Brookie A. Terlikowski, 42, of Yawkey.

Brooke was stubbornly alive. More alive than most. She was always laughing the loudest, telling stories and sharing some (very) honest opinions, During her long-fought battle with cancer, she was more stubborn and more alive than ever. Over and over, she was told, “There’s no way,” and over and over, she responded, “There is. I’ll show you.”

Even now, after passing at her home on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, she is still living. She is in the feet and hips of her granddaughter, who learned to dance like Naunie. She is in the heart of her husband, tending to the flowers she grew there. She lives in the soft resilience of her daughters, the hard-working hands and humor of her son.

Brooke dealt in a specific, rare version of love. To be loved by her meant to learn to love others better. Whether it was at Sumerco Church of God, where she lent her strength and prayed for others, or at the Alum Creek Pharmacy, where she spent countless hours being a mother and a friend to all of Lincoln County, Brooke always spread love. Feel the ground, breathe the air, remember her smile. The love that is Brooke is there, clinging, stubbornly.

She was predeceased by her father, Dwayne “Pete” Adkins, and sisters, Stephanie and Nikki Adkins.

Brooke is survived by her husband, Scott Terlikowski; three children, Levi, Lindsay and Carly Terlikowski; daughter-in-law, Shelby Terlikowski; and her feisty granddaughter, Avery Jade. Her same, strong spirit runs through her parents, Johnny and Diane McNeely and sisters, Crystal Lovejoy and Misty Price. She is also survived by siblings, Dwayne (Chunk) Adkins, Brian Adkins, Timmy Adkins, Sherri Richmond and Carri Wood; and touched many other family members and friends, all of whom cannot wait to see her again and will be watching for cardinals until then.

Service will be 5:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Following the service a fellowship meal will be held at the Sumerco Church of God.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Emma Jean McCallister of Sod passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

She is survived by her husband, David Grant McCallister; children, Robert (Yvonne) McCallister, Kimberly (Richard) Kollmeyer and Gary G. (Rosemary) McCallister; sister, Vallie Cobb; brother, John Long; grandchildren, Timothy, Bradley, Shane, Anthony, Adam, Shonna and Madison; and great grandchildren, Madison, Ashton, Avery, Serienty Rose, Lexy and Laylee.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 2017 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco, with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating.

Garney Linville Kinder, 90, of Ashford, was born on October 7, 1927 and went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 1, 2018.

He was born and raised in Ashford, West Virginia and was a loved member of the community where he worked and lived.

Garney retired after 17 years of service from Madison Mines in Ashford. He was also an evangelist and traveled throughout the state to deliver God’s Word.

He enjoyed activities like archery and was a talented woodworker, blacksmith and gardener. Ultimately, he loved people and his joy came from helping others. Garney never knew a stranger and showed kindness to all those he met.

Garney was preceded in death by his parents, Elisha W. and Samantha Kinder; sisters, Orpha Stringer, Effie Graley and Virginia Walker; brother, Clifford Kinder; two infant siblings; son-in-law, Danny Kirk; and grandson, Derek Kirk.

Garney leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Pauline; children, Lois Kirk of Ashford, West Virginia, Susan (Jim) McCauley of Stevensville, Montana, Randell (Debi) Kinder of Ashford, West Virginia, Lee (Bonnie) Kinder of Mocksville, North Carolina and Sheila Kinder of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, six grandchildren, Darren Kirk, Chris McCauley, Matthew McCauley, Josaiah Kinder, Bethany Kinder and Tessa Kinder; and four great grandchildren, Nathan, Madison and Alexis McCauley and Gracelyn Kinder; and a host of friends.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 5, at the Ashford Church of God Holiness, 231 Ashford Nellis Road, Ashford, West Virginia with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial will follow at the Kinder Cemetery, Costa. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Arnold Edward Cantley, 78, of Alum Creek, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 31, 2017, after a short battle with leukemia.    Arnold was born on May 5, 1939, to Archie & Lois Flowers Cantley of Alum Creek, WV.

Arnold was also preceded in death by the love of his life for 55 years, Evia Hughes Cantley, brothers, Jerry, Bob, and Jimmy Cantley, sisters, Ellen Pauley and Linda Cantley, and faithful companion, Shaggy.

After being Evia’s caregiver for 12 years, Arnold went back to work with Autozone at the age of 76, where he enjoyed and made many good friends.

He is survived by his daughter Daphne Cantley, grandson, Randall (Hannah) Fields, great-grandchildren, Tommy, Christopher, Chase, and Luke, brother, Patrick (Lee) Cantley of Alabama, sisters, Rosalie (Steve) Lipscomb of Elkview, Shirley Ker of Utah, Mary Herr of Florida, and many nieces and nephews.

Arnold’s final resting place will be at Brounland Cemetery, Alum Creek, 1:00pm Wednesday, January 3, 2018, with a small graveside service provided by Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.  The family would like to give special thanks to all the hospice staff that gave Arnold excellent care, as well as Dr. John and the nursing staff of the Cancer Center at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Jeanette Billingsley, 73, of South Charleston died Saturday, December 30, 2017 at CAMC General STICU in Charleston, WV.

She was a 1961 graduate from Stonewall Jackson High School; and a 1965 graduate of West Virginia University with a B.S. in Microbiology and in 1967 with a M.S. in Microbiology.

After graduation Jeanette taught Microbiology at Bethany College for 2 years before joining the West Virginia DHHR in the Training and Certification Section of the State Hygenic Laboratory before retiring in 1999 with 29 years service. While at Bethany College she taught Microbiology to the inmates at the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, W. Va.

