Martin Noel Tighe, 75, of South Charleston died Thursday, September 5, 2013 after a long illness. He was born December 22, 1937 in Tuam, County Galway, Ireland.

Martin was a member of the Knights of Malta, US Navy veteran, youth minister, a union leader, Board of Directors for the Alum Creek Fire Department, a retired employee of the WV State Department of Environmental Protection and the Kanawha County Commission. His career was dedicated to keeping the creeks and streams of West Virginia pollution free.

He was best known for his love of family, his community, his countries, but mostly his tremendous generosity to others. He was an avid gardner, a sportsman and a never ending entrepreneur.

Martin was preceeded in death by his father and mother, Martin and Anne Tighe; brothers, Charles, Christy and Michael; and niece Anne Marie Tighe.

He will be dearly missed by his wife of 54 years, Katherine Pauley Tighe; daughter, Donna Gail Price (Jack Rice); son, Michael Sean Tighe (Lori Tighe); daughter, Staci Anne Tighe (Terry Moselhy); and two very special grandchildren, Emily Michelle Tighe and Michael Martin Tighe; nephews and niece, Noel, Ivor, and Regina Tighe; their loving aunt, Liz Costello and many other family, friends and neighbors.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, September 10th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Jim Lennox officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.

Kennith Paul McClure, 74, of Bitely, Michigan formerly of Sumerco, West Virginia, passed from this life Tuesday September 3, 2013 in Big Rapids, Michigan after an extended illness.

He was born January 3, 1939 to Okey and Gracie Goode McClure who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his former wife of 28 years Ada Mae, and one sibling, Yvonne Judy Wise.

He was a graduate of Duval High School and a retiree of Ford Motor Company.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Sarah Ann and four children, Joyce Effie (Smoke) Skipper of Rio, West Virginia, Okey Kennith McClure of Baldwin, Michigan, Walter Garland, and Ellen Ethel (Mike) Dotson of Upper Mud River, West Virginia.

Also surviving are three siblings, Betty Ann (Richard) Runyan of Sod, West Virginia, Eddie Joseph (Evelyn) McClure of Adrian, Michigan, Golda Lynn (Butch) Sowards of Hurricane, West Virginia. Five grandchildren, one great grandson, two stepchildren, three step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2:00 pm Saturday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, West Virginia with Rev. Eddie McClure officiating. Burial will follow at the Midkiff Cemetery Sumerco, West Virginia. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday at the funeral home.

 

Robert G. Stitt

Robert G. Stitt, 62, of Charleston died Wednesday, August 28, 2013.

Graveside service with military rites will be 1:00 PM Wednesday September 4, 2013 at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery Dunbar with Pastor Timothy Keely officiating.

There will be no visitation. Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek is assisting the Stitt family.

Bertha Breedlove
Bertha “Josephine” (Vickers) Breedlove, 88, of Alkol was carried by angels to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. She had been in Hubbard Hospice House for one week.

She was born in Seth to the late Ray and Bell (Hale) Vickers on December 31, 1924. She was also preceded in death by her son, Rodney Breedlove; sister, Mark Harvey, and brother, Chester Vickers.

Surviving are her children, Pat (Roger) Holley, David Joey (Star) Breedlove, and Cindy Saul all of Alkol; brothers, Edward (Garnet) Vickers, and Richard Vickers; sisters, Jean Pauley and Carol Matthews; eight grandchildren, Steve (Brianna) Breedlove, Rodney (Angie) Holley, Darren (Mollie) Holley, Leslie Clark, Amanda (Gibby) Gibson, Davey Breeedlove, Marty Saul and Candace (Steve) Kreutzer; nine great grandchildren, David Todd Nunn, Hannah Lilly, Taylor Breedlove, Allen Grimmet, Sarah Holley, Caleb and Noah Gibson, Logan and Landon Holley; and four great great grandchildren.

Granny was a member of Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church and the Church Quilting Ladies, Mission Society and also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She worked hard all of her life and raised her family in a Christian home.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Friday, September 6th, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Jimmy Lawrence and Darrell Searls officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home with the Eastern Star Service at 7:00 pm.

 

Maxine Lawrence
Maxine Delores Hartwell Lawrence, 64, of Griffithsville, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family Sunday, September 1, 2013.

Born July 21, 1949, to Bernard and Blanche Williams Hartwell; she was also preceded in death by brothers, Delmar Hartwell and Sidney Kincaid. She was a 1967 graduate of George Washington High School.

Maxine is survived by her husband of 44 years, Danny Lawrence; brother, Danny Hartwell; daughter, Melissa Smith and husband, Eric; son, Brian Lawrence and wife, Christine; grandchildren, Katelyn, Ethan and Megan Brogan; and step grandchildren, Shelby and Courtney Kidd and Evan Smith.

Funeral service will be 4:00 pm Wednesday, September 4th, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Butch Leadman officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrence Family Cemetery, Griffithsville. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 pm Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank CAMC Memorial Division (third floor MICU), the doctors and staff for the care and compassion shown to her and her family during this difficult time.

