Shelbie Blankenship
Shelbie Jean Blankenship, 74, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, March 7, 2014 after a brief stay at Kitty Askins Hospice Center, Goldsboro, NC.

She worked most of her life as a caregiver; and for the past four years had made her home and been taken care of by her son and daughter-in-law, T.J. and Teresa Blankenship of Mount Olive, NC.

She is also survived by her granddaughter, Stephanie and Jonathan Moody; sister, Betty McCallister; and Philip and Linda Meikle, who was like a second son. A heartfelt thanks goes to James and Frances Millard for their loving support.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV with Pastor Tony Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.

Dan Stewart, 62, of Charleston, died suddenly Thursday, March 6, 2014 at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was an Independent Contractor for LVL. Dan loved to travel, he loved his many friends and loved to drink coffee.

Dan was preceded in death by his dad, Benjamin Stewart, Jr.; grandparents, Cleve and Icie Gillispie and Benjamin, Sr. and Ida Stewart.

He is survived by companion, Heidi Roub; children, Robbie, Tina (Christian) Hill and Jason (Farrah); mother, Anna Lee Stewart; sister, Drema (Mike) Pauley; grandson, Stanton Hill; step-grandchildren, Christian Hill II, Ayden, Gloria and Brycon; niece, Erica Haak (Jason); nephew, Jody (Beth) Pauley; great nephew, Jackson (JR) Pauley; former wife, Bonnie Stewart; “adopted” son, Scott (Joyce) Kessinger and their daughter, Morgan Danielle and also his dog, Maxwell.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Monday, March 10, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Mark Thaxton and Homer Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 pm Sunday at the funeral home.

The family wants to say a special thank you to his dear friend, Dr. Steve Zekan, his staff and also to his kidney donor Joyce Kessinger. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Curry Funeral Home or CAMC Transplant Center.

Zella GillispieHeaven gained a special lady on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 when  Zella Gillispie, 80, of Alum Creek WV  passed at home surrounded by her family.  She was born on July 1, 1933.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Alum Creek Church of the Nazarene for 42 years.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 61 years, Walter “Bob” ; children, Debbie (Rusty) Hoover, Sharon (Tony) Alford, Patricia (Mike) Peal, Linda (Buck) Harding, Tammy (Tim) Shell, Karen (Chuck) Bennett, Ronnie Gillispie and Shawn Gillispie; brother, Samuel (Bea) Barker, 18 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. David Mitchell and Rev. Mayford Witt officiating. Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery, Ashford. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Saturday at the funeral home.

Frances SummerfieldFrances E. “Gansy” Summerfield, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Oak Ridge Center, Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Jerusa Vickers; husband, William Summerfield; brothers, Harold and Junior and sister, Brookie Breedlove.

She is survived by daughter, Trena (Dave) McKinney; step-son, Larry (Judy) Summerfield and step-daughter, Linda Casto; grandchildren, Tamika, Davy and Camdyn and a few others who referred to her as their grandmother.

Services will be at 2:00pm on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Minister Charles McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Raymond Wayne Hensley, 48, of Beaver, WV, went home to be with the Lord Monday, February 24, 2014 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley, after a long battle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hassel and Leona Hensley.

He is survived by son, Jeremy Hensley; daughter, Brittany Hensley; sisters, Deliah (Brad) Cantrell and Patricia Dawson; three granddaughters and many other family and friends.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Saturday, March 1, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Billy Silva officiating.

 

Burial will follow in Lively Cemetery, Sod. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions toward funeral service.

Patricia Ann Strickland

Patricia StricklandPatricia Ann Strickland 67 of Beckley, born August 17, 1946 in Brookfield, MO and raised in Nebraska and Iowa, went to be with the Lord Monday, February 24, 2014 after a long and numerous illnesses.

She had been a active member of the Riverview Baptist Church in Woodbridge, VA and the Northside Baptist Church in North Charleston, SC. Patricia was a licensed cosmetologist and a meticulous homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her father, Lyle Skelton and mother and stepfather Juanita and Lohman Ettinger, brother, Ronnie Moore who was killed in (Vietman, TET 1968), sisters, Linda Schoening and Barbara Lane.

