Dennis Lee Jones

Dennis Lee Jones, 65, of Scott Depot, WV passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston, WV.

He was born on May 20, 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Harley and Helen Jones.

Dennis served as a Sergeant in the U. S. Army during Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in action. He was a truck driving hauling mining chemical and hazardous material.

He lived the past 29 years in West Virginia with his loving wife, Wende, and their daughters.  He enjoyed fishing, airbrush artwork, in which he was an award winner, and carpentry.

Dennis is survived by his wife,  Wende; daughters, Briann Jones (Tim Steele) and Katie Jones (Jacob Rhodes) both of Charleston; son, Jeffrey Jones of New York; brothers, Ron Jones (Rose) of Elizabeth, WV, Dallas Jones (Terri) of Amherst, OH and Billy Kivon of North Olmstead, OH; sisters, Linda Lucak (Jeff) of Maple Heights, OH and Helen Toth Kivon of Parma, OH.

It was Dennis’ request there be no services.

The family would like to thank the staff of the ER at Charleston Memorial Hospital, the SICU and the nurses and staff of 5 South for the great care he received.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kanawha HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV  25387.

Anthony MillerWayne Miller

Anthony “Wayne” Miller, 50, of Lincoln County & Charleston, WV passed away Monday, December 21, 2015 after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Wayne was born December 10, 1965 in Lincoln County, WV to Jerry G. Miller and Tootsie G. Miller.

He loved God, his family and the outdoors.  He had an infectious sense of humor, and he thoroughly enjoyed a good laugh.  He worked for over 30 years in the tree trimming industry, built the family home with his own hands.  Wayne helped anyone who asked.  He was one in a million and will be dearly missed.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 29 years, Gena K. Miller; daughter, Sara J. Miller; son, Jared W. Miller; father, Jerry G. Miller; and siblings, Barbara G. Miller and Elizabeth “Beth” Keeling.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 24th, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating.  Burial will follow at the Miller Family Cemetery, Sumerco.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

 

Opal Kitchen

Opal KitchenOpal Kitchen, 90, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 19, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her parents Arch and Chalcie Meikle; husband George; loving daughter Lottie; brothers Delmer and Parker Meikle; sisters Marie Ernest (Listen) and America Green (Danner).

Opal is survived by her brothers Tom Meikle (Audry), Bob Meikle (Lucy); sister Phyllis Debord (Cal); sister-in-law, Anna Mae Meikle; two very special nieces which she considered daughters Jean Adkins (Terry) and Diana Green; her special great nieces and nephews who she considered her grandchildren; Angela Adkins, Hope Fout (Eric); Terry Adkins (Amy), Jerry Adkins along with their children who held a special place in Opal’s heart Matt Orcutt, Hunter McClure, Natalie Fout, Austin and Aubry Adkins, and Emmy Carte. Opal had many other special nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

Opal was one of a kind.  She was a good mother, sister, neighbor, aunt, and friend.  She was loved by all who met her.  She had a way of making people feel special.  If you visited Opal it didn’t matter how long you stayed she wanted you to stay longer.  She was a good listener and she told you her truthful opinion.  She loved the Lord and longed for the day she would be reunited with her daughter Lottie.  She was a member of Fuquay Church of God.  She was the last of the front porch gang which included Olive Banks, Danner Green, Ray Pauley, and Charlie Sigmon. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all of us.

Services will be 2:00pm Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lakhani and his staff for many years of care and the staff at Thomas Memorial during her illness.

 

Oley Leo Pauley

Oley PauleyOley Leo Pauley, 92, of South Charleston, formerly of Lincoln County, went home to be with the Lord Saturday December 19, 2015 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston.

He was a retired construction worker and member of Laborer’s Local #1353. Oley was a Army Veteran of WWII where he received a Purple Heart after being wounded in action in Germany, January 11, 1945. He loved hunting, gardening and the Cincinnati Reds for sure.

Oley was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ruth.

He is survived by daughter, Brenda (Ed) Roberts of Hurricane; sons, Darrell (Suewanee) Pauley of Sod and Freddie (Terri) Pauley of Statesville, NC; 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Dad, this is not goodbye, but we’ll see you later.

Joyce Null Hill

Joyce HillJoyce Null Hill, 79 of Belle, passed away peacefully to go home to be with her children Harry Jr, Alice, Larry and Robert Allen.

Also preceding her in death was her parents Brady and Dorothy Hudson brother Gary and sister Patsy.

Joyce was born December 24, 1935 and passed away Sunday December 13, 2015 at CAMC General. She graduated from South Charleston High School and retired from One Valley Bank.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy K. Kernutt and husband Mike of Oregon, brother and sister by choice: Tommy and Dianna Green of Belle and several nieces and nephews and her aunt Barbara “Bobbie” Parsons.

