Edith Eskew, 89, of Roane County, formerly of Alum Creek, died Friday, December 5, 2003 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a short illness.

Edith was born August 18, 1914 and was ready to meet Jesus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle.

She was retired from Charleston Linen Service.

Edith is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Linda Bailey of Walton; sons, Burlin Eskew of South Charleston, Ervin Eskew of South Charleston; brother, Robert Cantley of Spring Hill; sister, Mabel Wilson of Florida; nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Monday, December 8, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Pack, South Charleston. Friends may call on Sunday, December 7, 2003 from 5 to 7 PM at the funeral home.

Matilda Jane Stuphin

Matilda Jane Sutphin, 98, of Griffithsville, departed this life for her heavenly home on December 4, 2003. She was born September 18, 1905.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Sutphin, Sr., one son, Kenneth, one daughter, Frances and five grandchildren.

She was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church and a homemaker.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ira and Brenda Sutphin of Yawkey, Lenora Sutphin of Chazles City, VA, Melvin of Griffithsville, Larry and Ann Sutphin of Tornado, and Gordon and Lawanna Sutphin of Montgomery; one daughter, Margaret Patton Payne of South Charleston; 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and caregiver, Janet Lovejoy.

Service will be Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell and Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Saturday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
The Lord is my Shepherd, in Him will I trust.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Creech.

She was attended Ripley First Church of God.

Elnora Akers Lipscomb 93, of Alum Creek, formerly of Sophia, past away Friday, November 28, 2003 at Heartland of Charleston after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Carlos Eugene and G. V. Lipscomb, seven sisters and one brother.

She was a member of Seventh Day Advent Church of Beckley.

She is survived by: 1 Daughter and son-in-law: Evelyn and Ennis Waddoups of Beatty, OR; 2 Sons and daughter-in-law: Hewitt and Carolyn Lipscomb of Arabi, GA; Clazence Lipscomb of Trail, OR; 1 Brother: Adair Akers of South Charleston, WV; 2 Sisters: Alberta Haga and brother-in-law, Barney of Sophia, W V; Eva Gragg of Scott Depot, WV; 9 Grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Laudric and two sisters, Mabel and Grace.

Gladys was a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her: Daughter: Sharon Madden; Sons: Mark Holstein; John Paul Holstein; 2 Grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; Special friends, Elaine Watts and Lisa Graley.

He was a coal miner and an Army veteran of W WII.

He is survived by his: Daughter: Gail Stamper of Jacksonville, FL; Son: Larry of South Charleston; Sister: Bessie Clay of Julian; 12 Grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren; 3 Step-great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Sunday, November 23, 2003 at 3:00 PM with Pastor Robert Leadman officiating. Burial with military graveside rites given by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Sunday from 1 to 3 PM at the funeral home.

Dorothy R. Bell

Dorothy R. Bell, 81, of Sproul, a precious wife, mother, “Granny” and friend, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at home.

Dorothy was born on Friday, October 13, 1922 at Nellis, in Boone County, West Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Burton Chandler, mother, Grace Pearl Green Chandler, sister, Dolly Karnilla, brother, Gilbert William “Bill” Chandler, sons, Tommie Earl Bell, Conrad Wayne Bell, Ronnie Sanford Bell, John Marshall Bell, daughter, Caroline Sue Lilly, grandson, William “Billy” Angelo Bell, granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Hannan and great-grandson, Noah Meadows.

Granny Dot is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Sanford Angelo “Satchet” Bell; son, James Michael and special daughter in law, Darlene Kay Bell of Sproul; daughter, Belva Jane and son in law, David Lee Brogan of Alum Creek; daughter, Gloria Elaine and son in law, Garland Wilson Hannan of South Charleston; son in law, Franklin Gay Lilly of Alum Creek and daughter in laws, Carolyn Jane Bell of Buffalo; Jean Bell of Charleston; 21 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren; Brother, James Calvin Chandler of Chicago, IL. and sister Iris Jean Brady of St. Albans. Also many loving nieces and nephews.

Granny Dot was an active member of Hopewell Baptist Church. She retired from Kanawha County Schools with 31 years of service as a cook. She devoted many countless hours to school fund raisers, helping her neighbors, and those in need. Granny Dot loved her family and especially spending Christmas Eve with those she loved.

To her family she meant the world and her incredible spirit will be greatly missed, John 14: 1-3 “Let not your heart be troubled; Ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my fathers house aze many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you, I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye maybe also, “Till we meet again in eternity – We love you!

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Hopewell Baptist Church, Alum Creek with Rev. Lloyd Humphreys officiating. Burial will be at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Friday at the Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek and one hour prior to service at the church.

Roy Norris “Mac” McCoy

Roy Norris “Mac” McCoy, 77, of St. Albans, died Monday, November 17, 2003 at CAMC Memorial Division after a long illness.

He was a retired Iron Worker from Union Boiler of Nitro and was a member of the Iron Workers Local 301.

He was preceded in death by his pazents Ernest and Ethel McCoy, and his brother, Forrest McCoy.

He is survived by: Wife: Betty (Pauley) McCoy; Son: Raymond N. of St. Albans; 3 Daughters: Barbara McCoy and Jennifer Albert both of St. Albans; Janie Blackshire of Mooresville, NC; 2 Brothers: Morris McCoy of Columbus, OH; Maxwell McCoy of Sod; 3 Sisters: Rachael Wingrove of Parkersburg; Maycel Young of Cross Lanes; Hazel Dent of Ruthdale; 3 Grandsons, 1 Granddaughter, 2 great grandsons, 2 great granddaughters.

Service will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Minister Michael Mayo officiating. Burial will be in Hazlett Cemetery, Garretts Bend. Friends may call from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service.

Deborah G. “Elkins” Frazier, 50, of Hernshaw, went home to be with the Lord Friday, November 7, 2003 at the home of her mother, Dorothy Elkins of Hemshaw after a battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emil Elkins and sister, Patty Sue Elkins.

She was an assistant manager of the Marmet Go-Mart, a graduate of East Bank High School and was of Baptist faith.
Debbie is also survived by her Sister: Anita Kirk of Sissonville; 2 Nieces: Deanna Boothe of Pinch; Erin Williams of Sissonville; 1 Great-Niece: Brooke Boothe; 1 Great-Nephew: Paul Richard Williams;

Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, November 10, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Rev. Dan Williams officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Madison.
