Ann Linville

Ann Conway Linville, 84, of Dunbar, WV, passed away on June 2, 2020 surrounded by her family.

Ann was born in Ashland, KY on May 17, 1936. She was married to Maxwell Linville on June 21, 1956; they were married just over 46 years.

Ann is preceded in death by husband Maxwell Linville; granddaughter Brittney Christian and many family members.

Ann was a proud volunteer for the American Red Cross for a number of years in the disaster relief program throughout the Continental US and US Territories.  She was a member of Left Fork Baptist Church and the Community Center of Morrisvale.

Ann is survived by her brother Ron Conway; sister Eloise Conway; children Cheryl Cummings (Matthew), Joseph Linville (Monica), Lauren Linville, Kevin Linville (Ronda); grandchildren Rachel Alles (Douglas), Christopher Linville, Adam Cummings, Bradley Linville, Brian Linville (Morgan), Andrew Graley (Morgan), Joshua Linville, Samuel Foster; great-grandchildren Marcus Linville, Maya Cummings, Madeline Alles, Lahasia Good, Maxwell Alles, Miles Linville, Max Linville; great-great-grandson Karson Linville and other family and friends.

A graveside service with viewing will be held 12:00 PM Friday, June 5, 2020 at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey with Pastor Darrell Searls of Yawkey Baptist Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the American Red Cross.

Pearl E. Rose

Pearl E. Rose, 85, of Nitro, WV, went home Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston, WV.

She retired after working as an LPN at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston.

Pearl was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy; son, Wally Rose; daughter, Susie Chapman, sister, Jo Brewer; and parents, Brady and Doris Griffith Marker.

She is survived by her son, David (Angie) Rose; longtime companion, Leon “Mike” Daugherty; brother, Richard (Joan) Marker; grandchildren, Kasey (Dale) Samples; Jamie Rose, and Stephen (Sarah) Chapman; and great grand children, Garret, Lincoln, Sophia, and Scarlett.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 6, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. followed by a private service at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.    In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25387-2536.

Richard Vickers

Richard O’Leary Vickers, 79, of Sumerco, WV, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Valley Center, South Charleston.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Tiny Hale Vickers, brothers, Chester and Edward Vickers, and sisters, Bertha Breedlove and Marquitta Harvey.   

Richard was a 1959 graduate of Duval High School, Griffithsville.  He was a land surveyor for the State of WV and the coal mining industry. 

He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Terry) Dotson, granddaughter, Jennifer (Andy) Whisenant, great-grandson, Grayson Whisenant, sisters, Jean Pauley and Carol Matthews, and several nieces and nephews.  

There will be no services.

Dora Mae Barker

Dora Mae Barker, 92, pf Ashford, WV, went home Saturday, May 30, 2020 at HospiceCare at CAMC Memorial in  Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dempsey; parents, Ocie and Ira Kinder; and sisters, Tressie Stone and Beulah Page.

Mae was a member of the Emmons Freewill Baptist Church.  She was a loving and kind mother to many who also loved her.  We will be forever grateful for those who took care of her during her short illness. 

She is survived by sisters, Ruth May and Nellie Barker; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at the Emmons Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Charles Hardy officiating.  Burial will follow at the Barker Cemetery, Ashford, WV.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Betty Deloris Williams Szczutkowski, age 82, left us in the early morning when softly came the dawn.  She went home to join her Heavenly family on Thursday, May 28, 2020.

Waiting to greet her, was her husband Arthur Joseph Szczutkowski, (Mom) grandmother, Maude Mae Roberts Williams and her father Russell Olin Williams.

Betty met her late husband, Arthur Joseph Sczcutkowski, while attending Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida.  Together they enjoyed 25 years in the Florida sun gardening, fishing, gemology, and rock collecting.  They retired in 1996 and moved to West Virginia to live out their remaining years surrounded by their family. 

Some people only walk on this earth a short time.  All too soon, she had to say goodbye to her beloved granddaughter, Licia Rutherford who had passed away tragically.

Mother, you brought us into this world and it’s hard to imagine a life without you.  You were there when we took our first breath.  You helped us to navigate our life’s path.  You were our champion through life’s trials and victories.  Dearest Mom, you have left us, your smiling face we’ll see no more, but we will struggle on until we meet you on that Celestial Shore.  With love and much affection, your daughter, Marilyn Rutherford Pauley; sons, Bill (Robin) Rutherford, Tracy (Penny) Graley and Toby Graley.  You also leave 5 grandchildren, Tracy Graley Jr., Donald Pauley Jr., Stephanie Graley Barefield, Joe Ballew and Lydia Rutherford; 15 great grandchildren, 2 nieces and many cousins who love you dearly.

A graveside service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2020, at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston, WV, with Pastor Scott Beha officiating.

Harold Wayne Midkiff

Harold Wayne Midkiff, born May 9, 1954 went home to be with the Lord Monday, May 25, 2020 at the age of 66.