Graveside service and burial will be 1:00 Thursday December 17, at Forks of Coal Memorial Park Alum Creek with Pastor Mike Kernutt officiating.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 pm Wednesday December 16 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek.

Virginia Marie Holstein

Virginia Marie HolsteinVirginia Marie Holstein, 52, of Alum Creek, known to all who loved her as “Nunny”  went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 11, 2015.

Nunny was a Christian and attended Olcott Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mason and Doris Kirk; nephew, Mason Dale Kirk, who she raised like a son; guardian, Garrett Holstein; and brother, Bubby Holstein.

Nunny is survived by her husband of 36 years, Roger; loving son, Michael; and the apple of her eye, Mayleigh Grace; guardian, Mary Holstein; brother, Mason “Hot Rod” Kirk; sisters, Alpha “Sissy” Kirk, Debbie Lynn Kirk, Lisa (Ronnie) Kirk, Debbie Sue (Mark) Kirk and Chrissy (Marvin) Kirk; niece Joan Meeker, nephews, T. J. Estep and Nick (Stacy) Kirk; and many other great nieces, nephews and family members.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Martha Kirk and Joey Holstein officiating.  Burial will follow at Holstein Cemetery in Dartmont.   The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Martha Kirk, who was there thru it all for Nunny; and also, Dr. James Frame, Nurse Karen and Shawnna Walker.

Nell Marie Moore

Neil MooreNell Marie Moore, 81, of South Charleston died of a long illness on Friday, December 11, 2015 at her home.  She was a devoted wife and loving mother.  She made a wonderful home for her family.  She was an excellent cook and provided hospitality to all who entered her home.  She loved working in her flowers and enjoyed planting over 100 different species of plants in her beautiful yard.  Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.  She will be missed.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Raymond & Verna Legg; brothers, Charles, Raymond, Lewis, Thomas, and Okey Legg and sister, Donna Patterson.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Arley F. Moore; sons: David Moore and his wife, Beth of Columbus, OH and Edward Moore and his wife, Nancy of Lexington, SC; daughters, Donna Moore and Arlene Hudson and her husband, Robert, all of Charleston, WV; grandchildren: Cody Moore and his fiancée, Dominique Martinez; Haley Moore, Heather Gacek, Hannah Gacek and Seth Moore; brothers: Jerry Legg and his wife, Noami, and Bob Legg and his wife June and sister-in-law, Betty Legg.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00AM Monday, December 14, 2015, at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with the Rev. Monsignor Edward Sadie officiating.  Interment will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

 

Daniel Neil Childress

Neil ChildressNeil Childress

Daniel Neil Childress, 66, of St. Albans went to be with the Lord in Heaven on Saturday, December 5, 2015 with his loving wife and family by his side at Select Specialty Care, Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston.

He was born April 30, 1949 to the late James D. and Emma Lee Baker Childress.  He struggled for many years battling diabetes, renal failure and vascular disease.

Neil was a 1967 graduate of Hurricane High School.  He worked in management most of his life with job transfers to Asheville, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida where he resided for 23 years.  He was a devout Christian and a member of Maranatha Fellowship. He drove the church bus in both Asheville and Jacksonville.  Neil touched so many lives being an awesome man of God.  He had such an infectious personality and was loved by so many people.

Also preceding him in death was his son, Derick Lee Childress, with whom he is now rejoicing in heaven.

He is survived by the love of his life, caretaker and wife of 35 years, Donna Goins Childress; brother, Roger (Sharon) Childress; children, Jeramie of Milton, Crystal (Jimmy) Elswick, and Shannon (Austin) Silva all of Middleburg, FL, Sherman “Bubby” Bennett of Culloden and Amethyst Childress, who resides with his wife, Donna, in St. Albans; 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Terry Hogue officiating.  Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.  The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to P.A. June Wilson for her compassionate care of Neil and the family; Pastor Nicole Stewart, as well as, many others for praying, singing to  and supporting our family during this difficult time; and also Zachary Cole and Dave Simmons for their care and support.

 

James E. Harper, Jr.

James Harper, Jr.James Edward Harper, Jr., 74, of Sissonville passed away Friday, December 4, 2015 at home.

He was a 30 year employee of Broughton Dairy and also a member of the Teamsters Local #175.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Goldie Harper; and siblings, Benton, Delores, Thelma and Marie.

He is survived by his son, James E. Harper III; daughters, Kathleen (Ben) Hogue, Melissa (Coy) Payne and Victoria (Robert) Hudson; sisters, Meretha (Harold) White and Charlotte Smith; brother, Deanea Harper and Roger (Shirlene) Harper; six grandchildren, Ben Jr., Amber, Mitchell, Rachel, Andrea and Rebecca; and great granddaughter, Kensley.

Burial will be at  a later date at B.J. Means Memorial Cemetery, South Charleston, WV.