Charles Mathew Mallory, 90, of Alkol, WV went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 after a short illness. He was born April 17, 1923, son of the late James Theodore and Malinda Alice Miller Mallory. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife Beulah Hazel Mallory on January 19, 2013, his brothers, Arnold, Londus, Paul, Stanford, Cline and William Mallory; sisters, Thelma Stowers, Ethel Adkins, Runa Schoolcraft and Virginia Berry.

He is survived by his precious sister Martha Mallory Meadows, 91, of Weirton, WV. Surviving children are Ted (Cathy) Mallory of Brook Park, Ohio, David (Patty) Mallory of Alkol, WV and Angie (Randy) Walls of Morrisvale, WV. His eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, Aaron (Darla) Mallory and their children Owen, Rebekah and Aidan; Jason (Tina) Mallory and their children, Josh, Ben, Charlie, and Matthew; Eric (Kelly) Mallory and their children Devin and Austin, Christie (Dave) Dieckman and their children David and Caleb all of Ohio and D.J. (Sandy) Mallory and their children Ethan and Katie of Alkol, WV; Sarah Callahan and her children, Ian, Ella and Eli of Yawkey; Amanda (Roger) Hager of Alum Creek, WV, and Matthew Walls of Morrisvale, WV; two sisters-in-law, Leoma Shafer of Pinch, WV, and Annise Spears of Catlettsburg, KY, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was a member of Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Alkol, a retired carpenter, a member of one of the first graduating classes of Duval High School and a World War II Navy veteran.

Services will be at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastors Darrell Searls and Jimmy Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memorial Gardens at Yawkey with military graveside rites by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. Family and friends will gather for visitation from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Friday, August 30, 2013, at the funeral home.

Edgar A. Rose

Eddie RoseEdgar A. Rose (Eddie), 76 of Largo, FL (formerly of South Charleston & St. Albans, WV) passed away peacefully on August 10, 2013 with his two daughters by his side–Sherri G. Rose of Largo, FL & Trina Rose O’Brien of Westerville, OH. Survivors also include his sisters, Doris Gallione of New York City, Betty Creech of South Charleston, WV and his ex-wife Dawn Rose of St. Petersburg, FL. His grandchildren are Michael O’Brien (Holly), Dawn Marie Furlough (Chris), Brianna Rose Hockman (Matthew), Tessa Thrasher (Ben) and Seth O’Brien. Great grandchildren are Ethan & Annie O’Brien and Meriel & Isaac Furlough. He is also survived by many wonderful friends in Florida, especially his “Plane Crash Brother”, Jaro Paima.
Eddie was a grocer at his family’s store in Alum Creek (Rose Shopping Center) and a real estate broker in St. Albans (Rose Realty). He continued with real estate investments after retiring to Florida. Eddie was a jovial and lively man who lived each day like it was his last. Eddie volunteered with many charitable organizations within his church in Florida. He was also a board member of the Largo Community Center and belonged to the Largo Elks Club.
Eddie loved music and singing throughout his life. As a young teenager, he won a local talent show and was invited to appear on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. He attended Morris Harvey College on a music scholarship. Eddie continued singing in church choirs throughout his life and was also, until his untimely death, sharing his gift of singing to elderly residents at nursing homes in Florida.
A service to celebrate Eddie’s life will be held in the Chapel at Graceland Memorial Park, 100 Graceland Circle, South Charleston, WV, 25309 (304-744-5621) on Saturday, September 7th at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements will be handled by Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV.
Eddie will be truly missed and forever loved by his family and close friends. He was always very positive with a smile on his face and a song in his heart. We know that he is now leading the choir of angels in heaven.

James Ray Pauley

James Ray Pauley, 87, of Alum Creek, WV, son of the late Talmadge and Mayme Pauley passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2013, to join our Heavenly Father and the angels in Heaven where hurt and time no longer matter. He was an excellent provider, husband, father, grand and great-grandparent and friend whom was loved by all that knew him and he touched many lives. Loving him was a privilege but being loved by him was a blessing.

He lived a life devoted to Christ and worthy of the word he taught and loved so much. He brought a smile to every person he crossed. He was a farmer and retired from Local #970 painters union. He was a member of Alum Creek Church of Christ and a strong and loving influence to all our lives and will be sadly missed.

Ray was a member of the Front Porch Gang, which included Danner Green, Charlie Sigman, Olive Banks and with his passing leaving Opal Kitchen as the only living member. He was known throughout the community as the candy man.

He was preceded in death by his brothers: Steve, Edward, Paul, Troy and Bob; Sisters: Berniece, Barb, Olive and Susan.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Elsie Pauley; children, Portia (Bob) Adkins, Deidra Pauley, Todd (Laura) Pauley and grandchidren, Heather (J.R.) Pauley, Kirstin, Erica, BreAnna and Gerrica, great-grandchildren, Kiara, Lil’ Paul, Kaleb Ray, Katie, Gerald Ray, Richard Todd and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and lots of life long friends.

