Lynda Joyce Corns Brady

Lynda Joyce Corns Brady, 71, went home to her loving Savior Monday, February 24, 2020 after a short illness.

Born September 3, 1948 in Charleston, WV, to Cesil and Bessie Corns.

A 1966 graduate of George Washington High School, she was a homemaker and florist before her second career as a teacher and librarian in Kanawha and Putnam Counties.  She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in education from WV State and Master’s in Library Science from Marshall.  She retired from Poca High School.

Lyn was an active member of Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans, WV.  She particularly enjoyed helping in the kitchen and singing in the choir.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years Elbert B. Brady, son Jeff Brady (Carolyn), daughter Lori Brady Choueiri (Mark), her beloved grandchildren Jeb, Matthew, Will, Alana, Nate, and Ariana, sister Kitty Corns, and nephew Brandon Corns (Rebecca). 

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 29, 2020, at the Highlawn Baptist Church, 2504 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans.   The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Charles Lewis Mynes

Charles Lewis Mynes, 85, of Charleston, WV, went home to be with the Lord Monday, February 24, 2020 at The Village at Riverview in Barboursville, WV.

He retired from the West Virginia Department of Employment Security.  He was a member of the Kanawha City Church of Christ where he served as a deacon.

Charles is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dora; daughter, Elizabeth (Gordon) Ingold of Charleston; and grandchildren, Nick, Jack and Catherine Ingold.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Minister Joseph Watts and Gordon Ingold officiating.  Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans.   The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Norman “Scotty” Antill

Norman “Scotty” Antill, 67, of Charleston (formerly of Cameo) gained his wings Sunday, February 23, 2020, at CAMC-General Division, after a long illness.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Barbara “Boots” Antill and nephew, Baby Tom. 

His passion was Interior Design and he could take nothing and make it into something.  When Scott was able he loved coming home to the mountaintop where he was born and raised to spend time with family. 

Scott is survived by his sister, Becky (Bob), Erie, PA, and brothers, Andy (Robin), Cameo, and Todd (Jane), Cameo, WV.  He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

A gathering for family & friends will be from 6:00 – 8:00pm Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.  A private burial will be at Antill Cemetery, Cameo. 

James Roy “Jim” Parsons

James Roy Parsons, 64, went to his heavenly home on Monday, February 17, 2020, surrounded by his children and family.

Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, on April 1, 1955, he was the son of Gene Parsons (Hurricane) and Sue Foster (deceased).   He was raised by his grandparents, Rev. Lee Roy and Enola Parsons, in the Baptist church.  He was also preceded in death by grandparents, Jim and Maggie Whitman and grandson, Asher Spurlock.

Jim attended George Washington High School.  He retired from CASCI after becoming disabled in 1999.  He had also worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield and Wackenhut Security.  Jim was always an avid Mountaineer fan, as well as, a die-hard Lakers and Minnesota Vikings fan.  He enjoyed watching sports on TV of almost any kind. He also enjoyed fishing and playing basketball, he loved to sketch and write poetry, and more than anything else in this world he loved his children and grandchildren.

He is also survived by his children, Terri Lovejoy (Robbie), Travis Parsons (Samantha), and Mindy (Jordan) Spurlock; grandchildren, Jakob Whitlock, Aaron and Ashlyn Spurlock, Cole and Greyson Parsons, Kaiya George, Gabbie and Parker Thornton; sisters, Angela (Perry) Richardson, Diane (Klyde) Bruton and Susan Lavigne (Dale); brothers, Don (Cheryl), Paul, Rodney (Margaret), Marty, Keith (Karie), and Allen; his lifelong friend, Kathy Parsons; and many other family members and friends who will also miss Jim.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Rev. Gary Hall officiating.  Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park in South Charleston.   The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The family wants to express special thanks to the nurses and staff at Thomas Memorial Hospital ICU and Hubbard Hospice House West for the wonderful care given to our father.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial donations to the American Lung/COPD Association or the American Heart Association.

Kathy Lynn Byrd

Kathy Lynn Byrd, 66, of Sod, WV, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston.

She was a Christian.  Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and Izola Meadows, and 2 great grandchildren.

Kathy is survived by her children, Charlie (Tirra) Byrd, Billy (Anna) Byrd and Andrea (John) Frame; brothers, Pastor Paul Meadows and Robert (Jayne) Meadows; sisters, Rhonda “Susie” Holeston and Sandy (Roger) Richmond; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A private service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Paul Meadows officiating.  Burial will follow at the Meadows Family Cemetery in Alkol.   The family will gather one hour prior to the service.

James Edward Ratcliff

James Edward Ratcliff, 85, of Rabel Mountain, Charleston, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

He was a Christian of strong Baptist faith since his youth, serving as a Sunday School teacher and most recently attending Hopewell Baptist Church.

Jim worked in the Chemical Industry for 30 years, retiring as a Plant Manager.  Many will remember him from his years spent in motorcycle, car, RV and boat sales in the Charleston area.  He most enjoyed living and working on his farm.  He pursued multiple hobbies and business ventures into his retirement years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Margie Ratcliff.

