Goldie Mae Walls, 85 of Olcott went home to be with the Lord Monday November 16, 2009 at Valley Health Village So. Charleston after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her son, Floyd “Pookie” Walls and husband Orville F. Walls

She is survived by her sons Roy Walls of Olcott and Teddy Walls of Ruth, brother Richard Lee Holstine of Emmons, 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 PM Thursday at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Mike Graley officiating. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery at Dartmont. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Rev. Robert Wayne Cogar

Rev. Robert Wayne Cogar Sr., 67 of Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at home after a long illness. He was a former pastor of the House of Prayer at Bakers Fork,  was a  member of the Full Gospel Church in Saint Albans and also served in the US Army.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Diana; 2 sons Robert(Tammy) and Tim(Brenda) both of Charleston;1 daughter Tammy(Tony) Keefer of Charleston; 2 brothers Billy and Paul; 2 sisters Cleo Stricker and Lora Henderson and 7 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren who affectionately knew their papaw as ” Superman” because of the strength & determination he showed during his life.

Services will be  8:00 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev.  Billy Burdette officiating. Friends will gather from 6-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

 

Betty Emma Rabel

Betty Emma Rabel, 85 of Sod went home to be with the Lord Friday evening, November 13, 2009 at home after a long illness.  She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church for the past 18 years and a former member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Sod.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents William (Com) and Gertie Keeling; sisters Mae Hudson, Wynoka Crowder, Norine Morton, and Dessie Davisson; brothers Asa, Cecil, Clifford, and Okey Keeling and Eugene McClure

She is survived by her loving husband of 25 years Hubert Rabel; daughter Dorothy (Graley) Waldron and special niece Pam (Keeling) Thompson both of Sod; Step sons Hubert L.(Susan), Richard, Ron(Teresa), Terry, Chuck(Sherri) Rabel; Sisters Mary Wallace, Phyllis Rife, Mayme(Paul) Zirkle all of Sumerco Several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren

Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Rev. Clarence Hutton officiating. Entombment will be in Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum at South Charleston.   Friends will gather Monday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.

Harold Jennings Burns

Harold Jennings Burns, 85 of Yawkey, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston after a long illness.

He served as an area minister and elder for many years including 15 years at the Hamlin Church of Christ, he also was a brick mason, loved music, was a member of the Appalachian Fiddlers Association, had won the state championship senior fiddle player award and served in the Merchant Marines during WW II.

He is survived by his wife, Edna C. Watts Burns, son and daughter-in-law, Donald J. and Delores Burns of Sparta, Tennessee, sister Mary Esther Morris, grandchildren: Burton J. Burns, Jamie L. Cline and husband Matt, and Lori A. Burns. Several nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 14, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Ministers Louie Watts and David Cabell officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey. Friends will gather with the family from 6 to 8 pm Friday at the funeral home.

James Arnold “Jay Byrd” Byrd, 78 of McCorkle formerly of St. Albans went home to the Lord, Friday, November 6, 2009 at CAMC Teays Valley after a long illness.

Arnold was preceded in death by his first wife Mary, parents Hazel and Brady Johnson, brother Buddy Johnson and sisters Brenda and Pat.

He was retired from Union Carbide and Brown and Root a member of Vision of Harvest Baptist Church at McCorkle and a Air Force Veteran of the Korea War.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Jean Bays, daughters, Cindy Trail, Robin Willis both of St. Albans  Patty Au of California daughter and  care giver Rosie Groose of St. Albans, Sandy Pauley of St. Albans and Alisha Groose of Charleston, son Chuck Marcum of St. Albans. Step children, Sherry Hughes and Chuck Bays both of McCorkle and Karen Wade and Jeff Bays both of Griffithsville, brothers, Allen Johnson of Scott Depot and Eddie Johnson of Poca. 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren 9 step grandchildren, 3 step great grandchildren, and a host of friends and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Monday November 9 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with pastors Chuck Smith and Billy Silva officiating. Burial with military rites will be at the Smith Cemetery at Scott Depot. Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 7 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Mary Virginia Alford

Mary Virginia Alford, 81, of Garretts Bend passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Alford; parents, Charlie & Sally Johnson and sister, Janice McCallister.  Mary will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

She is survived by her 4 children and spouses:

Jerry (Cheryl) Alford of Garretts Bend

13 great grandchildren

Service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating.  Burial will be in Sansom Cemetery, Garretts Bend.  Friends and family may gather from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.

The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Ida I. Barnette

Ida I. Barnette, 91, was called home to live with her Lord, October 31, 2009.

She was a resident of South Charleston, WV for 68 years but was currently residing in Mr. Sterling, OH, to be near her son and family.  Ida was a member of the Davis Creek Nazarene Church where she served as a greeter to all who entered the church’s doors.  She retired from The Diamond Department Store with 25 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Barnette and son, Donald Edward Barnette.

She is survived by:

Son: Dale (Eloise) Barnette of Mt. Sterling, OH

Grandson: Rod Barnette of London, OH

Granddaughter: Beverly Dale of Orient, OH

Great Grandson: Travis (Jessica) of Emmalena, KY

Great, Great Grandson:   Cameron Bell of Emmalena, KY

Great  Granddaughter: Ebony Bell of Lexington, KY

Half-Brother: George Lambert

Half-Sister: Phyllis Jean Adkins

Services will be  1:00pm Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Davis Creek Church Of The Nazarene with Rev Frank Goff and Mel Legg officiating.  Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.

Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church. Curry Funeral Home at Alum Creek is in care of arrangements.

Bess A. Bare, 86, of Alum Creek passed away Saturday, October 31, 2009 at CAMC Memorial Division after a long illness.  She was a retired manager from the May Co., Cleveland, OH.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Christine Pauley & Draunta Spenik; brothers, Lyndell, Burton and Cleo Holstein.

Glenna J. Lee

Glenna J. Lee, 81, of St. Albans went home to the Lord, Tuesday October 27, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital Charleston after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leon N. Lee.  She was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church St. Albans where she was active in the choir a member of the Lee-Ruch Sunday School Class and served on many boards and committees.

Glenna is survived by her children, Donna M. Strand of Cross Lanes, Michael W. Lee and his wife Ruth of Birmingham, Alabama and Glenn A. Lee of St. Albans, and grandson Michael T. Lee and his wife Maria of Birmingham, Alabama.

A tribute to Glenna’s life will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 30, 2009 at Highlawn Baptist Church 2304 Jefferson Ave. St. Albans with Pastor, Rev. Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park St. Albans. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the Highlawn Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers the family request donation be made to the Highlawn Baptist Church.
