February 7th, 2019 | Posted by curryfuneralhome in Obituaries

Madora Joan Mitchell, 78 of Yawkey, left her home Thursday, February 7, 2019,  to be with the Lord after battling Alzheimer’s disease for 12 years.  She was a member of Danville Church of Christ and has been a faithful Christian since January 6, 1966.  Joan was a virtuous woman who was of great value to her family, to her church, and to her community.  She was a student of The Word and a great teacher and speaker.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Kermit and Helen Stickler.  She leaves behind her husband of 60 years, Kenneth, sons, Mark (Kelley) of Yawkey, John (Cheryl) of Sparta, NC and Matthew of Yawkey.  Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday February 10, 2019 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with her husband and three sons officiating.  Burial will follow in Hayzlett Cemetery, Garretts Bend.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Saturday at the funeral home.

We cannot express in words our gratitude to our church family, friends and neighbors, especially the David Havey family and Dignity Hospice for all of your prayers, cards, visits, food, help, and the encouragement the past few years in bearing our burden.  You all fulfilled the law of Christ.  Galatians 6:2.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Dignity Hospice, 557 Main Street, Chapmanville, WV 25508.

Kenneth and family, we are so sorry for the loss of your dear wife and mother. Joan was a very special
woman of God and I know you all loved her dearly and cared for her in that manner. John and I didn’t know of her passing until yesterday but we send our deepest love and condolences to all of you. May God put his loving arms around you and give you peace, knowing that she is now at peace with Him. John and Barbara Duty

I rode to business school in Charleston when she worked at the Federal building. She was a wonderful woman who always thought of others. It is so sad to know that she has passed away but happy that she has a new body that is no longer causing her pain and grief.

My heart is sad … Joan was a precious sister-in-Christ! I still treasure the precious notes of encouragement she sent to Willard “Ick” and I when we were at the Danville Church of Christ. Her VBS lessons were so good. She taught such a good Bible Class downstairs at the Danville Church of Christ. And, when Lee & Ernestine Harper were celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary at the Danville Church of Christ, I know she recognized Ick and I, and was able to recall a Ladies Retreat scene. It was only for a brief moment, but it warmed my heart! My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

My deepest sympathy to the entire family. Joan was one of the wisest people I have ever known and the perfect example of a Christian. She will be truly missed by everyone who knew her.
