Jerry Delain Adkins

Jerry Delain Adkins, 52, of Alkol, born January 22, 1953, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 12, 2005, as a result of an injury received on April 1, 2003.  He had gone through a lot with his injury but never gave up.  He decided to go home with the Lord to see his mom Hazel Ruth Smith Adkins again.

He had thirty years with Peabody Coal Company in Prenter, WV, and was a member of the UMWA Local 6426 District 17.  He was a Christian and attended several area churches.

He will be greatly missed by:

Father: Charles Frank Adkins of Alkol; three children: Scottie Delain Adkins, Stacey Ron Adkins, and Jennifer Adkins, all of Alkol; two grandchildren: Shanelle Elaine Adkins and Caleb Delain Adkins; two brothers: Larry Charles Adkins and Gary Dwight Adkins, both of Alkol; sister: BRenda Gail Adkins of Alkol; ex-wife and caregiver: Peggy Adkins of Alkol, who cared for him for the past two years; five nephews and three nieces; one brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law, all of Alkol.

Special thanks goes out to Lonnie Vannater, Cathy Smith, and to a very special person who gave him a great bundle of joy in his last five weeks, Samantha Browning.

Service will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 16, 205 at Left Fork Baptist Church with Pastors Randall Kinder and K.D. Bragg officiating.  Burial will be at Bear Branch Cemetery, Spurlocksville.  Friends may call Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.

Nora Weddington Saul

Nora Weddington Saul, 82, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 10, 2005 at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation in Dunbar after a long illness.

She is preceded in death by her son David Weddington, and husband Dorsey Saul.

She was the owner and operator of Lincoln Lunch Restaurant, Alum Creek and a member of Amy Baptist Church, Yawkey.

Nora is survived by:

Daughter: Gail Stamper and husband Bill, of Jacksonville, FL; son: Larry Weddington and wife Genie, of South Charleston; step-daughter: Nancy Pauley and husband Larry, of Sod; step-son: David Saul and wife, Diana of South Charleston; sister: Evelyn Gurski of Alum Creek; twelve grandchildren: Jane Neal; Erick Dingess; Sarah Ryan; Josh and Rebekah Weddington; Megan David and Logan Williams; Josh and Jonathan Workman; Rusty Weddington and Merri Pauley; step-grandchildren: Craig and Bruce Pauley; Tia and Lindsay Saul; five great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3:00 PM Monday, February 14, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastors Robert Leadman and Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be held in Orchard Hill Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the funeral home.

Hyla May Marker

Hyla May Marker, 90, of Sod went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 10, 2005 at the home of her daughter, Areta Gunnoe of Sod after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Thomas Ray Marker; brothers: Daner, Denver, and Dewell Brogan.

We loved our mom very much and she will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She is survived by:

Sons: Garcie and wife Geraldine, of Charleston; Jackie and wife Geraldine, of Sumerco; Jerry and wife Peggy, of Sod; daughters: Audella Huffman and husband Danny of South Charleston; Areta Gunnoe of Sod; three sisters: Macel Mears and Myrtle Dunning, both of Chesapeake, VA; Melba Painter of Canton, Ohio; brother: Deskar Brogan of Beckley; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to all who helped with their mom’s care, especially Sue Dunlap.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 13, 2005 at Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Sod, with Pastors Mike Kordusky and Daniel Reedy officiating.  Burial will be held at Lively Cemetery in Sod.  Friends may call Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.

James W. (Jimmy) Smith

James W. (Jimmy) Smith, 64, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 10, 2005 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness.  Jimmy was retired from Douglas Barriel of Cross Lanes, a former employee of Stork Bakery of Charleston, and was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church.

He was survived by his wife: Shirley; two sons: Anthony of Alum Creek; Terry of Parkersburg; four brothers: Tommy of Scott Depot; William “Cookie” of Winfield; Robert “Bobby” of Culloden; Gary of Springfield, OH; one sister: Becky Cain of Charleston; five grandchildren: Justin Jessica, Dakota, Makayla, and Kevin.

Services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Rev. Shawn Pauley officiating.  Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Arlow Lee Price, Jr.

Arlow Lee Price, Jr., (Duke), 51 of Olcott, died at home Thursday, February 10, 2005 after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Arlow and Vonda Price; granddaughter: Makayla N. Truman.

