Linda Sue Dunlap

Linda Sue Dunlap 67, of Alum Creek passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2012 , just in time for morning service in heaven. She died at home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dillard Mark and Blanche Mortana Griffith McCormick, her life-long love Jerry Lee Dunlap and nephew (or third son) Daniel “Meathead” McCormick.

She was a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ and a 1962 graduate of Duval High School. Linda was employed by the Diamond Department Store, Lincoln County Opportunity Council, and Kroger. She retired from Kroger in 1990. She also owned and operated a family restaurant, grocery store, and ceramic shop with her husband, Jerry. Linda and Jerry were best known for their open home to relatives or anyone else who needed a place to rest his or her head. Their Saturday night pizza parties were a community favorite in the Alum Creek area for children and adults. Her artistic talents were often displayed through her paintings and ceramic creations. Even though the last fourteen years of her life were filled with loss and illness, her grandchildren were always her inspiration. This was evident when she turned her home into “Granny’s Playhouse” filled with boats, pool tables, construction areas, movies, and their own art center. She will be best remembered for her generous nature, love for family, and sweet spirit.

She is survived by her two sons, Jay (Sonya) of Sod, Chris (Sarah) of Alum Creek, grandchildren, Weston and Gavin of Sod, Dylan and Mackenzie of Alum Creek, two brothers David McCormick of Sod and Michael(Diane) McCormick of Crystal River, Florida.

Service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Minister Joseph Watts officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery Sod. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Helen Roberts

Helen L. Roberts, 82, of Sumerco went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 5, 2012.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruford and Freda Means; husbands Walter Mooney and Russell Roberts; and five brothers and sisters.

Helen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to garden, travel and spend time with her entire family and friends. She will be sadly missed by many who loved her.

She is survived by her three daughters: Kathy (Jeff) Crowe, Beverly (Steve) Adkins, Judy (Bill) Word; four step-daughters: Margie Harmon, Joan (Gail) Runyon, Kay (Fred) Pauley and Anita Roberts; sister, Doris Jean (Granville) Coleman; sister-in-law, Roberta Means; ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, five step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. Linda Withrow officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

David W. Hatch

David W. Hatch, 77, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Friday, February 3, 2012 at home after a long illness.

He was the son of the late Jack and Evelyn Hatch (Curry), and preceded in death by brothers, Wayne Florence and Jack Hatch.

David was a 1954 graduate of Charleston High School. He served in the US Air Force from 1956-1960 and retired from the United States Postal Service with 36 years of service. He was a faithful member and trustee of Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Alum Creek.

Those surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ilene Hatch; daughter, Renee (Eric) Smith of Tornado; and grandchildren, Shantel, Dakota, Kiana and Taegan.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday at Independent Missionary Baptist Church of Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday from 4:30 – 6:30 pm at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Independent Missionary Baptist Church, PO Box 65, Alum Creek, WV 25003 or to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25387-2536.

Lorane E. Bird Nunn

Lorane E. Bird Nunn, 89, of Sod, WV passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House following a long illness.  She was born February 22, 1922, to parents, Noah and Eva Bell Bird. She was also preceded in death by husband, Kyle, son, Harold, sister, Shella Lee, brothers, Roy, Howard, Ronald, Henry and Carl and great grandson, Nikolas.  Lorane was a homemaker and a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, where she, through the years, had served as Sunday school teacher and was active in Vacation Bible School. She is survived by daughters, Wanda Smith and husband, David, of St. Albans, Linda Adams and husband, Mike, of Hurricane and daughter-in-law, Lahoma Nunn of Sod.

She is also survived by sister, Connie Leadmon of Hurricane and brother, James (Frank) Bird of Sod. Grandchildren: Stephen Nunn, Melissa Smith, Eric Nunn, Stacey Smith, Stuart Smith, Wendi Adams, Summer Adams, Ben Smith, Kerri Mooney and Jennifer Meadows. Great grandchildren: David Nunn, Cassandra Karnes, Hannah Nunn, Whitney Nunn, Jacob and Elizabeth Mooney, Zane and Carly Wikle, Lilly Smith, Sophie Noto and Jenna Meadows . Great-great granddaughters: Piper Nunn and Aleigh Holley.

A service to honor Lorane ’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. Chester Bird, David Smith and Mark Ruby officiating.Burial will follow at Hayzlett Cemetery Garretts Bend.Friends will gather with the family two hours prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387.  The family would like to thank the staff at Hubbard Hospice House and caregivers, Summer Adams, Jean Dillon and Donna Bryant. Special thanks to those who so lovingly provided care and support during this difficult time.

Michael S. Hughes

Michael S. Hughes, 61, of Drawdy, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday January 25, 2012.

Mike was born on February 18, 1950, to Fred and Nettie (Miller) Hughes and was a lifelong resident of Boone County. He was an electrician in the coal mines and member of the UMWA. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending his time outdoors with his family and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Roger Pauley.

