Lillian Mae (Samples) Thomas, 77, of Alum Creek, WV passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

She was born in Alum Creek on August 28, 1933 to the late Hallie and Rushie Samples. She worked at the Alum Creek Post Office for 30 years, where she met and talked to many friends thru the years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Thomas; sister, Juanita Cobb; brother, Marvin Samples and sister, Irene Robinson.

She is survived by her brother, Erman Samples and wife, Judy; Sister, Louise Robinson; Step-daughter, Emogene Mickles and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. Robert Leadman officiating. She will be laid to rest at Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek. The family will receive friends, 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the staff at Oak Ridge Center for the care they gave her and thanks to Hubbard Hospice House and all the love and care they gave her in her last days. A special thanks to her niece, Karen Torman, for her help, love and care during her time of need.

Lillian loved the Lord and tried to be in His house as often as she could.

Carrie Lee Pauley

Carrie Lee Pauley, 88, entered into eternal rest January 22, 2011 at Heart of Georgia Hospice in Perry, GA, after an extended illness. Mrs. Pauley, daughter of Willard and Charlotte Bell McCallister, was born July 23, 1922 in Sod, WV, and is preceded in death by six brothers, six sisters, and her loving husband of fifty years, Cleston Hayes Pauley.

She was a devout Christian and dedicated her life to serving the Lord and caring for her church families.

Mrs. Pauley is survived by her children: Kathryn Lee Pauley Shiplett, Charles Hayes Pauley, Karen Faith Pauley Cole & son-in-law Donald Lee Cole; 7 Grandchildren; 15 Great Grandchildren and many loving and caring nieces, nephews, and friends.

Graveside service will be at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 29th, at Lively Cemetery, Sod, WV with Pastor Clarence Hutton officiating. Flowers will be excepted at Curry Funeral Home or memorial donations to Heart of Georgia Inpatient Hospice, 103 Westridge Drive, Warner Robins, GA 31088 or to Happy Hour, (in honor of Charles Pauley) 716 Young Avenue, Warner Robins, GA 31093

Paul “David” Dunlap

Paul “David” Dunlap, 55, of Rabel Mountain passed away Saturday, January 22, 2011 at CAMC Memorial Hospital after a brave battle with cancer.

He was a transportation supervisor with Charleston Newspapers with 32 years of service and he was a Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Bernice Dunlap; and brother, Rusty.

He is survived by special son: Lawrence Lee Moles II; Special grandson: L. J.; Brother, Bill (Gail) Dunlap of South Charleston; Sisters, Carolyn (Charles) Smith and Brenda Dunlap both of St. Albans; Special niece and caregiver: Becky Stevens and a host of other family members and special friends at Charleston Newspapers.

Service will be 11:00 AM Monday, January 24, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the staff on the 4th and 5th floors of CAMC Memorial for their kindness and help.

Virginia Ann Murphy Holstein

Virginia Ann Murphy Holstein, 81, of Ashford went home to be with the Lord Friday, January 21, 2011 at Heartland of Beckley after a long illness.

She was a member of Mahone Chapel Church at Ashford and was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Holstein.

Service will be 2:00 PM Monday, January 24, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Fairley McCormick officiating. Burial will be in Holstein Cemetery, Dartmont. Friends may gather 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Paul Eugene Zirkle

Paul Eugene Zirkle, 83, of Sumerco, Lincoln County, born April 3, 1927 in Brounland, Kanawha County, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, with complications of Alzheimer’s and cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John N. And Gladys Taylor Zirkle; grandparents, Charlie and Cora Mae Pauley Taylor of Brounland, who raised him; step-mother, Marie Zirkle.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years as of Dec. 31, 2010, Mayme Keeling Zirkle, and in that union they had two sons, Timothy Eugene of Houston, TX and Mark Anthony of Sumerco.

Also survived by one sister, Joyce Bailey of Alum Creek and her children, Butch Zirkle of Louisiana, Ronnie Bailey of Roane Co., Anita Parrish of Elkview and David Bailey of South Carolina. Step-sister, Jean Nunn of Parkersburg and her children.

