Sandra Lynne Skeenes, 77, died at her home in Alum Creek on Friday, March 15, 2019.

Born October 16, 1941, Charleston, W.Va., she spent her entire life promoting music excellence in many communities in Colorado, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Maryland and West Virginia, including teaching voice, piano and instruments to numerous youth and adults. She served in many churches, finishing her service at Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek, where she served as music director and accompanist. She graduated from Charleston High School, Carson-Newman University and Florida State University, and studied at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Allen Skeenes and Lenora Miller Skeenes. Survived by siblings Jerry Skeenes (Kathern), Alum Creek; Edward Skeenes (Sharon), Maryville, Tenn.; Barry Skeenes, Charleston; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Funeral will be 2:00 PM Saturday, March 23, at the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, corner of Coal River Rd. and Route 214, with Pastor Keith George officiating. Visitors will be received from 12-2 PM at the Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Forks of Coal Baptist Church Music and Audio/Visual Department, P.O. Box 506, Alum Creek, WV 25003.

Jonathan Howell Akers, 21, formerly of Charleston, WV, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 5, 2019, at his residence in Long Beach, CA.

Jonathan was a 2016 graduate of Hurricane High School, and most recently was a student at WVU and WV State University.  We will cherish the memories of his adventurous spirit, his love of mountain biking, snowboarding, hiking and camping.

He is survived by his parents, Jon & Jeannie Akers, and grandparents, Fred & Karen Akers and Bob & Blair Howell all of Charleston.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.     A committal service will follow at French Cemetery in Charleston.

Joshua Lee “Birdie” Mullins, 42, of Ashford, formerly of Chapmanville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at home.

Joshua was the administrative operations clerk for the State of WV at the West Virginia National Guard Armory.  He was raised in Trinity Freewill Baptist Church, Henlawson.  He was a 1994 graduate of Chapmanville High School where he was a member of the baseball team all four years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ricky Mullins.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Lou Mullins, mother Shelia Mullins of Chapmanville, brother Jeremy (Erika) Mullins of Mooresville, NC, sister Laura Mullins of South Charleston, father-in-law and mother-in-law Eddie and Wanda Holstein, nieces and nephews Braydon, Kaylee, Kaegan, Chace, Wyatt, Allyson, Aubrey, and Julien; he is also survived by his four fur babies.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Joey Kennedy officiating.  Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Chapmanville.

The family will receive friends  from 6 to 8 PM Friday at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.

Christine Kay Thacker, 60 of Alum Creek, died March 9, 2019 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.

Christine was born on December 11, 1958 in Chicago, IL to the late Sam and Margaret Wright.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands; Edward “Buck” Spencer and Michael Thacker; and two brothers, Dave and Joe Wright.

She is survived by her children, Christopher Spencer (Angie) and twins, Stephan Wright and Stephanie Roberts; grandchildren, Mark, Hannah and Natalie Wright and Lela Roberts; siblings, Rona (Tom) Schmidt, Twin Brother, Chris (Hope) Wright, Gary (Connie) Wright, Helen (Boone) Dawson, Verle (Teresa) Wright, Hubert (Cindy) Wright, and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Christine’s life will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

Cline Lacy’s faith gave way to sight on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, as he came face to face with Jesus.  Cline was born on April 4, 1926, to the late Watson & Ova Lacy.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Betty Lacy, and their son, Harse Lacy.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving children, Vinell Lacy, Skip (Tammy) Lacy, Randall (Brenda) Lacy, Ashley (Debbie) Lacy and Marlene (John) Solberg; grandchildren, Chris, Nick, Miranda, Preston, Chastity, Amanda, Kelli, Rachel and Joseph; great-grandchildren, Collin, Emma, Taya, Bailea, Isaiah, Victoria, Malachi, Kenley, Isabella, Issac, Jackson and Austin.  He left one brother, Dillon Lacy, and Ron Smith who was like a son.

He was retired from C&O Railroad.

We would like to give special thanks to Melissa Lacy for the wonderful love and care she provided over the last several months and to Dempsey Lacy for visiting him often and being there when needed.

