Russell AshworthRussell Lee “Pete” Ashworth, 78, of Alum Creek went to be with the Lord in the faith and promise of Jesus Christ.  A Christian since April 1960, “I have nothing to bragg about save the Lord.”

He served in the U. S. Marines from 1953 – 1961 and was a 33 year employee of Union Carbide Rhone-Poulenc and a member of Independent Missionary Baptist of Alum Creek.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dohnna Means Ashworth; parents, Ernest E. and Ida Mays Ashworth; sisters, Margaret Songer and Evelyn Evans; brothers, Grover Atlee, Paul Y. and Lovell Ashworth; brothers-in-law, Paul Songer, Charles Evans and Darrell McMellon.

He is survived by his loyal fiancee, Loleta Justice; adopted son, Mark Ashworth; stepson, Freddie Jansohn and wife and their children; brothers, Charles E. and wife, Louise Ashworth; sisters, Judy McMellon Black and husband, Fred, and Carolyn Sue and husband, James McClure; and many nieces, nephews and family members.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Friday, April 11, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek, with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.  The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Edward E. Vickers

Ed VickersEdward E. Vickers, 86 of Alum Creek, WV went home to be with the Lord , on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Hospice West, South Charleston, WV after a brief illness. He was born May 22, 1927 at Nellis, WV and he was a former resident of Alkol, WV.

Ed was employed by Appalachian Construction Company with 40 years of service, retiring as Vice President. He was a WWII Navy Veteran.

Surviving – his loving wife of 70 years, Garnett Ford Vickers, daughters Vicki (Robert) Stevens, South Charleston and Melinda (John) Moore, Charleston and son, Paul Edward (Connie) Vickers Hurricane. Grandchildren: Patricia Smith Roberts, Jenny Smith Commins, Paula Vickers Lawson, Thomas Moore, Allison Moore, Caroline Moore and 8 Great Grandchildren. Sisters: Carol Vickers Matthews of Sumerco and Jean Vickers Pauley of Yawkey and brother Richard Vickers of Sumerco.

At Mr. Vickers’s request his body was donated to Marshall University Medical School.

A Memorial Service will be at 6:00PM Wednesday, April 9, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Keith George officiating. Friends may call from 4:00PM to 6:00PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Ed Jackson

The passing of a great man

Eddie D. Jackson (Ed) entered eternity peacefully, surrounded by all those who loved him deeply on April 3, 2014 at 5:05 p.m.

Ed was born on the 21st of July 1946 and for the past 14 years fought a courageous battle with prostate cancer.  He was a member of Bible Center Church and a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Ed was one of God’s best encouragers, always ready with an uplifting word; a generous and gracious reflection of His Father.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Ruby Virginia Jackson-Gatens; sister Ann Siders; brother, William Jackson; and grandson, Asher Paul Spurlock.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; children, Bryan Craig Jackson of Charleston, Julie Jackson-Drummond (Chris) of Huntington, and stepson, Jordan Paul Spurlock (Mindy) of S. Charleston; grandchildren:  Evelyn Grace Drummond, William Jackson Drummond, Ivy Jean Drummond, Jakob James Whitlock and Aaron Lee Spurlock; brothers, Donald “Sonny”  Jackson (Jean) of Fort Worth, TX, Jerry Ray Jackson of Charleston, Jimmie Wayne Jackson (Linda) of Laporte, IN and Teddie DeWayne Jackson of Charleston; sister, Agnes Fay Morton of Charleston.

Ed was a graduate of the University of Charleston.  His love of people and desire to help others lead him to a successful career with Northwestern Mutual Life (NML) as a Certified Financial Planner for over forty years.  Ed was a Million Dollar Roundtable (MDRT) qualifying and life member for over thirty years. He was recognized with many awards and honors including Master Achievement Awards, Forum, and others with NML.  His leadership, dedication and hard work to the industry aided many clients in reaching their financial goals.

Being an avid golfer, Ed was a member of Berry Hills Country Club where he served on the Board of Directors for six years.  In 2012, Ed founded the annual “Evans Cup” which honored the club’s employees.

