Eva Akers Gragg

Eva Akers Gragg, 84 of Scott Depot, formerly of South Charleston, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving children Saturday, February 5, 2011.

She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Virgie Akers of Alum Creek. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray Gragg on February 5, 1984, six siblings, and one great grandchild.

She is survived by one sister Alberta Haga, of Sophia, West Virginia and one brother, Adair Akers of South Charleston.

Also surviving are her children, Jayne Lively Williams and husband, Chambers of Murfreesboro, TN, Robert “Bob” Gragg and wife, Susie of South Charleston, Joyce Pratt Jordan and husband, Joey of Cross Lanes, Ralph Gragg and wife, Debbie of South Charleston, Russell Gragg and wife, Kimberlee, of Boone, North Carolina, Richard Gragg and wife, Robin of Scott Depot, 21 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and special “adopted” son Steve Pauley and wife Rosie of Scott Depot.

She worked many jobs for many years to see that her children were provided for. In her legacy of raising her children, her goodness and wisdom will live on in a love that will always be with us. Her Christian heart was always our guidebook to heaven.

She loved her flower gardens, especially her beautiful, beautiful roses of many colors. She was a very special lady and will be missed by all who knew her. Thank God her soul is resting, thank God for all who loved her, praise God who loved her best.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Ashish Sheth and his staff for their compassionate care of mom over the past ten years, Dr. Haffar and Teresa, Dr. Jogenpally, and the staff on 3rd floor of Thomas Memorial Hospital Medical Pavillion. They treated mom with the kindness, dignity and respect she deserved. Our sincere appreciation to all who visited, called and sent cards and flowers.

We would also like to extend out thanks to everyone at Hospice Home Care, Curry Funeral Home, Graceland Memorial Park for their kindness, understanding and assistance.

Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 8 2011 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Russell Gragg officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 9 pm Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park South Charleston. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the home of Ralph and Debbie Gragg following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. West, Charleston, WV, 25312-2536.

William Harold Matthews

William Harold Matthews, 91, of Sumerco passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long bout with Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was a life-long Christian, an elder in the church and a member of the Church of Christ in Griffithsville, WV. He was a retired pipefitter from Local Union 625. He was also the owner of Matthews’ Store in Sumerco which closed in 1972. He was a teacher for World Bible School for over 26 years. He taught tens of thousands of students about the Lord, through correspondence in Africa, Europe, Asia, South America and in the United States.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Helena Elizabeth Watts Matthews. He is also survived by his sister, Emma Mace Brokaw of Barboursville; two sisters-in-law, Edna C. Burns and Alberta McKinney both of Sumerco;Three children, Joan Matthews Gerber of Sumerco, Robert S. “Bob” Matthews (Nancy) of Sod and Kim Matthews (Brenda) of Sumerco; Four grandchildren, Tracy Matthews (Laura) of Sod, Sarah Matthews Dunlap (Chris) of Alum Creek, Chastidy Matthews Graham (Billy) of Hamlin, K.K. Matthews (Marsha) of Yawkey; 10 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a great number of friends and church family.

It has been an honor to be his children and we lovingly surrender him to the arms of our Heavenly Father until we meet again.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Ministers Charlie McKinney and Tom Racer officiating. Burial will follow in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Family & friends will gather Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.

Edna Leona(Hudson) Peters

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Edna Leona (Hudson) Peters of Florida formerly of Alum Creek went to be with the Lord on February 5, 2011.

She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Dempsey 11:00 AM Saturday at Forks of Coal Cemetery at Alum Creek.

She is survived by her son, Del (Vicki); daughter, Gail (Donald) Caldwell; 6 grandchildren; Joshua, Angel, Heather, Nicholas and Felicia and Amanda; 5 great grandchildren, Rodney, Cheyenne, Xaiver, Ayana and Alexzavier (Jose).

Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Sandra Jean Miles

Sandra Jean Miles, 57, of Griffithsville went to be with the Lord, Friday, February 4, 2011.

She was preceded in death by her son & daughter, Mathew Carter and Christy Lee; brother, Mark Midkiff; and father, Bill Midkiff.

She was a LPN and worked at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, Carter “Skip” Miles; Son, Brent Michael Miles; Grandson, Ryan Matthew Miles; Granddaughter, Jaiden Page Miles; Mother, Gladys Midkiff.

Funeral service will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors David Vickers and Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Fork Cemetery, Griffithsville. Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Bernice E. “Be” Rabel

Bernice E. “Be” Rabel, 84, of South Charleston, WV was released from her earthly bonds on February 3, 2011 while residing at Candlelight Cottage in St. Albans, WV

Be was a graduate of South Charleston High School Class of 1945. She was an avid bowler and had a true gift for gardening. She was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church, and she loved life. She was friend to everyone and dearly loved her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold O. Rabel, her parents, ten siblings and a grandson.

Be is survived by her three children: Patricia Starry, her husband Dale; Michael Rabel, his wife, Nancy; David Rabel and his wife, Debbi; Grandchildren, Debbie & Sean Starry, Melissa Waselovich Linenberger, Shane, Dustin, Kristin & Andrew Rabel.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Candlelight Cottage for their wonderful care of mom.

Bobby R. Clark

Bobby R. Clark, 69, of Sumerco went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a long battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arbutus; and three sisters, Bonnie, Faye and Eldean.

He is survived by his sons, Bobby (Cheryl) Clark of Sumerco, Dale, John and Joey (Wanda) Clark, all of Sumerco and Tommy (Lynn) and Justin Clark, both of Alum Creek; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Bessie Fowler, Melba Saul, Mary Dunlap and Shirley Justice; and brothers, Wilmer, Elmer and Howard Clark.

Service will be 2:00 pm Friday, February 4, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, Sumerco.

Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Carol Lou Smith

Carole Lou Smith, 76, of South Charleston went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Heartland of Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Betty Mallory Smith; sister, Mary Holstein; brothers, Marvin “Doc” and Herby D. Smith; and niece, Dianne Loftus.

She is survived by sister, Regina Loftus and several nieces and nephews

Service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Ben Pauley and Ron Schlak officiating. Burial will follow in Mallory Cemetery, Spring Hill Mountain. Family and friends will gather from 12 to 2:00 pm Saturday .

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made toward the funeral services.
