Monna Shearer Skaggs

Monna Skaggs PhotoMonna Shearer Skaggs, 81, of Chesapeake, W. Va., received her angel wings Monday, March 13th, after peacefully passing at Hubbard Hospice House.

Monna is preceded in death by her mother, Ada Harless; and her brothers, Dennis, Jimmy and Richard Harless.

Those left to cherish her memory include:  her loving, adoring husband of 40 years, Stan Skaggs; her beloved children: sons, Alan (Angela) Shearer, Randy (Paulette) Shearer, Terry (Mary) Shearer and daughter, Betty (Hamida) Neghmouche; 7 grandchildren that she adored:  Ashley, Christopher, Jonathan, Justin, Mikia, Brittany and Karima; and 4 great-grandchildren that made her life complete:  Lucas, Brylee, Cayson and Kyla.   Stepdaughters:  Gloria Boyce and Linda Ryan; 7 step grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by loving sisters, Sue Cline (Ranny) and Mary Lou (John) Simak; brothers, Kenneth Harless (Sonya) and Roger Harless.

A celebration of life for Monna will be  at 1:30 p.m.  Friday, March 17th, at the Abounding Grace Church of God, 120th Street, Chesapeake (a place held dear to Monna, as she had been a faithful member for over 60 years),  with Pastors Kenneth Hatfield and Rick Peters officiating. Burial will follow at the Kanawha Valley Gardens, Glasgow.  Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church.

A warm-hearted thank you to the staff at 5 Front CAMC Memorial and also Hubbard Hospice House for taking such great care of Monna;  and a special thanks to Dr. Mulinti for the compassionate care he provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks  donations be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV  25387.

 

Alvie Dunlap

Alvie DunlapAlvie Frazier Dunlap, 45, of St. Albans passed away from this world into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday March 12, 2017, at home after a sudden illness.

Alvie was born and raised in Lincoln County, WV to the late Billie & Betty Dunlap.  Alvie is also preceded in death by his sister Belinda Smith.

Alvie was an active member of Mr. Tabor Church of God for over 18 years.  He served as elder, Sunday School Superintendent and choir member.  He loved his church family and  loved the Lord above all.  He showed Christian love to everyone he met.  He worked for Ziebart in Charleston for 25 years and loved to hunt.

Alvie is survived by his loving wife of almost 19 years,  Mary, who Alvie adored and gave so much love to.  He is also survived by his absolute pride and joy and very best friend, his adoring son, Riley, at home.  Also left to miss Alvie are his brothers, Billy (Susan) and Fred (Nancy) Dunlap, sister, Alice (Barry) Meadows, mother-in-law, who Alvie was caregiver for, Sue Boso, brother-in-law Chuck (Sharon) Boso, sister-in-law Jenny (Glenn) Woodall; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews (including three on the way), aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.  Alvie also leaves behind his two kitty cats, Dusty & Luna.

Services 2:00pm on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Mt. Tabor Church of God with Pastor Steve Blake officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, St. Albans.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers family requests contributions toward funeral services.

Charles ByrdCharles William “Butch” Byrd, 65, of Hurricane, (formerly of Sod) passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at home.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Naomi Byrd.

He was a retired coal miner.

He is survived by his children: Charlie (Tirra) Byrd; Billy (Anna) Byrd, Andrea (John) Frame, Tiffany (Joe) DeBord and T.J. (Amber) Dillo; father, Calvin Byrd; brother, Arthur (Rita) Byrd, sister, Deborah Litton; eight grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating.  Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod.  Friends and family may gather one hour prior to the service.

 

Felicia Nicole Miller

Felicia Nicole Miller, 28, of Dunbar, formerly of Sod, went home to the Lord Sunday, March 5, 2017.

She is survived by her mother, Teresa Miller; father, John Miller; half-sisters, Emily Reed and Tiffany Hall; and grandmother, Easter Alice Miller.

A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Lively Cemetery, Sod, with Pastor Paul Little officiating.

Ruby Shaffer PhotoRuby J. Shumate Harrah Shaffer, 82, was a beautiful and loving soul created by our father in heaven went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 5, 2017, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born in Kayford, WV in 1934, to Ora & Lucy Crank Shumate.  She grew up in a large family with ten siblings; Olive, Billie, Anna, Wanda, Charlotte, Linda, Sonja, George, William & Clayton.  While working at Kanawha Valley Hospital she met Robert Matthew Harrah.  They married and started a home in Brounland, WV, where they had five children; Robert, David, Debra, Kathy & Steven.  They were together 25 years.  She met and later married Dannie B. Shaffer and moved to Legg Fork Road, Pocatalico, WV.

While raising a family, she attended WV State College and earned a degree in education.  She taught kindergarten at Alum Creek Elementary for several years and realized her passion was nursing.  She obtained employment at CAMC; where she loved and cared for patients for 17 years before health issues forced her into disability then retirement.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; Robert M. Harrah, Sr., and Dannie B. Shaffer; parents, Ora & Lucy Shumate; sisters, Olive Schmidt, Juanita Shumate, Wanda Davis, Anna Smith, Sonja Harness; and brothers George & William Shumate.

