Tracy S. Huffman 59 of Charleston died Saturday, October 24, 2009 at CAMC General after a long  illness.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Judy

Children and sons in law: Tracy, Neisha (Jason), Joshua, Christine (Turley), Jennifer (Nathaniel)

Brothers: Jerry, James & Denver

Sister: Melba

Services will be 4:00 PM on Tuesday, Oct 27, at the Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Rd., Alum Creek, with Pastor William Carter officiating.  Burial will be in the French Cemetery in Charleston. Friends may gather 1 hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family request contributions be made toward the funeral services.

Margaret E. Newcomer

Margaret E. Newcomer, 83, of Hamlin died Friday, October 23, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith.

Friends will gather at Margaret’s home, 363 Tango Road, after 4:00 pm Monday.

Charles C. Harper

Charles C. Harper, 69, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord,  Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.  He was a  member of McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church where he served as Assistant Sunday School teacher.  He was retired from Hobet Mining & served in the US Army.

He is survived by:

Services will be 2:00pm, Saturday, October 24, 2009, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV, with Pastors Russell Wright and Roe Smith officiating.  Burial will be in  Lively Cemetery, Sod, with Military Graveside Rites by Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 of Alum Creek.   Friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Leon Valentino “Jack” Dunlap, 83, of St. Albans passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston after a five month struggle with Mesothelioma.

Jack was born September 20, 1926 in St. Albans to the late Ora and Emma Jane Cox Dunlap, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Arnold, Barney, Albert and Woodrow; sisters, Orpha, Cleo, Dorothy and Sue.

He will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years, Ruby; daughter, Sharon J. Wood of Charlotte, North Carolina; son, Gregory Leon Dunlap of St. Albans; daughter & son-in-law, Constance and John DeRito of Charleston; along with his granddaughters, Kara DeRito of Charleston and Lia DeRito of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,  He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Margie Louise and Dale Raines of Sarasota, Florida.

He was an employee of Goodrich Gulf in the 50’s and later operated a Texaco, Gulf and Exxon service stations in St. Albans.  He loved golfing with his buddies, competing many times in the West Virginia State Lefthanders golf championship, gardening and working around the house keeping it in excellent shape.

Jack was a United States Navy Veteran of WWII serving with the Sea-Bees in 1945 and 1946 stationed at Pearl Harbor.  He dedicated his life to the Lord, July 7, 1996 at Highlawn Baptist Church of St. Albans where he served on the Board of Trustees using his skills on various projects at the church as well as faithfully attending services every week.

Jack’s journey to heaven to join the angels of life is now complete, daddy you will always be in our hearts and never forgotten.

A tribute to Jack’s life will be 11:00 am Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans with pastor, Rev. Mark Stauffer officiating.  Burial with military graveside rites will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.  Friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Friday at the Highlawn Baptist Church.

Nona E. Thompson

Nona E. Thompson, 91 of Alkol, died Monday October 19, 2009 at CAMC General surrounded by family members.

She was the last surviving child of John (Squire) & Lucy Stone Thompson. She was a 1938 graduate of Duval High School and retired from the Lincoln County Board of Education where she was a cook at Woodville Grade School from 1965 to 1979,.

She is survived by three nieces:

Sue Thompson Clark of Wooster, OH

Rita Jane Thompson Saul of Alkol

Kathy Hill Breedlove of Yawkey,

One nephew: Terry M. Hill of Alum Creek

She is also survived by a large number of great nieces & nephews, great great nieces & nephews & great great great nieces & nephews.

Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress  Road,  Alum Creek, with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating.  Burial will be in the Stone Family Cemetery at Alkol,.  Friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.

Lewis E. (Lou) Legg

Lewis E. (Lou) Legg, 61, went home to Heaven Friday, October 16, 2009, as a result of an auto accident on Rt. 55, Fenwick, WV.

He was a retired coal miner and owner/operator of Legg’s Heating & Cooling , Ashford.  Lou loved hunting, fishing and  the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by parents: Porter & Berneda Legg; brothers: Carl & Lloyd Legg.

He was a loving husband, father & grandfather and  will be greatly missed by his family.

He is survived by:

Nona J. Shifflett

Nona J. Shifflett, 77 of Sumerco, went home to the Lord Saturday, October 10, 2009 at CAMC Memorial after a short illness.

