milton, WV; and Cleatis Gillispie of Pliney, WV; three sisters, Pauline Grant ofFraziers Bottom, WV; Wanda Lively of Taylor, MI and Emma Jane Miller of Alkol, WV; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday, December 15, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Rev. Bill Pistore officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

Glenna E. Brumfield

Glenna E. Brumfield, 100, of Griffithsville, died Friday, December 12, 2003 at the home of her caregiver, Sylvia Adkins of Hamlin after a long illness.

She was a 1948 graduate of Moms Harvey College, a retired teacher and principal in Lincoln County for many years, and a member of Eden Baptist Church.

She is survived by: 2 Sisters: Audrey Pardue of Clara, MI; Pearl Egnor of Clearwater Beach, FL; Several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, December 14, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Rexal Cooper and Pastor Hallie Wade officiating. Burial will be in May Cemetery, Griffithsville. Friends may call Saturday from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Edith Eskew

Edith Eskew, 89, of Roane County, formerly of Alum Creek, died Friday, December 5, 2003 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a short illness.

Edith was born August 18, 1914 and was ready to meet Jesus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle.

She was retired from Charleston Linen Service.

Edith is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Linda Bailey of Walton; sons, Burlin Eskew of South Charleston, Ervin Eskew of South Charleston; brother, Robert Cantley of Spring Hill; sister, Mabel Wilson of Florida; nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Monday, December 8, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Pack, South Charleston. Friends may call on Sunday, December 7, 2003 from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home.

Matilda Jane Stuphin

Matilda Jane Sutphin, 98, of Griffithsville, departed this life for her heavenly home on December 4, 2003. She was born September 18, 1905.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Sutphin, Sr., one son, Kenneth, one daughter, Frances and five grandchildren.

She was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ira and Brenda Sutphin of Yawkey, Lenora Sutphin of Chazles City, VA, Melvin of Griffithsville, Larry and Ann Sutphin of Tornado, and Gordon and Lawanna Sutphin of Montgomery; one daughter, Margaret Patton Payne of South Charleston; 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and caregiver, Janet Lovejoy.

Service will be Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell and Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Saturday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
