Carolyn Sue Logsdon, 75, of Charleston, WV, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Hubbard Hospice House. She was preceded in death by her husband, Senate “Jake” Logdson and parents Avenell & Kit Meikle.

She was a member of Amy Baptist Church and worked 21 years for the CIA in Washington, DC.

Carolyn is survived by her stepchildren, Rebecca (Dan) Hammond, Jeremy (Jennifer) Logsdon, and Tommy (Amanda) Logsdon. She is also survived by her sister, Kitty (Carl) McCallister and brother, 1st Sgt. Major Joseph Means, and eleven grandchildren.

It was her wish to be cremated. A memorial service will be 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Yawkey Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Jimmy Lawrence officiating. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hillcrest Healthcare Center and Hubbard Hospice House for taking wonderful care of Carolyn.

Karen Lynn Mansfield

Karen Lynn Mansfield, 68, of Sod, WV, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Hubbard Hospice House. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Mansfield, and her parents, Ronald & Gwendolyn Adkins McCallister and son, Jarrod Bias.

Karen was a graduate of Duval High School class of 1973 and WV Junior College. She was a hard-working mother and always on the go. She was employed by CAMC in the recordkeeping department for 13 years.

She is survived by her brother, Ronald McCallister, daughters, Stacy Smith and Christina Bias, 6 grandchildren, Justin Mounts, Brenda, LeAnna, Jarrod “JB”, Autumn and Jeffrey. She is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2023, from 1:00pm – 3:00pm at Curry Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at the McCallister Family Cemetery, Sod, WV.

Barry Franklin Whitten

Barry Franklin Whitten, 54, of Hamlin, WV, was born on April 17, 1969. He went to his heavenly home on November 6, 2023, after losing his long battle with cancer. He attended Open Door Church.

Barry was married to the love of his life, Lori Whitten, his devoted wife of 35 years, whom he met in kindergarten at Woodville Elementary School. They were high school sweethearts and a true picture of enduring love that everyone admired. They married on December 8, 1987. They had a connection like no other that was shown through their unwavering commitment to one another. Barry and Lori shared lifelong memories with one another through spending quality time with their family and supporting one another through life’s struggles. Life wasn’t always easy, but they overcame each battle together with each other’s love and support. Together, they have two children, Zachary Whitten and Dakota Whitten. He thought the world of his two daughters-in-law, Brooke and Brittany. He considered them his daughters.

Zack and Cody were his two very best friends. He enjoyed spending time with his boys. He spent countless hours with his hunting buddy, Zack, and many days on the water with his fishing buddy, Cody. He treasured his family and was devoted to being a husband, father, and papaw. They shared many special moments together.

Barry was a proud papaw to Harper, Colt, Cruz, and Kyn. He spent quality time shopping and hunting with his favorite girl Harper, his finest fishing buddy Colt, and his little hunting buddy Cruz. They always put a smile on his face and in their eyes, there was no one better than Papaw. They were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Barry was a 1987 graduate of Duval High School. He worked for 23 years at Tri-State Roofing-Sheet Metal in Charleston, WV. He started in 2000 and worked his way straight to the top. He was named Superintendent in 2008. He was a selfless leader who valued each team member and loved his work family. He was a hard worker and took pride in his job.

Barry is preceded in death by his father Barry Lewis Whitten, his paternal grandparents Kenneth and Hazel Whitten, his maternal grandparents Don and Juanita Huffman, and his father-in-law, Wayne Roberts.

He is survived by his wife Lori Whitten, two sons, Zachary Whitten (Brooke) and Dakota Whitten (Brittany), four grandchildren Harper, Colt, Cruz, Kyn, mother Kay Davidson, his two sisters Leah Whitten and Deah Allen, mother-in-law Helen Roberts, brother-in-law Randy Roberts, Jerry Roberts (Tina), and sister-in-law Lisa Workman (Kevin). Andy and Becky McClure held a special place in his heart, they were like parents to him. Doug and Stacey Keaton, dependable long-term friends, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and family.

He was truly one of a kind who had the best sense of humor and brought laughter through his storytelling and jokes. He was such a special person who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He will forever be remembered in our hearts.

