Gary Joseph Searls, Sr., 66, of Alkol, WV died Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Boone Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his dad, Owen “OJ” Searls, and sisters, Sandi Lovejoy and Lana Gillenwater.

He is survived by his two daughters, April (Jesse) Roberts of Griffithsville, and Michelle Searls of Alkol, two sons, Gary Joseph (Gary Joe) Searls, Jr., of Alkol, and Shannon Searls of Alum Creek, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother Katrina Searls of Alkol, three brothers, Bruce (Beverly) Searls of Alkol, Ron Searls of Mud River, and Jay (Robin) Searls of Alkol, sister, Joyce (Dale) Armstrong of Sod, and a host of other family.

He was an underground coal miner for Salah Corp. Mines, Campbells Creek, WV.

A gathering of friends and family will be Monday. April 24, 2023 from 6:00 to 7:00pm at Curry Funeral Home. Burial will be held at a later date at Searls Family Cemetery, Barkcamp Road, Alkol.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions toward funeral expenses.

Lloyd Joe Prine

Lloyd Joe Prine, 91, of Nitro, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at CAMC-Memorial Division, Charleston, WV. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Georgia Cunningham Prine.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Satterfield Prine and son, Jamie.

He retired from Rhone-Poulenc-Carbide with over 40 years as a heavy equipment supervisor and was a member of the Griffithsville Church of Christ.

Service will be 2:00pm Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Ministers Mark Mitchell and Charles McKinney officiating. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

Joe loved his family dearly telling them everyday. He will be greatly missed.

Jackie “Jack” Lee Dunlap, 86, of South Charleston, WV, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. He was surrounded by his wife and children singing Great Hymns of the Faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Amy Pauley Dunlap and was the last of 12 children.

He is survived by his wife, Joann of 63 years, daughter, Michele (Randy) Moore of Philippi, WV, and son, Aaron (Julie) Dunlap, Ripley, WV, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren with one on the way and a host of church family and friends that will greatly miss him.

Jack was a 1954 graduate of Duval High School, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 – 1958, and was in active reserves for four more years. With the G.I. Bill he completed Barber College and established Jack & Joann’s Salon where he operated his shop for 50 years and was a charter member of Davis Creek Lions Club and Volunteer Fire Department.

He was an active member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church where he served as deacon, choir member, Sunday School superintendent and in other capacities. He served as a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason in Lodge #168, South Charleston, and also as a Shriner loving to help with children’s charities.

Jack & Joann loved to travel. His adventurous spirit took him over the Arctic Circle in a mail plane, and together they traveled to Ireland, Scotland, Panama, The Virgin Islands, Hawaii, and more. They loved ballroom dancing and Jack loved to turkey hunt.

Service will be 1:00pm Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek, with Pastor Jodi Pistore and Chuck Kinder officiating. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be 11:00am Monday, May 1, 2023, at Donell C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar, WV, with Military Graveside Rites.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, 2002 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV 25003.

Tammy Lynn Hartwell Petrella, 57, of South Charleston, WV, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at home. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Alyssa.

Tammy worked as a Social Worker for Adult Protective Services.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Michelle) Workman of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter, Amy Workman; grandchildren, Seth, Scarlett, and Cassie. She is also survived by her parents, Roger & Dee Hartwell.

It was Tammy’s wishes to be cremated. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.

Sandra Carol Bernice Rogers, 74, of Garrets Bend went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at CAMC Hospice.

She was a former employee of Union Carbide and attended Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Sod.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Broyles; parents, Charles “Jiggs” and Lula May Cyrus Rogers; sisters, Ida Mae Cyrus Bird, Barbara Cyrus Aliff; brother, Lionel T. Rogers.

She is survived by brother, Daniel (Janice) Rogers of Salisbury, NC; daughter, Sonya (Rob) Springsteen of Poca; granddaughter, Caitlin (Bryan) Priddy of Nitro; and 3 great grandchildren, the loves of her life, “Addie” Tinney, Issan and Lula Gilbert.

In keeping with Sandra’s wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no services.

Special thanks to her caregivers, Meranda, Amanda, Cindy, and Trevor that treated her like loved family.

Barbara Dean “Bobby” Holstine, 77, of Emmons, WV, went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Hubbard Hospice House. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Holstine, parents, Dewy and Mollie Chandler Minner, infant twin sister, Shirley Jean Minner, and sister, Orpha Eskew, brothers, Hansford, Stanley, and Jerry Minner.

Bobby was a homemaker and a member of Briar Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sister, Judith Holstine of Hernshaw, WV; sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Minner of IN & Linda Minner of SC; brother-in-law, William (Marylou) Holstine of Ashford; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside service at Holstein Cemetery, Dartmont, WV, will be 1:00pm, Thursday, April 13, 2023, with Pastor Mike Graley officiating.

Jami Cheyanne Moore

Jami Cheyanne Moore, 33, passed away Monday, April 3, 2023, at Morrisvale, WV. She was preceded in death by her father, Jimmy Moore and sister, Brookie Moore, and grandmother, Mable “Sissy” Thacker.

Jami is survived by her four children, and sisters, Nikkolette Dunlap, of Alum Creek, WV, and Holly Meade, of Mullins, SC, and also by many nieces and nephews.

There will be no service. Private burial will be at a later date at Anderson Cemetery, Sumerco, WV.

Gary Ray “Zeke” Messer, 82, of Julian, WV, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at Hillcrest Health Care Center, Danville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Dee, parents, Ora Messer and Desmond Marie Griffith Huffman, brothers, Ed, Curtis, Gene, Jimbo, and sisters, Betty Lou, Eloise and Virginia.

He was a retired pipeline welder for Saul Construction with over 40 years service and also worked for L&L Welding & Antler Welding.

He is survived by his daughters, Rhonda (Shorty) Sutphin and Sandy Messer (Randy Blethen), stepson, Joe Messer, sister, Joy Eggers, grandson, Charles Sutphin II and was PAPAW to Kendal Maynard.

Service will be 12:00 Noon Saturday, April 8, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Gillispie officiating. Burial will follow at Hill Cemetery, Julian. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Helen Wilson

Helen Wilson, 66, of Hamlin passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at home.

She was a homemaker.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Dime Wilson, Jr.; father, Matej Triska; mother, Anna Jirsova Triska; son, Christopher Wilson; and brother, Peter Triska.

She is survived by daughter, Angela Cornell; sons, Greg Wilson, Dime Wilson, Nick Wilson, & Josh Wilson; brothers, Karl Triska, Matej Triska, & David Triska; sisters, Sonja Shy & Irene Garces; 10 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and family members.

In keeping with Helen’s wishes, she will be cremated and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Jackie Lee Matheny, Sr.

Jackie Lee Matheny, Sr., 81, of Liberty, formerly of Troutman, NC, passed away Monday, April 3, 2023, at Jackson General Hospital after a short illness.

Jack retired from the State of North Carolina after 31 years of service. He was very outgoing and never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn “Ritzie” Holstine Matheny; parents, Lester & Minnie Snodgrass Matheny; sisters, Melba Matheny, Ellen Jean (Neil) Smith; brothers, Charles (Betty) Matheny, Glen Matheny.

Jack is survived by sons, Jackie Lee (Tammy) Matheny, Jr. and Christopher Matheny; stepdaughter, Deanna Boggs of Parkersburg; sister, Joyce (Don) Petry of Kenna; brother, Darrell (Margie) Matheny of Rock Hill, SC; sister-in-law, Susan Matheny; grandchildren, Cassandra Matheny, Josh (Melanie) Matheny; step grandchildren, Tia Boggs, Michael Boggs; 8 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 7, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