She is survived by her children: Robert M. ((Geeta) Harrah, Lancaster, OH; David T. (Sherry) Harrah, Spring Hill, FL; Debra K. (Jonathan) Bechard, Vancouver, Washington; Kathy L. Harrah, Whitesville, WV and Steven A. (Janice) Harrah, Columbus, OH; 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sisters; Billie Jean Borghese, Litasea, IL, Charlotte Brynes, Franklin, OH, Linda Cassidy, Hamilton, OH and brother, Claytonn Thomas Shumate, Chicago, IL.

Her life here on earth was blessed with singing gospel music at various churches throughout Kanawha, Lincoln, and Boone Counties.  She loved to read, study and spread the word of her father in heaven.  She believed that if you are going to send flowers to someone do it before they leave this life, and the same with visiting friends and family.  She did not know a stranger.  Her love will live on in each person she touched throughout her life.  In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to Hospice House, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25387.

John E. Rabel

We have lost a wonderful, caring man who had a wealth of knowledge and a deep love for farming the land.  He was a man everyone would be proud to have ever known, let alone to have had as a relative, friend and neighbor.  We are happy and proud to have the memories of our time spent with him.  He will be missed for sure and his memories cherished!

John E. Rabel, 70, of South Charleston went home Friday, March 3, 2017 at home.

He was an operator and retired from Dupont Chemical,  and was a lifetime farmer.  John served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.   He was also a charter member of The Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Phyllis Pauley; uncles Tom, Keith and Bernie Rabel; aunts, Charlotte McGraw and Shirley Holstine.

John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Brenda; children, Thomas E. Rabel,  Margaret-Anne (Richard) Boggess and John B. (Angie) Rabel; sister, Charlene (Jeff) Ray; grandchildren, T. Anthony, Laura, McKennah, Haley, Ella & Beau Rabel; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Rev. Tommy Roberts officiating.  Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum in South Charleston with military graveside honors conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.    The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in memory of John be made to the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 Relief Fund, 4443 Brounland Road, Alum Creek, WV  25003.

Dolores Irene Stockman

Dolores StockmanDolores Irene Stockman. 84, of Sod, formerly of Gassaway, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at home.

She was preceded in death by her four brothers, Jack, Johnny, Jimmy, & Tommy Wiggin, and great granddaughter, Bethany Rundgren.

She was a Christian, devoted wife, mother and homemaker.  Dolores loved and was loved by everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jack;  daughters, Pamela Stockman, Kathy (Melvin) Griffith & Gwendolyn Stockman; son, John Stockman (Heather Gibbs); brother,  Phillip (Sharon) Wiggin; sister, Mildred (Gwendene) Hale; grandchildren, Jason Young, Regina (Alan) Rundgren, Brent (Brittany) Griffith, Marty Griffith, Jack Tulley, Brandon Lamar, Bruce and Jesse McCallister, Jackie, Jade Stockman, Terry Simmons and Travis Stockman; great grandchildren, Draven, Darrah and Jarred Young; Beckett, Brinley and Kanden Griffith; Amarie and Farnie Williams; Gabriel Grounds and Liam Simmons.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2017 at Sunrise Church in Sutton with Pastor Jim Criner officiating.  Burial will follow at Jacob Shaver’s Memorial Cemetery on Sunrise Road off Exchange Road.    The family will receive friends  1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Clarence Ray Roberts

Clarence RobertsIn loving memory of Clarence Ray Roberts, 78, of Griffithsville born on December 20, 1938 and  passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at home.

He was the son of Esau Roberts and Audrey Curry;  he was preceded in death by his brothers, Maxwell, Edward, Jimmy and Benjamin; and sisters, Lorraine Vickers, Wilcie Egnor, Eldor Flowers and Mary Harless.

Clarence is survived by his sister, Ivola Starcher; son, Kenny Ray (Melissa) Harless; daughter, Rita Marie Harless; sister, Ivola Starcher; and grandson, Kenny Thomas Ray Harless.

There will be no service.  Burial will be at Roberts Cemetery in Woodville.

Reba Fern Woodrum

Reba WoodrumReba Fern Woodrum, 84, of  Sumerco was born December 21, 1932 and went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 25, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late Earl and Nola Loftis of Sumerco and wife of the late Boyd Woodrum.  She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Dorothy Lovejoy and Betty Tyler.

Fern was a homemaker, mother and a Christian.

She is survived by sons, Bobby, Joey (Pam), Keith (Carla), Jeff and Chris (Angie) Woodrum; daughter, Barbara (Jimmy) Armstrong; 29 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at the Moore Cemetery in Sumerco.   The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Thelma TormanThelma Torman, 85, of Griffithsville went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.

She was a longtime member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church and was retired from the Lincoln County Board of Education.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husbands Billy Dunlap and Homer Torman; and grandchildren, Angie and Richard.

She is survived by her children, Rick (Judy) Dunlap, Lil (Dewayne) Gibson and Kathy (Bobby) Powell; grandchildren, Marketta (Joey), Shawn (Andrea), Bart (Andrea) and Brian; 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 26, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Homer Hensley, Richard McCallister and Mark Ruby officiating.  Burial will follow at Sansom Cemetery in Griffithsville.  The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
