Olive M. White

Olive M. White, 91, of South Charleston died on Thursday, October 6, at Hubbard Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late Ulysess (Lissie) and Bartola McClure Mccormick of Lincoln County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ephraim H. White; a son, Frederick Alan White; a grandson, Charlie Taylor; a great grandson, Christopher L. Fromal II and all of her 7 siblings.

She graduated from Duval High School in Lincoln County in 1937. She worked and lived in the Charleston area since 1947 when she and her husband operated a grocery store and gas station in Ruth. She later worked for F.W. Woolworth and Montgomery Ward. She retired from Mountain Electronics Co./Midwest in 1985 after 28 years service.

She became a member of the Women of the Moose, Charleston Chapter #317, in 1949, serving as Deputy Grand Regent for WV in 1973-74. She was co-worker of the year in 1988-89 and chairman of the monthly Birthday Party at Marmet Health Center for 17 years. Among other volunteer activities, she was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and volunteered at Ronald McDonald House for 17 years. She was named volunteer of the year for WV in 1988. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 0073. She was a member of the 5th Avenue Church of God in South Charleston since 1989.

She is survived by three daughters, Carol Thompson of South Charleston; Judith Lookabill (Bob) of Spotsylvania, VA and Anita Taylor (Jim) of Ripley. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Greg White, Terri Crowder, Candi Stowers, Joe Lookabill, John H. Thompson, Monita Smith, Jeffery Lookabill, Jimmy Taylor and Paul E. White; 15 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. In addition, she is survived by several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Kenneth Elkins of South Charleston, who was of great help to her in her later years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Olive’s name to Ronald McDonald House, 302 – 30th Street, Charleston, WV 25304.

Visitation at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek will be on Tuesday, October 11, at 12 Noon followed by a service at 1:00 pm officiated by Pastor Frank Chapman. Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Sharon Marie Dent

Sharon Marie Dent, 59, of Alum Creek, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Cabell County, after a complicated ilness stemming from Pyoderma Gangrenosum.

Sherri was born in Charleston, W.Va., on October 5, 1952. She served as a system analyst/computer programmer for the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. After graduating from George Washington High School, Sherri attended Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, Tenn., and graduated from West Virginia State University. She had worked for many years as a programmer in Charlotte, N.C., and was previously employed by the West Virginia Department of Revenue.  She was a member of the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek, where she served as the church clerk for the past 7 years and had been active in the youth department.

She was preceded in death recently by her mother, Janet Lee Priestley Dent, and father Howard Maxwell Dent, Sr. 

Sherri was that special friend who was loved by everyone who knew her. She was always lending a hand to help those around her and had returned to Alum Creek to care for her mother. She was a talented decorator and enjoyed scrap-booking. She loved to travel with family to visit family and friends across the U.S. Sherri left us far too early in life and we are deeply saddened for our loss.

She is survived by brother, Max Dent and his wife Cathy of Winfield; nieces, Julie Marie Sigmon (Jeremy), and Kristin Lee Fridley (Gary); grandnieces, Daka Marie Sigmon and Miley Gail Sigmon; grandnephew, Dylan Maxwell Fridley; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2011, at the Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, 4002 Coal River Road (Route 214 & Coal River Road), Alum Creek, with Pastor Keith George officiating. Reception immediately following.  Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Granvil George Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 506, Alum Creek, WV 25003.

Nellie Faye Kirk

Nellie Faye Kirk, 53, of Alum Creek died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at home after a long illness.

She is survived by her husband, Roger; son, David (Mary) Sharp; daughter,  Ashley Sharp; one granddaughter, Laylee Kirk; five brothers & sisters, Sandi and Sherrie of Chicago, Johnny, Mike and Sonja of the Charleston area, and  many nieces and nephews

Funeral service will be 1:00 M Monday, October 10, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. Michael Graley & Rev. Jimmy Webb officiating. Burial will be in Brounland Cemetery. Family and Friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Pauline H. Oxley

Pauline H. Oxley, 88, of 4908 Midway Road, Yawkey, WV, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the Marmet Center.  She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her Husband: Ersel, and Daughters Debbie Smith and Dottie (Jerry) Lowery, and Sister: Irene Loftis

She is survived by: Sisters: Lucille Israel – Charleston; Ramona Martin – Summersville, WV; Son-in-Law: Jimmy Smith; Grandson: Jamie (Trina) Smith – Yawkey; Granddaughter: Jeri Lyn Lowery – Pennsylvania; Great Grandchildren: Jenna, Emma, Elizabeth and Emily; Great Great Granddaughter: Kinley.

Services will be at 3:00pm on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV, with Pastors Butch Leadman and Butch Loftis officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.


 

Leonard “Gene” McClure

Leonard “Gene” McClure, 83, of Yawkey, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the Hospice House West, South Charleston, following an extended illness.

