Howard Carter Barker

Howard Carter Barker, 100, of St. Albans, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 16, 2003.

He was born November 8, 1902, the son of William and Brook Barker of Curry, Logan County.

He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, St. Albans. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather who touched the lives of many people and loved God and his family more than anything. He is known locally for the huge garden that he tended each year until he was 96 years old.

He sang in the choir at Hansford Senior Center for many years. In younger days, he sang in gospel quartets, worked in the mines, worked for the railroad, was a salesman for Lantz Lumber Company, and was a house designer and builder.

He celebrated his 100th birthday at Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he had been recuperating from a broken hip.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Opal F. Barker, his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Robert J. an Peg Barker of Kinston, NC; his daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and J.V. Byrnside of St. Albans; daughter, Betty J. Hornoff of Warwick, RI; daughter and son-in-law, Marcella “Peggy” and Ross Spurlock of St. Albans; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia “Patti” and J. Allen Ruebush of Hurricane; sister, Sadie Smith of Chapmanville; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2003 at 1:00 PM at Trinity Baptist Church, St. Albans, with the Rev. Allen Stewart and Rev. Bob Barker officiating. Burial will be held in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Howard to Trinity Baptist Church, 2031 Harrison Avenue, St. Albans, West Virginia 25177.

Robert G. “Hoppy” Williams of Charleston, formerly of Alum Creek died Wednesday, February 12, 2003.

He had attended the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Concrete Designs Inc., James Kidd owner, and also worked for Larry Hensley Roofing Company.

He is survived by: 2 Sisters: Betty Stephenson of Charleston, WV Dora Parsons of Tornado, WV; 2 Brothers: Harvey Williams of Myrtle Beach, SC Lawrence Williams of Emmons, WV Carl Williams of Charleston, WV; Several nieces and nephews, one great niece and many friends.

Service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Williams-Cobb Family Cemetery, Sod. Friends may ca117 to 9 PM Monday, February 17, 2003 at the funeral home.

Pauline Una Brown Terry, 80, of Lima, Ohio formerly of Olcott, W V, died Monday, February 10, 2003 at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home, Lima Ohio.

Tammy Lynn Thompson, 31, Brounland Road, Alum Creek, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 as a result of an accident on Rt. 119 S. near the McCorkle Road exit.

Larry Keith Ramsey

Larry Keith Ramsey, 57, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at home after a short illness.

He was a member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by his parents P. J. “Jack” and Grace Ramsey. He helped many in the community any way he could especially the senior citizens, he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by 2 Aunts: Dorothy Merryman of Hopewell, VA Betty Toney of Bridgeville, PA.

Service will be Sunday, February 9, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Robert “Butch” Leadman officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek. Friends may call 1 hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Irene “Jo” Graley, 81, of Marietta, Ohio, formerly of Loudendale, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, February 2, 2003 at the Marietta Center after a long illness.

She was a member of the Loudendale Free Will Baptist Church and attended the Willow Island Baptist Church in St. Mary’s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Graley.

She is survived by her: 3 Daughters: Bazbaza Jones of Bedford, VA; Margie Gump of Akron, OH; Sue Casto of Waverly, WV; 4 Grandchildren: Randy Jones, Cheryl Quick, April Smith, and Becki Simers; 7 Great Grandchildren; 1 Great Great Grandson.

Services will be held at the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, McCorkle on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Harold Burton Hall and Pastor Dana Locke officiating. Dennis Addison Pauley, 76 of Tango, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 1, 2003 at CAMC Memorial Division after a short illness.

He was a retired crane operator with the NOE local 132, a member of the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 at Alum Creek, a Navy veteran of W WII, and a member of Joes Creek Baptist Church, Tango.

He is survived by his: Wife: Betty Lou; Sons: Rexford Pauley and wife, Brenda of Sod; Tom Pauley and wife, Judy of Richmond, VA; Daughter: Denise Duncan and husband, Jerry of Hamlin; Brother: Donald Pauley and wife, Anna Mae of Dunbar; Sisters: Joann Galford and husband, Andy of Hamlin Ruth Lawson of Hamlin ; 8 Grandchildren: Melissa McClure, Rexanna Fitzwater, Rex Pauley, II, Jeremy Mitchell, Hope Hunting, Josh Duncan, Casey Cook and Chris Garrison; 8 Great Grandchildren: Rachael and Jacob Fitzwater, Summer Adkins, R J and Justin Pauley, Blayke Cyfers, Nathaniel Hunting and Connor Hunting.

Nona Mae Woodrum, 68 of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, January 31, 2003 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston, after a long illness.

She was born May 2, 1934 to Harvey and Grace Quintrell. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Doris and Forrest Quintrell; a sister, Bertha Dunlap and a great-granddaughter Katelyn Gillenwater. Nona attended Sumerco Church of God, was a homemaker, a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her: Husband: Hassel; 2 Daughters and Son-in-law: Jean and Danny Gillenwater of Tornado Rita Gillenwater and companion, Tom Smith of St. Albans; 1 Son and daughter-in-law: Brian and Lori Woodrum of Sod; 3 Brothers and Sisters-in-laws: Tommy and Judy Quintrell, Dewey and Mary Ann Quintrell all of Sumerco Vernon and Brenda Quintrell of Hamlin; 2 Sisters and Brothers-in-law: Zola and Thurman Wright and Eva and Benny Gillenwater all of Sumerco; 4 Grandchildren: Chris Gillenwater and wife Kara, Monica Gillenwater and fiance’ Chris, Heather Huffman and husband Chad, and Elizabeth Grace Woodrum, soon to be born; 3 Great-Granddaughters: Kaylee Gillenwater, Jenna Gillenwater and Chloe Huffman.

Irene Hitchcock Gragg Burdette, 80 of South Charleston, went to be an angel on Thursday, January 30, 2003 from her home.

She was a member of Trinity Independent Baptist Church, South Charleston.
She is survived by her five daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Pauley and her husband, Jim, and Kathy Arnold and her husband, Jim all of Ruth; Sue Hitchcock and Sandra Huffinan and her husband, Kenneth, all of Charleston; Bonnie Johnston and her husband, Steve of Piney Flats, Tennessee; 10 grandchildren, Robert Pauley, Debbie Thaxton, Jessie, Angelina, Amy, Lori, Chris and Matthew Johnston, Beth King and Jimmy Arnold; five great grandchildren, Deanna Pauley, Katie and Andrew Thaxton, Brandi and David King.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be held in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends may call on Friday, January 31, 2003 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