Wayne retired from Kincaid Enterprise where he was a chemical operator. He was also a former over the road truck driver and security guard. Wayne loved the outdoors fishing, hunting, and working in his garden.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; daughters, Tiffany (Phillip) Malone, Kimmy (Zachary) Lindeman, and Tara Midkiff; sons, Ronnie William Midkiff, Kevin Lee Midkiff, and Micheal Wayne Midkiff; brother, Ronnie Midkiff; and 5 grandchildren.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2020 at Curry Funeral Home, with Pastor Mike Graley officiating.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Due to social distancing the visitation will be a walk through.

Richard Wayne Johnson

Richard Wayne “Rick” Taxi” Johnson, 61, of South Charleston, WV, went home Sunday May 24, 2020.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Audrey Shultz Johnson; siblings, Betty Hart, Jerry, Reuben, Larry “Pooch”, Beulah Mae, and Ralph Johnson.

He is survived by his companion, Lana Allen Johnson; daughter, Vicki Johnson of Tampa, FL; brothers, Kenneth, Ronald, Carl, Randy, and Gary Johnson; sisters, Lorraine Kinder, Rosa Wells, Dora Harvey and Charlotte Dunlap; grandchildren Jordan, Jonah, and Quinn; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with viewing will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 29, at the Estel Shultz Cemetery in South Charleston. 

Maggie Abbott

Maggie Abbott, 89, of Yawkey, WV, went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 21, 2020 at home.

She was a faithful member of Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church for many years.

Maggie was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Cleo Abbott; daughter, Joyce Miller; parents, Orville and Vallie Breedlove Roberts;step-mom, Lucy Roberts; sisters, Louise Byrd, Belle Hayes and brother, Harley Roberts.

She is survived by sons, Freddie, Stanley (Nona), and Joe; daughter, Kathleen (Roger) McCallister whom she made her home with the past 5 years; siblings, Mable Waits, Buster (Norma) Roberts, Rose (Forrest) Johnston, Harry (Phyllis) Roberts, Julia Roberts, Robert (Nora) Roberts, Rebecca (Walter) Cook, and Arthur (Mary) Roberts; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson.

A walk through visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday, May 26, at Curry Funeral Home from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00p.m. A private service will follow with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating.  Burial will follow at the Stone Family Cemetery, Alkol, WV.

Merle Sparks Seagraves

Merle Sparks Seagraves left this life, eager to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 surrounded by her family at home.

Born August 8, 1936, to Lindsey Sparks and Rosa Crum Sparks in Delbarton, WV, she was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and, possibly one of her favorite titles, “MaMaw”.  She was a special friend to many. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Lindsey & Rosa Crum Sparks, and husband, Julius Seagraves.

Surviving with so many loving memories are her sisters Elizabeth (Jennings) Maynard of Paintsville, KY, and Ozella Varney of Barboursville, WV, children, Betty (Sonny) Gillenwater of Foster, WV, Tom (Lou) Chafin of Alum Creek, WV, Rose (Mark) Hasen of Alkol, WV, and Robert (Deirdre) Seagraves of Savannah, GA. 

She is also survived by her grandchildren, Neil (Summer) Hasen of Alkol, WV, Krystle (Eddie) Gillespie of Alkol, WV, Jessica (Justin) Roach of South Charleston, Lindsay (Grant) White of Elkview, WV, and Courtney Seagraves of Savannah, GA, great-grandchildren, Julianna Hasen, Kaylee Lilly, and Lenora Roach, many special nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews and a host of cherished friends and neighbors. 

Merle graduated from Burch Hill School and retired from Boone County Community Organization.  Her favorite hobby was basket weaving, and she played a mean game of Rook and Boggle.  She was a Christian who showed God’s love to all who were blessed to know her.

Graveside service to honor her life will be held at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, 2:30pm Saturday, May 23, 2020, with Pastor Randell Kinder officiating.  There will be a walk through visitation held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, from 1:00 – 2:00pm. 

Until we meet again, we will miss her instructions to “hurry back” to visit.

Jerry Lee Allen

Jerry Lee Allen, 75 of Sod passed away on Tuesday May 19, 2020 at Hospice House at CAMC after a long illness.

Jerry was a proud 50 year member of Laborer’s Union Local 1353.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dreama Allen; parents, Glen and Nellie Jean Allen; sisters, Christina Allen, Dreama Politino, and Linda Brogan.

Jerry is survived by his daughter, Hope (Eric) Staats of Spencer, companion, Betsy Jarrett; brothers Larry (Kathy) Allen of Yawkey, and Dale Allen of Sod; sister, Lisa (Jerry) Saunders of Hurricane; 3 grandchildren, Katelyn, Jules, and Landon Staats all of Spencer.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday May 22, 2020 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco, with Pastor Bub Anderson officiating.