Services to celebrate Barry’s life will take place at 12:00 pm, Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek, WV with Pastors Andy Gillenwater, Robert McCallister, and Kevin Workman officiating. Burial will follow at Whitten Family Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Friday, November 10, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home.

Bonnie K. Stewart

Bonnie K. Stewart, 72, of South Charleston, went to be with the Lord Friday, November 3, 2023, at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital.

Bonnie was a member of Crooked Creek Church of God. She was a former employee of Walmart in South Charleston and was one of the first librarians at Alum Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Betty Miller Thaxton; husband, Danny Stewart; grandson, Christian Hill, II; in-laws, J.R. & Anne Lee Stewart; and brother-in-law, Mike Pauley.

Bonnie is survived by her children, Robbie (Beth) Stewart, Tina (Christian) Hill, and Jason (Farrah) Stewart; grandchildren, Stanton Hill, Brycon, Ayden & Gloria; great grandchildren, Braydem and Haelyn; brothers, Mark (Louise) Thaxton, Randy (Kathi) Thaxton; sister-in-law, Drema Pauley; aunts, Opal Payne and Kathy Reed; and many nieces, nephew, cousins and friends.

Bonnie truly was a friend to all who knew her and always brought a smile to each one. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching and most of all, spending time with her family. Mom never met a stranger, and her smile was infectious. She loved making others laugh with her jokes.

Service will be 1:00 pm, Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastors Jody Pauley & Mark Thaxton officiating. Burial will follow at Thaxton Family Cemetery, South Charleston. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Genesis Teays Valley Center, CAMC Teays Valley, and Hospice for all their special care of mom.

Doris Jean Tackett

Doris Jean Tackett, 75, of Nellis departed this earthly life on Monday, October 30, 2023, at home surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Freeman and Zena Holstein; sisters, Montana (Paul) Means and Bonnie (Delana) Kirk; brother, Roger Dean Holstein; husband, Carlos Tackett; sons, Freeman Troy Tackett and Carlos Henry Tackett; daughter, Sybil Baldwin; daughter-in-law, Regina Tackett; son-in-law, Donald Conley; and grandson, Donnie Conley.

Doris is survived by her brother, Danny (Deborah) Holstein; children, Teresa Conley, Jerry (Martha) Tackett and Robert Tackett; son-in-law, Tony Baldwin; daughter-in-law, Rachel Blair; 18 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 4 great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Dartmont Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Harold officiating on, Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 12:00pm. Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery in Alum Creek. Friends and family can gather one hour prior to services.

Hank D. Dolin

Hank D. Dolin, 67, of Ridgeview, WV, passed away Monday, October 30, 2023, at 4:32pm at home surrounded by his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John & Irene Dolin, sisters, Phyllis Hinkle and Lilly Gail Dolin, nephews, Phillip R. Lovejoy, Kevin Wayne Dolin, Jamie Egnor and Timothy Holstine.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving and caring soul mate of 28 years, Carolyn Barker and two step-children, Jimmy CC Lucas and Faith Halstead.

He is also survived by his brothers, Johnny Dolin, Roane County, WV, Pete Dolin, Julian, WV, and Steve Dolin, Roane County, WV, and sisters Connie McClain, Hickory, NC, Alice Dolin, Van, WV, and Shirley Holestine, Rock Creek, WV.

He will be sadly missed by all.

Hank’s wishes are to be cremated. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Gaynell Kay Nary

Our precious and adored mother, grandmother, and friend, Gaynell Kay Nary, 84, of Charleston passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday, October 30, 2023, at Hubbard Hospice House after a long and courageous fight.

Gaynell was a 1957 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley WV. Gaynell retired from her 26-year career in November of 1997 as Branch Manager from United Bank.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Thelma Tyree, husband, Charles “Tommy” Nary and sister, Myra Kinder.

Gaynell is survived by her daughter Pam (Stacy) Loftis of Charleston; granddaughter, Brandie (Shane) Richardson of Charleston; great grandchildren, Fenton Nary, Olivia Richardson, and Anna Richardson all of Charleston; stepdaughter, Joanne Braswell of Plano, TX; and her chosen daughter, and family, whom she loved as her own, Teresa (Skee) Barley, Erica Smith and Ian (Kelsey) Barley all of Beckley. She is survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home with Chaplain Skee Barley and Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior starting at 12:00.