Gene was born May 9, 1928. He served in the Korean War and retired from Pennzoil after 35 years of service as a welder. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 175. He was a member of the Yawkey Methodist Church, and the Alum Creek Benny Padilla VFW Post #4768.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Roxie McClure and stepfather, Alfie McClure, and step-brother Darrell McClure.Gene is survived by: Wife of 54 years: Lou Ellen Satterfield McClure; Two Daughters: Bridget Chipps (Eugene “Chip”) of Clarksburg, WV; Patricia Vickers (Johnny) of Julian, WV; 4 Grandchildren: Natalie (Jessie) Chipps Williams – Lumberport,WV; Aaron Chipps – Morgantown, WV; Emily and Jonathan Vickers – Julian, WV; Great Granddaughter: Marissa Williams – Lumberport, WV; Sister: Iris Jeanette Boyer – Golden, CO; Special Niece: Pamela (John Rogers) Boyer – Denver, CO; Step Sisters: Mabel and Ruth; Step Brother: David.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV, with Pastors Dave Callison and Butch Loftis officiating.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV, with military graveside rites by Benny Padilla Post #4768.

Frederick Lee Woodrum

Frederick Lee Woodrum, 70 of Alkol went home to the Lord Sunday October 2, 2011 at Hospice West South Charleston.

He was a 1958 graduate of Duval High School, a former truck driver for Appalachian Construction, owner/operator of Woodrums Trading Post, Freddy’s Hot Dog Wagon, Freddy’s Backhoe Service and also operated a sawmill. He had served as a pastor of several Lincoln county church’s.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lorretta, son Aaron Woodrum (Sharon) of Buffalo, grandchildren; Elisha and Cody Woodrum, and brother Doug Woodrum of Georgia.  Also special friends Zelda Ferrell and Ralph Tudor.

It was Freddy’s request that there be no funeral services.

Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek are assisting the Woodrum family with arrangments.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Lorretta.

Wanda Lorraine “Lor-Lor” Hornsby of Sod, born December 5, 1926, went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 30, 2011 at CAMC Memorial Division.

Lorraine was a Christian and a member of McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church. Due to recent illness she was not able to go shopping or to church so she spent many hours watching Fox News and Christian television. Lorraine loved the Lord, her family and also had a great love for children.  Lorraine was a graduate of Duval high School and West Virginia State College. She taught school in Pittsburgh, PA and in various schools in Lincoln County. She loved to read and write down things that spoke to her heart.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Lee Hornsby; parents, Sesco and Esta Dunlap;and  brothers, Damon, Ross and Jerry Dunlap.

Family and friends that already miss her terribly are daughter, Connie (Louie) Runyon: Grandson: Jason (Christine) Runyon: Granddaughter, Jenny (Jeremy) Angel of St. Paris, Ohio: Brother, John (Judy) Dunlap of Sod:Sister, Janet (Herb) Scites of Hurricane: 2 great grandsons, Eli Runyon of Hamlin and Ryan Angel of St. Paris, OH:3 sisters-in-law, Betty Dunlap Cummings of South Charleston, Linda Dunlap of Alum Creek, Phyllis Nunn of Sod: and three special friends, Dusty and Eloise Justice and Freda Dunlap of Sod: several nieces and nephews and many friends from her church and community.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, October 3, 2011 at McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church, Sod, with the Rev. Oshel Bell and Pastor Russell Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

The family extends a special thank you to the many doctors and nurses who cared for Lorraine during her various hospital stays over the past few years, and also to Chris Runyon who helped care for her.

Everette “Doug” Graley

Everette “Doug” Graley, 66, St. Albans passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011 at home after a long illness.   He was freight truck driver; a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 at Alum Creek.

He is survived by his wife: Linda; two daughters: Barbara (Mick) Newell, and Ingrid (Rick) Toler; Step-children, Dawn (Eddie) Lyons, and  Gary (Tonya) Wartenburg; Brother, Harold (Lana) Graley; seven grandchildren, Cheyenne, Dylan, Caleb, Brittany, Ashley, Kayli, and Jaden; great grandson, Bentley.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, September 25, 2011 at Emmons Church of God with Rev. Michael Graley officiating. Burial will follow in Gillispie Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 of Alum Creek. . Family and Friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made toward funeral expenses.

Dennis Taylor

Dennis Paul “Bud” Taylor, 89, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at his home.  He was retired from Cedar Coal Company and was a member of the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. Dennis loved his dogs and enjoyed hunting and being with his grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents Grover and Delphia Taylor, Brother: John, and Sisters: Francis Jones and Lucille (Sis) Harvey.

He is survived by his loving wife Carol Ann of 47 years; three children, Dennis C. Taylor, Denise & Paul Claridades, and Paula & Tim Meadows; six Grandchildren: Brandon McKinney, Anthony, Michael & Luke Claridades, Kursten & Logan Meadows;  four very Special Nieces and Nephews, Louise Jones, Norma Stewart, Faye Chafin, and Paul Harvey.

Services will be at 1:00pm on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park.  Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2011.

Joey A. Stone

Joey Allen Stone, 76, Ridgeview, WV, went home to be with the Lord after a long illness on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Tresie.  He was retired from Southern Appalachian Coal Company.

He is survived by two Daughters: Rosemary (Bill) Payne – Ridgeview and Drema (Chuck) Myers – Ashford; Son, Arthur (Rhonda) Stone – Ashford; Brother, Charles Stone of Emmons; six Grandchildren and nine Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:00pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Charles Hardy and Lee Turley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.   Burial will be at the Barker Cemetery, Ashford.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made toward funeral expenses.