Paul served in the U.S. Navy during WWII for 1 ½ years; worked at FMC and then enlisted once again for 4 years during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954. Once discharged he went back to work as a machinist for FMC and retired after 37 years. While employed by FMC he was involved in the UMW and Steel Workers Unions until retirement; while in the union he served as a representative for the company. He was also the president of the SOAR until his illness forced him to retire. He was a lifetime member of the Benny Padella VFW Post 4768 of Alum Creek, where he served two terms as Commander. Paul was a Christian; and avid sportsman, who loved fishing and hunting in the WV mountains. He enjoyed bowling and participated in several leagues in the Kanawha Valley.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Lively Cemetery Sod. with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768. Family and friends will gather 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

 In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25312.

Burtchel “Pete” Dunlap

Burtchel “Pete” Dunlap, 73, of McCorkle went home to the Lord, Saturday, January 15, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jennie Angel Dunlap, four brothers and 2 sisters.

He was retired from E.E. Moore Construction, a member of the AFL-CIO and was a Christian.

Pete is survived by his wife of 51 years Evelyn, sons, Jackie Dunlap and Cecil Rhodes, daughters, Dawn Rita Paulsen and Candy Jo Workman and 1 grand-daughter, Courtney Dunlap.

Service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday January 18, at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Russell Wright officiating. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family request contributions toward the funeral services.

Marie Martha Thompson

Marie Martha Thompson, 94, of Alkol passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at home.

She was a postmaster for 32 years at Alkol, attended Sycamore Grove and Beech Grove Baptist Churches. She was a Wave in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Damon P. “Jack” Thompson and brothers, Mancel Miller and Victor “Flib” Miller.

She is survived by her Daughter & husband, Rita and Sam Saul of Alkol; Grandchildren and spouses, Phoebe and Barry Harless of Griffithsville, John and Cammie Saul of Hamlin, Joe and Jamie Saul of Alum Creek; Great grandchildren, Baley, Natalie, Tanner, Brook, Braden, Riley, Mattie and Carolina; Sisters, Dorothy Meadows and Jane Weaver both of McConnellsville, OH, Nadine Dent of Beaver, OH;Brothers, Jimmy Miller of South Charleston, Larry Miller of York, SC.

Victor G. McClure, 67 of Moore, Oklahoma formerly of Alkol, West Virginia went home to Heaven, Wednesday January 5, 2011 at Norman Specialty Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Zadie Breedlove McClure, and brothers, Roger Swammie and Frank Gus McClure.

He was retired from General Motors after 31 years of service.

He is survived by his: son, Victor G. McClure, Jr.; sisters; Sarah Eloise Carthrae and Lois G. La Rue both of Palm Desert, California; brother Carl McClure of Murray, Kentucky; very good friend Karla Griffin of Norman, Oklahoma and grand-daughter Sarah Britton of Lansing, Michigan.

Service will be 12:00 noon Monday, January10, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek, West Virginia with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating. Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens Yawkey. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 Ali Reba Stowers, 87, of Alkol, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at home after a long illness with her family by her side.

She was a devoted homemaker and always wanted everyone to feel welcome in her home. She enjoyed cooking for friends and family. She was a member of Griffithsville Church of Christ. She dearly loved her church and church family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Andrew J. Stowers; parents, Roscoe Dingess Sr., and Mae Dingess.

She is survived by her Daughter: Rhonda Kendall of Cross Lanes; Son, Sam (Gloria) Stowers of Cross Lanes; Grandson, Jonathan Kendall of Louisville, KY; Brother, Roscoe Jr. (Minnie) Dingess of Cincinnati, OH and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express a special “thank you” to her devoted and dedicated caregivers, Kitty Dunlap, Michelle Price, Janet Cooper, Karen Callison, Phyllis Fowler, Sandy Bragg and the late Kay Cummings.

Service will be 1:00 PM Friday, January 7, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Minister Kim Matthews officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Family and friends will gather Thursday from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.