He was a retired welder from Union Carbide, a former employee of Kanawha Manufacturing and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He is survived by: wife Kathy; seven children: Amy Jones, Trudy Truman, Joe Truman, Jr., Lucas Truman, Brandi Price, David Price, Katie Price; two sisters: Carol King and Shirley Alexander; thirteen grandchildren: Jasmyne, Alexus, Cheyenne, Steven, Adam, Kirsten, James, Codey, Kasandra Joe, Lucas Jr., Zion, Melinda, and Isaiah; four nephews: James, B.J., Raymond, and Michael.

Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, February 13, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Henry Johnson and Reverends Jeff Brown and Jimmy Webb officiating.  Burial will be in the Floral Hills Gardens of Memories in Sissonville with military graveside rites by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768.  Friends may call from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

William “Bill” Thaxton

William “Bill” Thaxton, 83, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty.

Bill was a former employee of Gravely Tractor in Dunbar and also worked at Goldfarb Electric in Charleston.  He was a member of Crooked Creek Church of God for over 50 years, where he served as a deacon.

He is survived by his daughter: Bonnie Stewart; sons: Randy and wife, Kathi; Mark and wife, Louise, all of South Charleston; step-son: Harold Kuhn; Grandsons: Robbie Stewart and wife, Leslie; Jason Stewart; Stevie Thaxton; Jeff Reed; granddaughters: Tina Hill and husband, Christian; Jennifer Thaxton, all of South Charleston.

The family would like to give a special thanks to caregiver Pam Phillips and the family and friends that helped with his care.

Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, February 12, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastors Ezra Graley and David Mitchell officiating.  Burial will be held at Thaxton Family Cemetery, South Charleston.  Friends may call on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Vance O. McClure

Vance O. McClure, 73, of Alum Creek died Friday, January 28, 2005 at the VA Regional Medical Center, Huntington, after a long illness.

He was an army veteran of the Korean War, a retired roofer, and a member of the McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his three sons: Mark, Greg, and Kevin; and caregiver Jane.

Service will be Sunday, January 30, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Roe Smith officiating.  Burial will be at Lively Cemetery in Sod.  Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Mary E. Sansom

Mary E. Sansom, 58, of Sod went home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 20, 2005 at CAMC Memorial Division after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Taylor; sister, Peggy Gardner Sloan.

She is survived by her loving family:

Husband: Basil Ray Sansom; two daughters: Julie Barnett, Connie Briles and husband Eric; two sons: David and wife Missy Sansom; Jerry and wife Stephanie Sansom, all of Sod, WV.  Most previous to her life were her grandbabies: Matt, Josh, Ashley, E.J., and baby, Jessica.  She is also survived by sisters: Pat Clark and husband Ed, of St. Albans; Vicky (Gardner) Varner and husband Doug, of Charleston; Evelyn Sweeney and husband Bobby, of Belle; brother: Lee Gardner and wife Birdie, of CA; and many nieces and nephews.

Being the ultimate wife, mother, and mamaw, Mary will be greatly missed today and forever.

Norma Lea Kingrey Humphrey

Norma Lea Kingrey Humphry, 77, of Yawkey, departed this life on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

She had been a Christian since the age of ten, and was a member of Amy Baptist Church, Yawkey, where she served as a pianist for thirty-eight years.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; sisters: Nona Linville, Nina Adams, Martha Hill, Gladys Hamm; brother, Glen Kingrey.

She is survived by her brother, Dell Kingrey of Alum Creek, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, January 21, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastors Forrest Curry and Robert Leadman officiating.  Burial will be held at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Friends may call on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Maza Cooper Abbott

Maza Cooper Abbott, 83, of Alum Creek went to Heaven to meet Jesus and to be reunited with her husband, Kenneth Abbot on Monday, January 17, 2005 at home.

Seventeen brothers and sisters preceded her in death, Maza being the last surviving sibling born to James and Opal Cooper.

She was a Christian and a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her son: David L. Abbott of Alum Creek; one daughter: Charlottee A. Early of Cross Lanes; five grandchildren: Danielle Thompson, Christina Hughes, Chasity Sigmon, Amanda Allen, Kenneth Abbott, and seven great-grandchildren.

Services wil be held 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 20, 2005 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey.  Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home.