Services will be 2:00pm, Thursday, August 29, 2013, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Ministers Joseph Watts and Charlie McKinney officiating.. Burial will follow at the Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Phillip C. Bowyer

Phillip C. Bowyer

Phillip Cameron Bowyer, 84, of St. Albans, WV went to be with his Heavenly Father Friday, August 23, 2013 at home with his loving wife by his side. He was the best example of a Christian husband, father, brother, son and friend.

He was born on November 20, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan, during the great depression to the the late Frances Cameron Bowyer and Ursla Withrow Bowyer. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James A. Bowyer.

Phil loved serving God and was active at Highlawn Baptist, for over 50 years. He served on the Board of Deacons; Board of Trustee’s and was honored with the award of Usher Emeritus on April 15, 2012 for the many years he ushered. He also worked for many years with church camps, Bible School or where ever needed throughout the church.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School, Hillsboro, WV, where he played varsity Football and Basketball.

Phil was employed by Union Carbide, Insistute, WV with 38 years of service; he was a Sheet Metal Supervisor.

Phil was proud to have served in the US Navy, with 5 years active duty during the Korean War and 23 years in Naval Reserve and Sea Bees. He was a member of St. Albans VFW Post 6418, St. Albans American Legion Post 73 and served as a rifleman at Military Funerals for many years.

Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy; son, Paul Cameron Bowyer (Diane) of Lacey, WA; daughters, Brenda (Jeff) Hughes of Dunbar and Martha Bowyer of St. Albans; sisters, Theresa Bowen of Dayton, OH and Edythe Silman (Jim) of Leitchfield, KY; step sister, Virginia Workman Rose of Ocean Side, CA; foster brother, Roy McCoy (Helen) of FL; foster sisters, Audrey Shifflett Dudley and Ruth Mary Workman Simmons of Marlinton, WV; five grandchildren, JP (Laura) Hughes of Apex, NC, Sarah Hughes of High Point, NC, Russ Bowyer of Lacey, WA, Alyse (Joe) Spears of Olympia, WA and Rebecca Bowyer of Lacey, WA; two great grandchildren, Alayna Spears and Jackson Hughes.

The family wants to thank Golden Living Riverside and Gentiva home health care for the wonderful care they gave him.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, August 28th at Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans, WV with Rev. Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial with Military Graveside Rites will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, WV. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday, August 27th at Highlawn Baptist Church , St. Albans. In lieu flowers, donations may be made to Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., St. Albans, WV 25177.

Wanda Ann Davis

Wanda Ann Davis, 84, of Cross Lanes (formerly of Garretts Bend, WV) passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at home, following a brief illness.

Born 12/30/1928 to Bill and Reba Smith, Wanda graduated from Duval High School in 1945, and later attended nursing school at Morris Harvey College. She was a nurse for over 20 years at Thomas Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church in Garretts Bend for many years, holding various offices and serving as Sunday school teacher for the Ladies Bible Class. Later, she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Tyler Mountain, where she taught a children’s Sunday school class. Her Christian life was an inspiration and blessing to all she met.

Wanda was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary Post #4768, Alum Creek, WV, serving as chairman of several committees. She was deeply involved in community service, not only to benefit Veterans, but anyone in need. Caring for others was Wanda’s calling. No one who fell ill or needed care went without if she were near. She was known as Granny Wanda not only to her own grand and great-grandchildren, but to many others as well, who felt her loving touch and attention.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husbands, John W. Davis, Charles E. Hannah, and James P. Davis, sister, Wanda Jean Neal and grandson, Brian Berkery, as well as a host of close relatives and friends waiting to greet her in heaven.

She is survived by brother, Billy Joe (Louise) Smith, Griffithsville, daughters, Joanna (John) Valleau, Cross Lanes, Debi (Larry) Berkery, Anna Maria Island, FL, Terri (Mike) Del Giudice, South Charleston, Cindy Hannah, Queens Creek, AZ, and Becky (Allen) Wiseman, Red House, and sons, Steve Hannah, Hilliards, PA and Bill (Cathy) Davis, Mason, WV.

Wanda Davis 2She was so proud of her grandchildren: Justin Valleau, Cross Lanes, Lindsay (Brian) Hyden, Cross Lanes, Scott Berkery, Sarasota, FL, Jamie (George) Peyton, of North Carolina, Brandon (Crystal) Del Giudice, South Charleston, Frank Del Giudice, South Charleston, Krista McLaughlin, St. Albans, and Megan Davis, of Georgia. She delighted daily in her relationship with her ten great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00am on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Homer Hensley officiating. Burial will be at Paul Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday, August 23rd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Donations in memory of Wanda Davis, may be made to the churches that were such a blessing to her; Elizabeth Baptist Church, Garretts Bend, WV, or the First Baptist Church of Tyler Mountain, WV, for use in their ministries.
