Helena Elizabeth Watts Matthews

 Helena Elizabeth Watts Matthews, 92, of Sumerco passed away from this life on Saturday April 9, 2011 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Albert A. and Essie Ross Hill Watts.  She was married for 71 years to the late William Harold Matthews. She had been Christian for 80 years. She was a member of the Church of Christ, Griffithsville, WV. She was a wife, mother and homemaker.

She is survived by two sisters, Edna C. Burns of Sumerco, Alberta McKinney of Sumerco and also by her sister-in-law, Emma Mace Brokaw of Barboursville.  She has three children: Joan Matthews Gerber of Sumerco, Robert S. “Bob” Matthews (Nancy) of Sod, and Kim Matthews (Brenda) of Sumerco;  four grandchildren: Tracy Matthews (Laura) of Sod, Sarah Matthews Dunlap (Chris) of Alum Creek Chastidy Matthews Graham (Billy) of Hamlin and K.K. Matthews (Marsha) of Yawkey; and 10 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a great number of friends and church family.

Out family would like to express our gratitude to the nurses of Hospice for their home care during her final months. Also, we are grateful to Lillie Rakes, Shirley Selby and Donna Bryant for their help in her care.  It has been an honor to be her children and we lovingly surrender her to the arms of our Heavenly Father until we meet again.

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Ministers Charlie McKinney and Don Burns officating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Family and friends will gather Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, we ask that contributions be made to the HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25312-2536.
