Velma Ruth Hancock, 87 of Charleston, born, December 28, 1923 went home to be with the Lord Monday, May 9, 2011.  She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Hancock; parents, Frank and Mattie Miller; brother, Harold Eugene Miller; grandson, Douglas Walls.  She was retired from the Blossom Dairy; attended Mount Tabor Church of God and Woodland Gospel Tabernacle.

She is survived by her sons: Dorris (Violet) Walls of Alum Creek; and Hobie (Jenny) Walls of Charleston; Daughter: Sue (Kermit) Fore of Clendenin; Granddaughters: Benita Godbey and Susie Sanders; Grandsons: Lee (Lori) Walls, Greg (Billie) Walls and John Walls;  Great Granddaughters: Katelyn Godbey; Calli, Kenlie, Mariah, and Kayla Walls, and Jessica Saunders; and Great-Grandsons: Jason and Joshua Walls, and Joshua Ryan; and Sister-in-law: Gail Miller of Maitland, FL

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Bob Fields officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

 

Virginia Lee Peters

Virginia Lee Peters, 88, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 6, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House surrounded by her children.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; daughter, Patricia; parents, Leslie and Ethel Chandler Morris; sisters, Julia Oxley and Margie Lilly; brother, James Morris; grandson, Steven Fouts and son-in-law, John Fouts.  She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.

She is survived by Three daughters: Linda Radochio and husband, John of St. Albans,  Betty Edge Yoder and husband, Don of Abbeville, Alabama,  and Sharon Fouts of South Charleston; Four sons: Richard of Lewisburg, Rodney (Reba) of Vidalia, GA, Randall of Alum Creek, and Russell (Linda Gulliam) of Dunbar; 17 Grandchildren; 10 Great grandchildren; 2 Great great grandsons and 2 Step-great grandchildren.

The service will be 8:00 PM Monday, May, 9, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Dave Jones officiating. Friends may call 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Graveside service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.

Edith Vickers Kingrey

Edith Vickers Kingrey, 90, of Alum Creek, formerly of Yawkey went home to be with the Lord Friday, May 6, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House.  She was born in Yawkey on March 30, 1921, the daughter of the late Ross and Flossie Vickers. Edith was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church at Yawkey, where she served as church clerk, treasurer, Sunday school teacher, V.B.S. and Christmas play director for years.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Dell Kingrey; sisters, Juanita Moore and Iva Jean Linville.

Surviving sons: James Michael (Sue) and Philip Dell (Dreama) all of Alum Creek; 3 Grandchildren: Scottie, Todd and Kristin Kingrey; and 2 Great Grandchildren: Jamie and Elizabeth Kingrey.

The service will be 11:00 am Monday, May 9, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the May’s Cemetery at Yawkey. Blaine Wilkerson

Blaine Wilkerson, 74, of Griffithsville passed away Friday, May 6, 2011 with his family and friends by his side.

He was a graduate of Duval High School, Morris Harvey College and received his Masters Degree from Marshall University. He served in the Air National Guard, was a member of the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge AF&AM No. 71, served as varsity football and basketball coach at Duval High School and also coached football and basketball at Guyan Valley High School. His coaching and teaching career in Lincoln County lasted more than 50 years. He had the privilege of coaching several playoff teams while at Duval, including the 1990 State Football Championship Team, and was the head coach for the South in the 1991 North-South All Star football game.

Anyone who knew Blaine saw that one of his greatest passions and enjoyments in life was coaching and mentoring the youth in Lincoln County.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Debbie; parents, Clarence “Dutch” and Iva Wilkerson and two sisters, Imogene Garrett and Joy Mack.  He is survived by son, John.  Special joy of his life is his grandson, Rayce; 3 Sisters: Louise (Bill) Smith of Griffithsville, Sue Midkiff of Griffithsville, Arah Dell (Al) Bias of Texas, and Nephews: Chris Midkiff, Greg and Dana Smith.

A service to celebrate Blaine’s life will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Dave Callison and Butch Leadman officiating. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery, Sweetland. Friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at Duval Middle School, Griffithsville.

Marie Van Gundy

Marie Van Gundy, 87, of McCorkle went home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 5, 2011 after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Willard and Omazell Dunlap; husband, Alfred Van Gundy; daughter, Beverly; one brother and one sister.

She is survived by her son: Gary (Sharon) Dunlap; 2 Sisters: Neva (Richard) Stump and Nell Jean Allen; Brother: Donald (Betty) Dunlap; Grandson: Tim (Gail) Thaxton and Great granddaughter: Kately.

The service will be 3:00 PM Monday, May 9, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle. Letha Marie Blankenship, 85, of St. Albans passed away at Carolinas Medical Center in Monroe, North Carolina May 5, 2011. She had resided in St. Albans, but was staying with her son Larry in Matthews, North Carolina due to her year long illness.  Letha was born March 19, 1926. Her only two siblings Peggy Pridemore and Lucy Stewart reside in Charleston and South Charleston.   Letha was married to Carl in South Charleston September 14, 1946, was a nurse for 28 years and enjoyed working in her flower shop part time.