Jim is survived by his wife, Anna; children Jim Ratcliff, Jr. (Andrea), Mike (Patty) Ratcliff, Linda (Doug) Moran, Charlie Peters, Kenny (Kim) Peters and Babbe (Stan) Shaver; sister, Dot Myers; fourteen grandchildren, Andria Allen, Michael Webb, Cody Peters, Chris White, Blake Ratcliff, Kaley Pearcy, Brittany Wooten, Emily Guthrie, Adam Peters, Ashton Kelley, Heather Grishaber, Laura Ratcliff, Bethany Ratcliff, and Grace Cipoletti; and fourteen great grandchildren.

Service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 16, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

The Committal Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum in South Charleston. 

Maxfield Smith

Maxfield Smith, 92, of Tornado, WV, left for his Heavenly home on February 10, 2020 at Hospice West in South Charleston after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by 6 sisters, 4 brothers, and parents, Clarence and Lula Smith.

Maxfield is survived by his wife, Beulah “Bea”;  several nieces, nephews and his special nephews, Carlisle, whom he called his brother, and Wayne, who took care of him all the way through his trials. 

A private burial will take place at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery beside his sister, Artie.   Per his request, there will be no service.  A memorial service for friends and family will be held at a later date.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the personnel at Genesis in Dunbar and also to Jackie Berry and Sharon Hudson for their care.

Marilyn Rae Smith

Marilyn Rae Smith, 69, of Alum Creek, WV, went home Thursday, February 6, 2020.

She was a former employee of the Cape Canaveral Space Center in Florida.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Donnie; and aunt Reva from Hinton, WV.

In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no services.

Caleb Skeenes

On February 2, 2020 Caleb Allen Reese Skeenes was called home to be with  the Lord. On April 4, 1995 Caleb was born to Jeremy Skeenes and Nikki Cooper. 

Caleb was blessed with a host of parents. Jeremy and Jamey Skeenes, Nikki and Brandon Bays, Jamie and Callie Hughes all loved and influenced Caleb’s life.

 Caleb adored his family. He loved his brothers and sisters dearly. He was a great big brother to Olivia, Kelcei, Logan, Grayson, Keagan, Avery and Laney. He was always picking on them, playing with them and making them feel special in some way. 

Caleb was a cherished grandson to Kenny and Lynda Lawerence, Jerry and Kathy Skeenes, Barry and Jeanie Hamilton-Smith, Sherry Hughes and Glen and Lisa Hughes. Caleb had a sweet tooth that his Mamaw’s loved to satisfy. 

Caleb had the privilege of knowing his great- grandparents. He loved offering a helping hand to his Papaw Bernie and going to Mamaw Honey’s (Lina Smith) to eat ham. 

Not only was Caleb the first grandson on both sides of the family but he was the first nephew as well. This meant lots of love and extra spoiling. He was the sweetest baby boy that his Aunt Chelsie, Aunt Jacobi and Aunt Crissy got to hold and kiss. 

Caleb had several uncles and aunts Justin (Brooke) Skeenes, Ben (Christy) Smith, Jessica Hamilton, Chelsie (Rusty) Shaffer, Jacobi (Michael) Randall and Michael Hughes that loved him so much. 

He had so many cousins that he loved making memories with, he never wanted to miss a holiday dinner or birthday party with them. 

Caleb was a faithful and loyal friend to so many and will be greatly missed. 

Caleb was preceded in death by several loving great grandparents, Helen Lawerence, Narzie Cooper, Buddy Smith, Lenora and Allen Skeenes, Brookie and Short Breedlove, Great Aunt Sandra Skeenes and his Uncle Blake Smith. 

Caleb was a graduate of Lincoln County High School. He attended Mars Hill College in North Carolina. Caleb loved hanging out with his friends. He was always ready for an adventure with his special cousin BCoop. From kayaking to shooting hoops to skydiving Caleb loved to live life to the fullest. Caleb was always willing to help others and had a beautiful soul. His sneaky smile, Chocolate brown eyes and zeal for life will forever be missed. Caleb leaves behind a legacy of love for his family and friends. He will live on forever in our hearts and will keep his memory alive until we meet again.

Larry Dean Wheeler, Sr.

Larry Dean Wheeler, 80, of St. Mary’s, GA, formerly of Alum Creek, WV went home Monday, January 27, 2020 at the Senior Care Center in St. Mary’s, GA.

He worked as an over the road truck driver and was a Baptist by faith. He was a charter member and former trustee at Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Ettus Banks Wheeler.
He is survived by his children: Robert Wheeler, Connie Wheeler, Denita Kayyali (Ammar), Danielle Wheeler ( Rod), Dawn Miller, and Larry Wheeler, Jr.; brother, Roger (Patsy) Wheeler; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, at the Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Alum Creek with Pastors Frank Chapman and Daniel Dent officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery in Alum Creek. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