Cleophus Robert Booth

Cleophus Robert “Bro T” Booth, 74, of South Charleston, left this world peacefully at home in the presence of family on Friday, October 27, 2023.

Cleophus Booth was a retired military veteran who received a bronze star in the Vietnam War. Mr. Booth also retired from the City of Charleston as the Director of Refuse with over 30 years of service. Mr. Booth was a member of West Side Nazarene Church.

He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, remodeling his home, Sunday cruising on the side-by-side with his best friend, listening to the blues with the brothers at family gatherings, and boating and fishing trips with late wife Pamela Booth and children.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Pamela Booth; brothers, David Booth and John Booth; sister, Tina Marie Booth. Mr. Booth is survived by children, Cleophus Booth, Jr., Angie Fletcher, Nikki Clay (April), and Kimesha Patterson; grandchildren, Djimon Jones, Amos Seabolt, Jonci Saunders and Joshua Booth; brothers, Leroy Booth, Sr. and Kenneth Booth; sister, Yodora Booth; brother from another mother, Gary Eskew; several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Service will be 12:00 pm, Friday, November 3, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Kevin Witcher officiating. Friends and family will gather for the viewing one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The burial will follow at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery.

Kenneth Lee Lawrence

Kenneth (Ken) Lee Lawrence passed away at his childhood home on October 28, 2023 in Sycamore, West Virginia at the age of 61. He was the most selfless devoted husband to his wife Lynda Lawrence. Ken spent most of his life loving his family and the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his mother Helen Lawrence, brother Ronnie Lawrence, mother-in-law Narci Cooper and grandsons Caleb Skeenes and Gae Wood. He is survived by his two daughters Nikki (Brandon) Bays of Saint Albans, West Virginia and Chelsie (Rusty) Shaffer of Griffithsville, West Virginia. His father Frank (Sammy) Lawrence, sister Linda (Junior) Mosteller, father-in-law Bernard Cooper and half siblings Darrien (Trina) Keeling and Joe (Ashley) Wood and Angie and Shawna Keeling along with many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

As much as he loved his two girls, his grandchildren brought him an incomparable amount of joy. Caleb Skeenes, Olivia Hughes, Logan Bays, & Kenzie & Aydin Shaffer were his whole world, & he made sure everyone knew that.

Ken spent most of his time capturing every moment he could have with his family and a new joke was told everyday. He loved to fish and hike. He made wood work and created different pieces. He enjoyed being able to attend every sporting event his grandchildren played and followed them around state to state to watch them play. One of his most memorable moments that he never failed to brag about was being apart of the 1978 Duval High School Football State Championship. Ken put others before himself, his job was based off talking and helping people get through any obstacles that they faced. He was the most selfless man and he will be greatly missed. Though our heart aches we know he was received into the kingdom of heaven where his mother and grandson were there waiting.

Service will be 1:00 PM, Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Sumerco Church of God with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Burial will follow at James E. Stowers Cemetery. Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Gary W. August

Gary W. August, 81, of Charleston, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2023 after a long illness.

He was born March 30, 1942, in Birchton, WV, and was the son of Willie August and Irene Adkins-August.

Gary was the owner of Augie’s Convenience Store. He was retired from August Home Improvement. He was previously employed by the Charleston Police Department as a Patrolman/Detective and worked as an Investigator with the Alcohol Beverage Commission for the State of WV.

Gary held a degree in psychology/sociology and taught sign language at Morris Harvey College.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy Ann Crum-August and son, Gary W. August, Jr., four brothers, two sisters and grandson-in-law, Adam Abdelnabi.

Gary is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Dean and her husband Rick Dean, and Becki Justice and her husband, Mark Justice, grandchildren, Chaz Campbell and his wife, Emmaline, Janessa Campbell, Savannah Chambless and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Dillon and Austin Campbell and Wesley and Grady Campbell.

Service will be 1:00pm Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Yancey officiating. Visitation will be from 11:30 until service time. Private burial will be 11:00am Monday, October 30, 2023, at Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV.
