Denzil F. Pauley 75, of So. Charleston passed away January 10, 2004 at home after a battle with cancer. He was born January 12, 1928 and was owner and operator of P&P Auto Salvage in So. Charleston and was a Marine and Air Force veteran of WWII and Korean war.

He is survived by his wife: Doris Casdorph Pauley; 3 Sons: Dale, Dennis and Darrell Pauley all of So. Charleston; 2 Daughters: Cathy Mcie of Charleston and Elaine Coon of St. Albans; 1 Brother: Ed Pauley of So. Charleston; 1 Sister: Marie Michelson of St. Albans; 3 half sisters: Debby Barker of Danville; Bazbara Tackett of Madison and Phyllis Baldwin of North Carolina; 8 Grandchildren;

Services will beheld Tuesday January 13, 2004 at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek, with Rev. Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be in the Casdorph Cemetery Sissonville.Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Monday at the funeral home. Sybil Carol Dunning, 57, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord after a long battle with cancer.
She was a homemaker, a member of Mt. Zion Church, Spring Hill and a former employee of Kanawha County Board of Education.

She is survived by: Husband: Ernest Dunning; Daughter and son-in-law: Mischelle and Sam Richardson of Alum Creek; 2 Sisters: Beverly DeBord and Rosemary Eplin of South Charleston; 2 Brothers: John R. McGhee of Charleston; Glenn McGhee of NC; 2 Grandchildren: Brigit Nicole Dunning and Matthew David Richardson.

Service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, January 10, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Bill Frye and Rev. Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM on Friday, January 9, 2004 at the funeral home.

Freda A. Short, 86, of Alum Creek, died December 30, 2003 at Cedar Ridge Center, Sissonville after a short illness.

She is survived by her: Sister: Vivian Holstein of Alum Creek; Niece: Dora Burcham and husband, Phillip S. of Sissonville; Nephew: Glenn Short and wife, Mary Jane of Vero Beach, FL.

Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday January 3, 2004 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Minister Justin Imel officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Margie Elizabeth Thomas

Margie Elizabeth Thomas, 62, of South Charleston, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at home surrounded by family after a long illness.

Margie formerly had worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Tax Department. She last worked as a claims manager at Workers Compensation and was a 44-year resident of South Charleston.

She is survived by her: Husband: Jack G. Thomas; Son and daughter-in-law: Jack “Randall” and Tammy Lynn Thomas of South Charleston; Sisters: Mary Lou Spencer of Elkview; Myrtle Ann Smith of Cross Lanes; Brothers: Marvin Brown of Belle; Jerry Brown of Elkview; Five grandchildren: Jacquelyn, Kirk, C.J., Tyler and Baby Josh;

A memorial service will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at 8:00 PM with Rev. Gene Pauley officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Virginia Ethel Silvey

Virginia Ethel Silvey, 90, of St. Albans, departed this life to go meet our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, December 29, 2003 after an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Paul Silvey.

Mrs. Ethel Silvey was atone time an active member of RSVP, past president of St. Albans Hansford Senior Citizen Center, and an active member of the First Baptist Church, Hurricane, where she taught the Ladies Fidellis Sunday school class for many years. She and her husband, Sam, moved to St. Albans and they became members of the Highlawn Baptist Church where they were active members. She taught the Silvey-Sullivan Sunday school class for many years. The last several years of her life she resided at Valley Health Center, South Charleston, where she was an active member of several bible study groups and made many friends.

She is survived by her children, Barbara Dinan of Columbus, OH; John Silvey of Hurricane; Frankie Barker of Augusta, GA; Step-daughters, Joyce Miles and Rosemary Means of St. Albans; Long time companion and Christian friend, James Sullivan of St. Albans; 14 Grandchildren; Several great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans, with Rev. Joe Hyde, George Kidd and Mike Fernett officiating. Burial will be held in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Friends may call on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 from 6 to 9 PM at the Highlawn Baptist Church, St. Albans.

Monroe S. Songer, 87, of Ashford, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 at CAMC General division after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Billie and son, Pete.

He was retired from the City of South Charleston, a Baptist, and a member of the Coal Valley Mens Quartet and the Gospelaires.

Monroe is survived by his wife, Candida R. Songer; daughter, Stephanie Swanson of South Charleston; sisters, Jean Snyder and Marilyn Moore both of Charleston; Phyllis Thomason of Orlando, FL; six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Walter Means and Rev. Gary Hall officiating. Burial will be held in French Cemetery, Charleston. Friends may call on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Kathy Callahan Dunlap, 44, of Sumerco, died Sunday, December 28, 2003 at home after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jackson and Marcia Callahan, husband, Royce Dunlap, and sister, Beverly Sowards.

She was a Christian, attended McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church and worked for Catholic Community Homemaker Service.

She is survived by her: Daughter: Cassy Dunlap of McCorkle; Son: Shane Howell of McCorkle; Four Step-sons; Four Brothers: James Callahan of Myrtle Beach, SC; John Callahan of Sod; Barry Callahan of McCorkle; Pat Callahan of McCorkle; Good friend Peggy Black and caregiver, Angie Callahan. Two Grandchildren, Jacob Howell and Sarah Callahan. Step-father, Paul Griffith.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Meddie Dunlap officiating. Burial will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle. Friends may call on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 from 7 to 9 PM.

Bishop Charles “Charlie” R. Arnold, 81, of Griffithsville, went home to be with the Lord, on Saturday, December 27, 2003, at the VA Hospital in Huntington after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Walter Arnold.

Charlie was Bishop of Jesus’ Church, retired from American General Insurance sales and was an auctioneer. He was an Army veteran of WWII.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Pauley Arnold; three sons, Anthony at home, Charles of Yawkey; Charles Faye Bailey of California; three daughters, Rebecca Reed, Velma Deason, Brenda Gobble; four brothers, James, Kyle, Oscar, and Earl; five sisters, Clarice Beeman, Mattie Yount, Delphia Smith, Minnie Miller, Jeanette Wood; 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, January 1, 2004 at 2:00 PM with Bishop James Holt officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW post #4768 will be held at Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

She was a homemaker and a member of Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny and granddaughter, Kacey Estep.