The funeral service will be Monday, April 7, 2014 at Bible Center Church, 100 Bible Center Drive, South Charleston, with Pastors Eric Mounts and Shawn Thornton officiating.  Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.  The family will receive friends 11:00 am – 1:00 pm with the funeral service following.

The family would like to extend a special “thank you” to the staff of the David Lee Cancer Center, specifically Dr. Steven Jubelirer and Donna Tittle for years of extraordinary care and encouragement. And too, all of our closest family and friends who have faithfully prayed for Ed and his family.

David Preston Gillispie

David Gillispie
David Preston Gillispie, 57, of Alum Creek, died at home on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

He was a member of the UMWA, and was an expert in mining reclamation. He served in the US Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold & Isabelle Gillispie. He is survived by his sons: David (Tara) Gillispie; and Jason”Sparky” (Cindy) Gillispie; daughter: Ann Marie Johnson; Brother: Buzzy Gillispie, and sisters: Deborah K. Marler, and Pamela Cook; former daughter-in-law: Amanda; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1:00pm on Monday, April 7, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made toward funeral expenses.

Connie E. Smith Fowler

Connie FowlerConnie E. Smith Fowler , 62, of Leon, formerly of Alum Creek, went to be with the Lord Friday March 28, 2014 at her home with family and friends at her side.

She was  retired from the State of West Virginia Social Security Division.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Mary Jane Smith.

She is survived by her children, Tina Smith(Phillip) of Leon and Elbert(Jessica) Fowler of Big Chimney; life long partner, Damon Harrison; brother, Conrad Smith of South Charleston; sister, Imogene Purdue of Comfort; 12 grandchildren, Nathan, Cody, Austin, Morgan, Abby, Skylor, Sydney, Lenzy, Stevie, Brady, Brex, Alijiah; great granddaughter, Kynzie, and one on the way due October 6.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery at Ashford.  The family will receive  friends one hour prior to the service.

William Ray Taylor, 70, of Alum Creek, went home Friday, March 21, 2014, at Hubbard Hospice House .

He was retired from Kanawha Valley Transit Authority.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Ovie Taylor; mother, Bessie Gandy Taylor Bullard and step-dad, W.C. Bullard; grandson: William Ray Taylor III; and brothers: Steve and Charles Taylor.

He is survived by his wife: Mona; children, William Ray Taylor II of North Carolina;
Leah & Gus Barbarito, of Vienna, William & Lisa Holstein of St. Albans;, James & Carrie Taylor of Alum Creek; brothers, Willard & Linda Taylor of Sissonville, Wilbur and Jean Taylor and Tim Taylor all of Ohio, Kenny & Carol Larch of Roane County; sister, Clorena & Mike McClanahan of Sissonville, and special aunt, Irene Ferrell; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00pm Monday, March 24, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Brounland Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be one hour prior to the service.

Emma TigheEmma Katherine “Kathy” Pauley Tighe, 74 of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Friday, March 21, 2014 after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Martin Noel Tighe, parents Hobert and Tina Pauley, and brothers James, Fray, and Paul Pauley.

She was retired from the state of West Virginia where she started her 37-year tenure with the Medicaid Program, and completed her career as the executive secretary at Bureau of Senior Services.

Kathy was a member of Hilltop Baptist Church  where she served as the pianist. During her life she enjoyed singing southern gospel music with various quartets throughout West Virginia. She helped provide for her family by being the greatest homemaker, canning, cooking, sewing, and also perfecting her WV hotdog chili.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Gail Price (Jack Rice); son, Michael Sean Tighe (Lori Tighe); daughter, Staci Anne Tighe (Terry Moselhy); and two very special grandchildren, Emily Michelle Tighe and Michael Martin Tighe as well as sister-in-law Betty Pauley of Virginia; nieces and nephew, Sandy Thornhill, Patricia Bryant, Debbie Bryant, Dexter Pauley; and many loving cousins – especially Ralph Pauley, and her best friend of 50 years, Peggy Pritt Cooley. She will be dearly missed by her many friends and church family.