He is survived by his wife of 39 ½ years, Mollie Ann Atkins Hughes; his sons, Michael L. “Mickey” (and Angie) Hughes and Matthew R. (and Sarah) Hughes;granddaughters Vanessa Brooke Hughes and Ammie Nichole Hughes all of Drawdy; his siblings, Freeda (and LeRoy) Crockett of Woodville, Gloria Jean Pauley of Hamlin, Dessie (and Thurman) Lovejoy of Woodville, George (and Sharon) Hughes of Drawdy and Danny (and Teresa) Hughes of Alum Creek; Special Cousin Johnny (and Susie) Long of Sod; special nephews Roger “Peanut” (and Mary) Pauley of Griffithsville, and Travis “Booger” (and Aleisha) Pritt of Stoutsville, Ohio; special Niece Betty “BJ” (and Travis) Jarrell of Drawdy; “grandkids” Branden Jarrell and Layne Daniel of Drawdy and Kate Wall of Comfort; and a host of family and friends.

A graveside service will be 1:00 PM Friday January 27, 2012 at the Hughes Family Cemetery Ely Road, Sumerco, with Pastors Roger Halstead and Roger Pauley officiating.

Creed Adkins

Creed Adkins, 76, of Charleston passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012, at CAMC Memorial Division after a short illness. Creed was born September 16, 1935, in Lincoln County, the son of the late Spence and Belle Adkins. He was also preceded in death by all of his siblings, June Meadows (1985), Marcella Adkins (2002), Cecil Adkins (2005) and Cline Adkins (2008). Creed was a 1954 graduate of Duval High School. He attended Morris Harvey (UC) College. He served on the Lincoln County Board of Education. At the time of his election, he was the youngest person to serve in this capacity. He retired from the West Virginia Public Service Commission with over 30 years of service.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in South Charleston, where he was a member of the Chancel Choir and the Singing Men.

Creed was a Shriner, a 33 degree Mason. He was a member of the South Charleston Lions Club with over 40 years of perfect attendance. In recognition of his service to the association, he had received numerous awards including being named a Leonard Jarrett Recipient and a Melvin Jones Fellow. He also served as a District Governor, 1983-1984. He was named a Distinguished West Virginian in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years Sally Jo; one Godson, David Greathouse and his wife Megan, their 4 year old twin boys, Max and Henry, of Asheville, NC. He is also survived by one niece Ann (John) Pauley, two nephews, Larry (Diane) Adkins, Karl (Kelli) Adkins, as well as numerous cousins and close friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Harry Duncan, Dr. James Lohan, and Dr. William Harris for the excellent care Creed received during his illness. We would also like to thank the staff at CAMC Memorial for their care and concerns. Your kindness will always be remembered by our family.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm Sunday, January 22, at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Rev. Tom Nolan and the Rev. Jodie Pistore officiating.

Interment will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey

Visitation will be 6:00pm to 8:00pm Saturday, January 21, at the funeral home as well as one hour prior to the service.

Marcel Lee Dunlap

Marcel Lee Dunlap, 85, of Alum Creek went home to the Lord Thursday, January 12, 2012 at home.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and the Korean War. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church and lifetime member of the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

He was preceded in death by son, Scotty.

Marcel is survived by his wife of 64 years, Norma; seven children: Jim (Diana), Roger (Clara), Richard (Margaret), Lisa Dunlap, Betty Bragg, Donna Bragg (Arthur Wilson), and Sandy (Ledford) Turley; three sisters, Sherry Thomas, Ardith Dunlap and Bonnie Roberts; sixteen grandchildren, fifty-two great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Monday, January 16, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastors Mike Kordusky and Russell Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions toward funeral services.

Jewell Maxine McClure Adams

Jewell Maxine McClure Adams, 94, of Yawkey, WV, beloved mother and grandmother, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 , at Genesis Teays Valley.

She was born September 19,1917 in Lincoln County, WV to Sesco and Effie Hale McClure. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleston Adams; children, Danny Adams and Louise Tackett; sons-in-law, Harold Nunn, Stan Zemenick and Ted Tackett and a daughter-in-law, Ann Adams.

Maxine is survived by three daughters, Lucille Zemenick, of Charleston, SC, Jewell (Richard) Belcher and Lahoma Nunn, all of Sod; a son, Harley Adams of Gary, IN; and a daughter-in-law, Lisa Adams of Hurricane, WV.

She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

She was the oldest member of Beech Grove Baptist Church in Yawkey, WV. She enjoyed reading her Bible, tending to her garden and was well known by her grandchildren to be fond of chocolate candy and ice cream.

Funeral services will be 2:00pm Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Mays Cemetery, Yawkey.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Howard Eugene Johnson

Howard Eugene Johnson, 87, of Poca, formerly of Sod, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington.

He served in the U.S. Army and Air Force during WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Wars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Hughes Johnson, his parents and five siblings.

Howard is survived by two daughters: Wanda Sue (Rickey) Wade of Yawkey; Lisa Hanson of St. Albans; two sons, Harold (Rhonda) Johnson of Palm Coast, FL; and John Johnson of Poca. Nine grandchildren: Denise Brink, Yvonne Johnson, Chandra Clark, Jason Wade, Jeremy and Michael Johnson, Jessica Klotzbach, Jennifer Snow and Sarah Hanson; and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 3:00 pm Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Dwight Priestley officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. Family and friends will gather from 1 – 3 pm Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