Surviving is Larry her son and she was preceded in death by her husband Carl and sons David and Phillip. She had six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 12:00 Noon Wednesday May 11, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park South Charleston. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ann Hall, 81, of Yawkey went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at the Hubbard Hospice House following a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel, her parents Stephen and Vonnie Nunn; her brothers, Kyle, Jim, Norris, Lue, Denver and Howard; and her sister, Louise.  She was a Christian and a long time member of Beech Grove Baptist Church. She was retired from Stowers & Son General Merchandising.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Denver Hall and Suzann of Yawkey, and Ken Hall and Shirley of Alum Creek; two brothers and their wives, Ralph Nunn and Carol of St. Albans, and Ernest Nunn and Hilda of Buffalo, one sister and her husband, Jenny Adkins and Jack of Kanawha City; two grandchildren, Mindy Christian and husband, Rex, and Jenna Jeffrey and husband Nich; and four great grandchildren, Melinda Lane, Ben Christian, Crystal Allen, and Logan Jeffrey.

The service will be 3:00pm Saturday, May 7th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating. Burial will be in Hazlett Cemetery, Garrettsbend.  Friends may call from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on Saturday, May 7th at the funeral home.

Hassel Charles Price

Hassel Charles Price, 71, of Alkol went to be with his Lord, Monday May 2, 2011 at home surrounded by family after a long illness.  He retired from Krogers at Ashton Place, was a Christian, a member of the UMWA and served in the US army.  He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon, children Ann (David) Blaylock of Alkol, John (Laura) Price of Logan and Charles (Linda) Price of Independence, Kentucky; siblings, Curtis (Gearldene) Price, Marie “Lit” Vickers, Ann “Sweet” (Herman) Byrd, Gene (Betty) Price, and Arleene (Ervin) Barrickman; grandchildren, Allie, Noah, Garrett and Gavin.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Thursday May 5, at the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church at Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman and Rev. Mike Kordusky officiating. Burial will follow in Saunders Family Cemetery at Hamlin.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family would like to thank the staff at CAMC Memorial for there wonderful care and attention given to Hassel.  In lieu of flowers the family suggest donation be made to Hospice Care 1606 Kanawha Blvd., Charleston, WV 25312-2536

Pauline Jane Rymer

Pauline Jane Rymer, 77, of Alum Creek passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, from lung cancer. She was a faithful and loyal member of the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church since 1972, where she served as youth director, Sunday school teacher, and secretary.

She retired from the Lincoln County Board of Education in 1993. She began teaching in a one-room school in 1957, and taught every grade during her 36-year teaching career before retiring as the principal of Midway Elementary School. She was voted as Citizen of the Century by the Alum Creek Centennial Committee in 2010.  She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 58 years, William Ray Rymer, infant son James, and daughter, Tiffany Sloan, formerly known as Bill Rymer.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna (Eric) Saul and Cindie Beach and partner, John Flowers; grandson, Josh Saul and partner Jennifer Hughes, Jake (Jennifer) Saul, Zachary, Austin and Jesse Beach; brothers, Bill (Emily) Cornette, Jesse (Nell) Cornette, Arthur Cornette, Fred Jowett, Jr.; sisters Lucille Ross, Lorine Gore, and Shirley Woods; brother-in-law, Jimmy (Anna Gae) Rymer,; sister-in-law, Betty McComas, and many nieces, nephews and family members.

Visitation with the family will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 pm Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, 4002 Childress Road, Alum Creek. Service will follow at 2:00 pm with Pastor Keith George officiating. The eulogy will be delivered by former student, Lisa Graley with other former students and teachers participating: Robert Moore, Brenda Pistore, Dreama Pauley, and Dinah McCallister. Interment will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to dear friend and neighbor, Marietta Lovejoy; loving niece, Nancy (Larry) Pauley, loving sister-in-law, Anna Gae Rymer, brother-in-law, Jimmy Rymer, HospiceCare of Charleston, and her many caring and compassionate neighbors, friends, and church family.

Pauline will be remembered for her loving spirit; her kind, compassionate, and accepting nature; her laughter and warm, welcoming smile.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Larry Joe Weddington

Larry Joe Weddington, 58, of Alum Creek died Tuesday, April 26, 2011,  from injuries sustained in single car auto accident at Yawkey.  He was a member of Pipefitters Local #625, former bass singer for the gospel group Genesis.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory Weddington and Nora Saul; brother, David “Bear” Weddington.

He is survived by: Son: Rusty (Missy) Weddington of Yawkey; Daughter: Merri (Matt) Pauley of South Charleston; Sister: Gail (Bill) Stamper of Sod; Step-sister: Nancy (Larry) Pauley of Sod; Step-brother: David (Diana) Saul of South Charleston; Sister-in-law: Norma Weddington of Alkol; and 5 Grandchildren: Emilee, Ashley, Caleb, Kassandra & Mattie

Funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, April 29, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor John Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