Jeanette was a long time member of Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charleston, serving as an elder and as the Clerk of Session.

She was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Waneda (Rabel) Snodgrass; grandparents, Henry and Gladys Rabel; and infant brother, Earl.

Jeanette is survived by her husband of 35 years, Earl Billingsley, son, Rick Billingsley (Laura Howie) and grandchildren, Bryn and Jackson.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Christina Tutterow officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Carl McClure, 77, of Lansing, Michigan, formerly of Murray, Kentucky went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, December 25, 2017 with his family by his side.

He was a 1958 graduate of Duval High School. Carl was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Buchanan, TN and a retired operator for Dana Corp. in Lansing, MI.

Carl was predeceased by his wife, Wava McClure; parents, Frank Leslie and Zadie Breedlove McClure; brothers, Roger “Swammie”, Frank “Gus”, Victor, M. G. and Rex McClure; and sisters, Lois LaRue and Sarah Carthrae.

He is survived by his daughter Rhonda (Tom) Price, of Hastings, MI, grandson Adam (Chelsey) Jones, great-grandson Colt Jones, grandson Aaron Clark, great-grandson Tanner McClure-Clark, son Kevin McClure, of Charlotte, MI and granddaughter Ellen Salmons.

Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 29, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Marcie Skiles, 60, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Christmas Day, December 25, 2017.

She was predeceased by her parents, Shorty and Mary Ennis; and brother, Michael.

Marcie was a loving mother, grandmother and sister and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Amber (John) Sloan; sister, Sherry (David Clarke) Jones; grandchildren, Christina, Cody and Devin; and nephew, Timmy (Allie).

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Emma Louise Thornhill Snodgrass, 92, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord Christmas Day, December 25, 2017 at Hubbard Hospice West in South Charleston, WV.

She was a former member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Louise was preceded in death by her husbands Lee Thornhill and Fred Snodgrass; parents, Murl and Ethel Gillispie; and daughter, Darleen Hickey.

She is survived by her children, Oren (Sandra) Thornhill and Joyce Luella (John) Moore; grandchildren, Christopher Thornhill, Stephen Lee Milton, William Lee Robinson and Elizabeth Bradshaw; great grandchildren, Reese and Ashton Thornhill; and loving nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 28, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Gillispie-Hudson Cemetery in Alum Creek.

Claude Thomas Young, Sr., 85, of South Charleston, went home Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at Thomas Memorial  Hospital.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed & Dorothy Young, brother, John Young and sister, Linda Hill.

He was the area service man for AEP with 37 years service where he was well known as “the power company man”.  He served in the US Army during the Korean War, coached little league baseball in Ruthdale, loved WVU football, hunting at the cabin, and most of all spending time with family.  He was a member of South Charleston Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patty Jo, sons, Tom (Denise Beard) Young, Jr., Mark (Renee) Young and David (Tricia) Young; grandchildren, Justin (Jessica) Young, Ashton (Drew) Holbrook, Ryan, Brett, David, Grant and Sean Young; and great-grandchildren, Keith Rose, Savannah and Connor Young He is also survived by his brothers, Jim Young, R.E. “Gene” Young, M.D., and Jack Young; sisters, Jane Bowling and Mary Bobbitt, and sister-in-law, Patty Ann Young.

In the words of his favorite granddaughter, Ashton: There has never been a better man to walk this earth.  He was the kindest, gentlest, strongest man I’ve ever known.  He was my very biggest fan, and I his.  He loved his family and worshipped the ground my grandmother walked on until the very end.  He taught us life lessons and taught us to play games.  He didn’t believe in taking his shoes off in the house.  He did believe in singing, cigars, giving compliments, deer hunting, and dippin’ eggs.  I’ll always cherish the time spent sitting together on the porch swing and ‘helping’ him work in his shed.  Nothing was better than piling in the trailer connected to the tractor with Brett and Ryan and riding to the gas station to get slushees and candy.  It’s hard to imagine I won’t hug him again or hear him say, “There’s my girl!” every time I visit.  I’ll miss him more than words can possibly say.  We love you, Papaw.  “He loved us not because we were lovable, but because he is love.”

Mary Elizabeth Pauley, 90, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 17, 2017, after a long illness.  Mary retired from Textile Mills, Spring Hill, and was a member of Alum Creek Church of Christ.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Aquilla and Gladys Belcher, husband, Paul E. Pauley and daughter, Joyce Kirk, and son Barry Edward. 

She is survived by her sons, Larry (Nancy) Pauley of Sod, and David (Vicki) Pauley of South Charleston; grandchildren, Craig (Jennifer) Pauley of Sandy Ridge, NC, Bruce (Karrah) Pauley, Lesli (Matthew) Smith, and Betsy (Jason) Walker all of South Charleston; great-grandchildren, Chasity (Dr. Donald) Brescia of Clemmons, NC, Ryan Smith, Tristan Walker, Riley Pauley and Isabella Pauley all of South Charleston and great great-grandchildren, Brynn and Riese Brescia, step great-grandchildren, Justin and Jade Britt, and son-in-law, David Kirk of Alum Creek. 

She is also survived by her sisters, Helen (Eugene) Williams, June Markgraff, Wanda (George) Kennedy, brothers, Edward Belcher, Richard (Jewell) Belcher, sisters-in-law, Elsie Pauley and Shirley Pauley, along with several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Cheryl Belcher. 

Service will be 2:00pm Thursday, December 21, 2017, with visitation one hour prior to the service at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman and Pastor Daniel Dent officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Pallbearers will be family and friends.