A gospel sing in celebration of her life will be 2:00 PM Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Hilltop Baptist Church 626 Childress Road, South Charleston, with Pastor Jim Lennox officiating.

Charles Edgar Newcomer

Charles Newcomer Charles Edgar Newcomer 61, of Spring Hill Mountain, passed away Sunday March 16, 2014,

He was preceded in death by his daughter Crystal and brother Jerry.

He served in the Army during Vietnam where he was stationed in Germany and was a retired auto painter and very proud of his Native American background.

He is survived by his children; Paula Newcomer (Charles Pearson), Erica (Steve) Fletcher, Trish Newcomer (Phil Wiles), Stormy Newcomer, Charles Richard (Jordan) Newcomer, sister, Anita Jo Carlton, grandchildren, Byron, Keshon and Jordyn Fletcher, Trenton Newcomer, Lakin Wiles and Mathew Payne Newcomer, nephews, James Blake, and Thomas Newcomer, Jeromey and Jerry Dale Newcomer.

Service will be 2:00 PM Friday March 21, at Mallory Airport, Spring Hill Mountain with Pastor Benny Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Mallory Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family request contributions go toward the funeral services.

Bill Wade

 

Doctor William “Bill” Wade, 64, of Griffithsville went to be with the Lord Friday, March 14, 2014 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born October 26, 1949 to the late Emmitt Edgar and Erma Mae Wade. He was a retired Production Foreman with East Resources, which once was Pennzoil Co., at Yawkey, with over 32 years service.

Bill was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and neighbor. He loved to farm, grow tobacco, hay and a big garden; he also enjoyed raising cattle. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church and also attended Sand Fork Baptist Church; he loved the Lord so very much.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Ricky and Bobby Wade.

Bill leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Sharon K.; daughters, Teresa (Brian) Shreve of Hewett and Tina (Steve) Nolen of Charleston; son, William “Billy” (Tina D.) Wade of Barboursville; grandchildren, Victoria and Kaitlyn Shreve, Austin (Little Man) and Brooklynn Nolen and Sophie Grace Wade; sister, Janice (Bill) Fore; brothers, Freeman (Wilma), Dale (Frances) and Joe (Jeannie) Wade. Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Homer Hensley, Mark Ruby and Pastor Dave Vickers officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family wishes to thank Hospice, Dr. Moussa, CAMC and all the neighbors who were such a great help to our family.

Phillip Russell Lovejoy

Phillip Russell Lovejoy, 46, of Costa, WV was called home today to be with our Lord and Savior surrounded by his loving family due to a long illness. He was a 1986 Duval High School graduate in the top ten of his class.

He enlisted in the Army after graduating, he did his basic training at Fort Knox, KY, then deployed to Germany where he finished his army career; after returning home he took a job with Shawnee Hills as a BHT working with MRDD population, and took extra studies on TBI where he excelled. He was a very loving and caring person, and had compassion for everyone, loved everyone he met; prayed for everyone every day of his life; never forgetting anyone. He gave kisses and jewels to everyone, and now those kisse and jewels are sent to Heaven with him.

He was my precious angel here on earth. Life will never be the same without you, my heart is broken but you received your wings today and we will meet again when I get my wings. Rest in peace son.

He is preceded in death by his Popaw John E. Dolin, Poppie Lovejoy, Granny Irene J. Dolin, Aunt Lilly G. Dolin, Cousins, Kevin Wayne Dolin and Timmy Holstine and his biological father, Phillip M. Lovejoy.

He is survived by his loving mother, Phyllis Hinkle, his dad, Tom Hinkle and loving stepmother Sandy Hinkle, brother Scott Douglass and wife Abby Lovejoy; sisters and best friend Tammy Lovejoy and Jessica (Travis) Morton; nephews: Hank D., Eric, Joshua, Matthew, and Zack Lovejoy; nieces, Shylowe and Max Lilly; great nephew, Cameron Lovejoy, Frannie Chase, and Steven & Megan; uncles, Pete Dolin, Hank Dolin, Steve Dolin, Johnny Dolin and aunts: Susie McClain, Midge Dolin and Shirley Holstine.

The Family will be holding a private memorial service at a later date.