Cline was a Christian and a man of great faith.  Cline loved picnics and telling stories about old times.  He was proud of the beautiful garden he grew until he was 89 years young.  He enjoyed hiding the children’s shoes as a fun game.  He also loved hunting and shooting.  But his favorite past time was taking silly pictures with Emma.  There was never a time that you visited that he did not remark “When you coming back”.

The greatest gift he left was the promise that we will see him again.  He did not say “Goodbye”, instead, he said “I’ll see you later”.  Every night before going to bed he would ask the Lord to save his family.  His greatest desire in life was to see each and everyone of his family in Heaven.

The family will have a celebration of his life with a graveside service at 1:00pm, Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Sumerco, with Pastor David Bragg officiating.

Paula Jane Priestley, 67 of St. Albans, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at Hubbard Hospice House West, South Charleston.

Paula was a graduate of Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey and attended Bergen Community College. She worked as a model in New York City and was the owner of P.J.’s Boutique in Ridgefield, NJ.  Paula was a Christian.  She wrote poetry, was an avid reader, and had a tremendous appetite for learning.  She was a caregiver to her parents and grandparents.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helen Pauley Priestley; brother, Michael Hendershot and her beloved Sheltie, Garbo.

Paula is survived by her life partner, Natchee Proctor of St. Albans; brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Michelle Priestley of Hamlin.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday March 8, 2019 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Daniel Dent officiating.  Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park, Hamlin.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Lannie Lloyd Kidd, 64, of Alum Creek, WV,  went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 22, 2019 at CAMC General Hospital after a short illness.

He was born May 29, 1954 in South Charleston and was a graduate of Duval High School.  He received a Bible degree from Liberty Baptist Bible Institute, Lynchburg, VA and was a former employee of Hecks, Royal Oldsmobile, and Cambridge.  Lannie was an active member of the Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Alum Creek where he sang in the choir, served as an usher and helped with other ministries of the church. On October 9, 1982 he married the love of his life, Patty Chandler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Westean Kidd,  father-in-law Junior Chandler, and brothers-in-law Harold Bennett and Richard Bowles.  Lannie is survived by his loving wife Patty, brother Richard Kidd of Alum Creek, sister Annette Parcell (Roger) of Alum Creek, mother-in-law Anna Chandler, sisters-in-law Marlene Kidd, Dorean Bennett, Melinda Bowles and Janet McClure (Dwight), brother-in-law Jackie Chandler, nephews and nieces Darrin Williams (Leslie), Christopher Kidd (Tammy), Jonathan Kidd, Teresa Ogle, Tonia Stephens, Michael Bowles, Christopher Chandler, Jessica Davis, and Kelly Chandler.  Lannie is also survived by several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2019 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Daniel Dent officiating.  Burial will be in Lively Cemetery, Sod.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Betty Jean Searls, 58, of South Charleston, WV, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2019 at home.

Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Rozella Monroe Bennett.

She is survived by her father, Edwin “Bud” Bennett; companion of 14 years, Charles Vandall; two sons, Ronnie and Ricky Mitchell; brothers, Robert Bennett and John (Terri) Bennett.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Ohio.

Sharon Ann Mynes, 57, of Hurricane, WV, formerly of Sod, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2019, after a short illness at CAMC Teays Valley in Hurricane.

Per her request, she will be cremated and there will be no services.

Bonnie Satterfield, 80, of Griffithsville, WV, went home Monday, February 11, 2019, at Hubbard Hospice House West in South Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie; son Kenneth Ray Satterfield, grandson Donald Eugene Baker III, parents Earl and Ethel Marie Coates Dent, sister Betty Waldron and brother Billy Ray Dent.

Bonnie was a member of the Yawkey Methodist Church.

She is survived by daughters Geneva Bell of Griffithsville, Debbie Satterfield of Little River, SC, and Sylvia (Donald) Baker of Hamlin, son Jerry (Kim) Satterfield of Griffithsville, sister Barbara Graham, granddaughters BreAnn, Stacy and Kacey, grandsons Justin and Jacob, and eight great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek, with Pastors Butch Loftis and Jimmy Lawrence officiating. Interment will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens in Yawkey. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