She was born on October 8, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Edith and William”Obra” Spangler, also preceding her in death is her son Mark; sister, Nancy; her brother, William and her grand-daughter, Julie.

She greatly enjoyed and loved her family and  was a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ.

She is survived by her: husband: Hezekiah, son Rick of Sumerco, daughters Debbie Wyant and husband David of Wheeling, and Nancy Lewis and husband John of Charleston, grandchildren, Jason McCallister, Jennifer Korngiver, Alicia Carr, Karsha Shifflett and William Shifflett and six great- grandchildren, brother Harold Spangler of Orlando, Florida and sister Mary Lou Hamilton of St. Albans.

A private funeral service will be held Tuesday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Minister Justin Imel officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey.

Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm on Monday at the funeral home.

Ruby E. Holstine

Ruby E. Holstine, 87 of Nitro, formerly of Emmons went home to the Lord Monday, October 5, 2009 at the home of her daughter Vivian Holstine.

She was born July 7, 1922 to the late William and Rosa Dawkins Boggess. She was  preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Holstine, to whom she was married  60 years;  daughter, Patty Holestine Didonato,  who passed away June 7, 2008; grandson, Timothy Holstine; and  brothers. Clyde, William, Robert, Claude & Harry Boggess.

Ruby is survived by her children, William (Caroline) Holstine of Emmons, Floyd (Mary) Holstine of Nitro, Lovell (Frankie) Holstine of Emmons, Rachael Holstine of Nitro, Charles Holstine of Emmons, Vivian Holstine of Nitro, Teddy Holstine of Emmons and loyal pet Phoebe, 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and several great- great grandchildren.

Service will be 11:00 am Thursday October 8, at Emmons Church of God at Emmons with Pastor Danny Kinder officiating. Burial will be at Barker Cemetery in Ashford. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Curry Funeral Home at 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek.

A very special thank you to all the hospice care workers who helped take wonderful care of Ruby during her last several month.  Another special thank you to “Jimmy” for taking extra loving are of “Mamaw”.

Paul D. Roberts

Paul D. Roberts, 93, of South Charleston, died peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV.

Mr. Roberts was born February 19, 1916 in Kanawha County, WV. He was a 1934 graduate of Washington District High School.

Paul Roberts retired from DuPont as a production foreman with 40 years service. He served as a committeeman for the WV Extension Service and was with Farm Home Administration for 20 years. He was a member of Humpreys United Methodist Church, Tornado; a 60 year member of Masonic Lodge #58, St. Albans, as well as a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite Body of Charleston for 50 years. He was master of Washington Grange for 5 years and a member of the WVA Beekeepers Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Julia Harold Roberts and a grandson James Whitlock.

He is survived by four daughters:

Phyllis (Conrad) Fitzwater, South Charleston, WV

Mary Roberts, Mt. Juliet, TN

Judy (Greg) Dilger, Venice, FL

Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Chaleston, with Masonic Graveside rites conducted by St. Albans Masonic Lodge 58. Friends and family may gather on Tuesday, October 6th from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Curry Funeral Home, 2090 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV.

Rabon “Jerry” Holstein

Rabon “Jerry” Holstein, 72, passed away on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009.

Jerry was married to the late Rita “Snookie” (nee Stewart) for over 43 years.  He was the beloved father of Veronica (Philip) Gwiazdowski and adored grandfather of Cory, Cassandra and Courtney  Gwiazdowski.   Brother to Douglas and the late Stella in Ohio; Ed, Norlene and Micky in West Virginia; and the late Milton in Maryland.

Jerry was born in Emmons, West Virginia on September 2, 1937 and lived in the Cleveland area for over 44 years and will return home to rest.

The family  received  friends from 2-6 pm  Sunday, October 4, 2009 at the Bican Bros. Funeral Home, 5215 Fleet Ave., Cleveland, OH.  Visitation will also be held from 4-8 pm  Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV.  Funeral service will be 11:00 am Wednesday, October  7, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Arthur Hensley officiating.   Jerry will be laid to rest at Holstein Cemetery, Dartmont.

He is loved dearly and will be missed by many.

Rita Holstein passed away on June 9, 2009.  Her cremains will also be present at both visitations and will be laid to rest in West Virginia on October 7, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made in Jerry’s memory to The Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 East 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119 .