She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Robert (Bob) Strickland, nephews, Brandon Lilly and Lane Lilly and wife Brandie of Cool Ridge, and Joe Chapman and wife, Sam of Vienna, and Josh Chapman of Cool Ridge, Darrell Lane and wife Donna and their son Jared of Ft. Ashby, Dareld Study and wife Bridgette and family of Bartlett, IA, Martin Study and wife Amy and family of Randolph, IA, James Strickland and wife Mandy and family of Lincoln, NE, and Michael Strickland of Lincoln, NE, Nieces, Trina Petersen and husband Roger of Bartlett, IA, Lanita Chapman of Beaver, Kelly Legg and husband Randy of Mount Lookout / Cool Ridge, and Ric’kell Lusk and husband Cody of Daniels, 6 step-children, 17 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren.

Service will be 2:00 PM Friday, February 28, 2014 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Dan McCormick officiating. Burial will follow at the Proctor Family Cemetery on Little Sandy Road, Elkview.

Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Dinah Sue Hager, 45, of Yawkey, fought a courageous battle and won the race on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at home surrounded by her dedicated family who cared for her.

She was preceded in death by her dad, Rex Cooper and granddaughter Gracie Renee Roberts.

She is survived by her Mom, Sue Cooper; Brothers: Doug and Allen Cooper; sister: Sarah; Children: Andrea (Shannon) Roberts; Andy “Bub” (Satin) Hager; Ashley (Jamie) Banks and Courtney Hager; grandchildren: Gavin and Gabbrielle Roberts and Isaac and Lilibeth Banks.

There are no words to describe what a strong courageous woman, friend, mother and grandmother she was. Her love for her family was truly unconditional.

Services will be 2:00pm on Thursday, February 27th at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Richard Harrold officiating. Burial will follow in Barker Cemetery at Mud River.

Visitation will be two hours prior to service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family request contributions toward funeral services.

Anthony Alan Price, 58, of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord Sunday February 23, 2014 at Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Charleston on May 31, 1955.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henson E. and Beuna L. Price.

Alan was a member of the Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed by the Kroger Company on Delaware Ave., for 32 years and enjoyed his Pepperidge Farms bread route, as of late.

Alan is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Fred. and Anna M. Price of Danville, his very dear girlfriend Wanda Monday of Alum Creek and her son and family Josh and Sarah Monday and their two sons; Luke and Logan who were like grandsons to Alan, nephews Bret and (Kara) Price and their sons, Shane and Cory, Bart and (Stephanie) Price and their children Eric, Rebecca and Taylor, nieces; Allison and (Andy) Clem and their children Jonah and Norah, and Tammy and husband, Divence Moore.

Service will be 1:00 PM Wednesday February 26, at Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church, 2309 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens Yawkey. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.

Mark Alan Madden

Mark Alan Madden, 55, born November 7, 1958, and died Monday, February 17, 2014 of cancer at Charleston Hubbard House. He was a lifelong resident of Alum Creek, WV. He was the son of the late Bobby R. Madden of Alum Creek. He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Alta Madden and brother-in-law, Gavin Whitrock.

He is survived by his wife, Penny (Smith) Madden, two sons, Justin, Orlando, FL and Jordan, St.Albans, WV; mother, Patricia (Peggy) Madden, Alum Creek; brothers: Steve (Debbie) and Jesse (Tammy) Madden, Alum Creek; Sisters: Sandy (Marshall) Pauley, Alum Creek; Connie Whitrock, Denver, CO and Joyce (Rob) Davis, Charleston. Fourteen nieces and nephews, pet cat, Max; and many cousins and friends.

He was a 1977 graduate of Duval High School, attended Marshall University and a former member of the Pipefitters Union Local 625 of Charleston, WV. His hobbies included golfing, fishing and watching the Oakland Raiders football team. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother. He is greatly loved and will be missed by all. Mark was a Christian and looked forward to being received by Christ in his remaining days.

The family would like to thank St. Francis Hospital, Hubbard House and Hospice for excellent and compassionate care for Mark.

Graveside Services at 11:00am Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV, with Minister Richard Runyan officiating.

 

Robert C. (Bob) Knightstep

Robert Knightstep
Robert C. (Bob) Knightstep, 86, of Dunbar died Sunday, February 16, 2014, after a short illness surrounded by his daughters and sons-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty and grandson, Kristopher Kenneth Samples.

He was a Navy veteran of WWII. Bob worked in sales most of his life, helping to build and run radio stations and selling lubricants and chemicals to industrial companies. For the last 20 years his expertise was devoted to the establishment and growth of OCCWV in South Charleston with Robbie and Matt.

Bob was a generous and compassionate person and will be missed by all who knew him.

He leaves behind his daughters, Donna (Ken) Samples and Robbie (Matt) Coleman.

A private graveside service will be Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the Samples’ Family Cemetery, Spring Hill, where he will be laid to rest near his beloved wife and grandson.
