James C. Smith, Jr. 31 of Sod, died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at Tornado, due to injuries from a farm tractor accident.

He was an employee for the city of St. Albans.

He is survived by his Wife: Kathy; 2 Sons: Jesse Smith at home; Michael Richie of Fredericksburg, VA; 2 Daughters: Danielle Smith and Jamie Smith at home; Step-Daughter: Andrea Posey at home; Mother: Susan Jane Clark of Bronson, FL; Grandmother: Ruth Black of St. Albans; 2 Brothers: Robert Smith of Sod; John Smith of Tornado; Sister:Leslie Cowsky of Chattanooga, TN.

Services will be held at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, Thursday, August 9, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in the Smith Family Cemetery at Sod. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM Wednesday, August 8, 2001 at the funeral home.

Norma Mae Harmon Worstell Bowen, 71 of South Charleston, went to heaven Friday, August 3, 2001. We all will miss her so and know that she is looking down upon us with all her love.

She was a homemaker and a life long resident of Kanawha county.

She is survived by her; 7 Daughters: Ann Hanshaw, Wendy Bowen, Marcie Lyons, Karrie Lovejoy and Lissa Eastwood all of South Charleston; Donna Worstell and Twylla Bays both of Tornado; 1 Son: Scott Worstell of South Charleston; 2 Brothers: Donald Harmon of Lewisburg; Billy Harmon of Loudendale; 3 Sisters: Phyllis Chandler of Toledo, OH; Shirley Turley of Lewisburg; Linda Sue Ferrell of Charleston; 26 Grandchildren; 17 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Monday, August 6, 2001 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Ray H. Armstrong

Ray H. Armstrong, 70 of Beckley, formerly of McCorkle, died Friday, July 27, 2001 at Heartland of Beckley after a long illness.

He had formerly attended McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his: 3 Sisters: Delphia Miller of Charleston; Katherine Dunlap and Freda Dunlap both of McCorkle.

Services will be 1:00 PM Monday, July 30, 2001 at the McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Roe Smith officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle. Friends may call from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday, July 29, 2001 at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

She was retired from Shoney’s.

James Earl Smith, 71 of Racine, Ohio, formerly of Lincoln County West Virginia, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at home after a brief illness.

He was aself-employed mechanic, a mason and member of the Brooklyn Lodge in Cleveland, Ohio, and was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Smith of Charleston, SC; 2 Daughters: Linda Skeens of Whitesville, WV; Lori Gabbert of Raleigh, NC; 3 Brothers: Carlos Smith of Charleston, WV; Zack Smith of North Olmstead, OH; Gregory Smith of Loraine, OH; 5 Sisters: Arbutus Parsons of Springhill, WV; Doris Saunders of Danville, WV; June Funderburk of Charleston, WV; Judy Kent of Spotsylvania, VA; Brenda George of Follingsbee,  WV; 12 Grandchildren; 2 Great Grandchildren.

Ellen Ann Hudson White, 70 of Charleston, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001 in Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a long illness.

She was formerly of Elkhart, Indiana and York, Pennsylvania. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband Carlos White and mother, Beulah Hudson.

She is survived by her: 2 Daughters: Joyce White of Greensboro, NC; Jennifer Lemming of Indianapolis, IN; 2 Sisters: Delma Hudson of Charleston, WV; Doris Hayes of York, PA; 1 Brother: Gary Hudson of Charleston, WV; 2 Grandchildren: Jason King and Monika King.

Fred Edwards, 81 of Alum Creek, died Saturday, July 14, 2001 at home after a long illness.

He was a member of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA,. He was also retired from and a member of the Laborers Local Union #1353. He was the owner-operator of Edwards Grocery at Alum Creek and was a WWII Navy Veteran.

He is survived by his: Wife: Mabel Dunlap Edwards; 2 Sons: Larry of Alum Creek; Jerry of Olmstead Falls, OH; 2 Daughters: Glenna Chapman of Alum Creek; Pamela McCormick of Wheeling; 1 Brother: Robert Edwards of Alum Creek; 7 Grandchildren: Elisa Edwards, Heidi Belleau, Cindy Orr, Jarrod Chapman, Shani Thomas, Brandon McCormick, & Gerri Lynn Edwards; 3 Great Grandchildren: Caitlin Orr, Nathanael Thomas, & Hannah Thomas.

Services will be 1:00 PM Monday, July 16, 2001 at the McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Roe Smith Officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park at Alum Creek . Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Sunday at the Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Spring Hill and a Navy veteran of WWII.

Bobby L. Webb, 42 of Alum Creek, died Monday, July 9, 2001 at home after a short illness.
He was an employee of the Kanawha County Board of Education for 21 years at Kenna Elementary as a custodian. He was the son of the late Walter and Mable Webb and was also preceded in death by his brother, Mike Webb.

He is survived by his: Wife: Debbie Hess Webb; 1 Step-Daughter: Aleshia Boardman of Alum Creek; 1 Step-Son: Joseph Boardman of Alum Creek; 6 Brothers: Richard and wife, Helen Webb of Charleston; James F. Webb of Maryland; Foster and wife, Nancy Webb of South Charleston; Cecil Webb of Junction City, KS; Gifford Webb of Mason County; Kenneth Webb of West Hamlin; 2 Sisters: Betty Means and husband, Bobby of Sumerco; Jean Schronce and husband, Gordon of Hamlin.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, July 12, 2001 at 2 PM with Pastor Lloyd Humphreys and Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial will be held in Means Webb Cemetery, Sumerco. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Robert B. “Bob” Ballard, 86 of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at Valley Health Village in South Charleston after a short illness.

He was a retired utility foreman for Union Carbide, South Charleston with 42 years service. He was a 1934 graduate of Washington District High School, Alum Creek.

He also was a born again Christian and had attended Alum Creek Nazarene Church.

He is survived by his: 1 Daughter: Brenda Griffith of South Charleston; 1 Sister: Naomi Griffith of Victoria, TX; 3 Grandchildren: Alan Griffith of Lewisville, NC; Brenda Myers of St Albans; Robert B. Griffith of Alum Creek.

Services will be 1:00 PM on Friday, July 6, 2001 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
