As I sit and think about Chris Ice, I am still in the midst of stunned disbelief at his passing.
Chris came into my life years ago as an AC/Heating guy. But he became much more than that. He rescued me time and again by working on my air conditioning when it was on the fritz during a blistering heat wave, or taking a look at my furnace when it shut down during sub-freezing winter days. He even did some plumbing when an emergency arose.
The first time he did a job for me he asked if he could put a “Fire and Ice Heating and Cooling” sign…which by the way….was a freaking fantastic name for his business….in my yard for advertising. I said of course he could. That sign was in my yard for months.
Over time we became friends. He would reach out when his Eagles club had something going on, or when his motorcycle group was having one of its charitable events, asking if perhaps they could get a little news coverage to help the cause. I’m happy to say more often than not we made it happen, including the last time a couple of months ago during a poker run to help disadvantaged kids.
He was a strong advocate for motorcyclist rights and worked to make sure bikers’ voices were heard at the state capitol.
Chris was a fierce and loyal protector of those he cared about…his family, friends and customers, along with kids he would never know and the dogs he loved with all of his big heart.
He was loud and funny, sarcastic with a big laugh that erupted often…either when he said something clever or someone else did.
Chris was a special person, giving to a fault and always ready to step in and take care of a problem, no matter the time of day or the weather outside.
He leaves us much, much too soon and my life will be less complete without him.
I’m glad I got to know him. I’m even happier I could call him a friend.
All my best to Angie, his kids and those who loved him. He was a rare breed and the world would be a better place if more were like him.
But today, the world is a little less bright now that he’s gone. I am sad at the thought of never seeing him and laughing with him again.
But I will also smile, with good memories of a good man and better times.
RIP Chris.
You will be remembered and you will be missed.
