Mary E. Vickers

Mary E. Vickers, 63, of Yawkey died Friday, June 12, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.    She was owner/operator along with her husband of Berry Insurance Agency at Alum Creek.  She was a member of the Eastern Star at Hamlin.    Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Irene King and brother, Richard King.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Roger; Daughter:  Amy (James) Cooper of Jacksonville, FL; and Grandson: Zach Cooper

Funeral Service will be 11:00 am  Tuesday, June,  16, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with the  Church of Jesus Christ – Latter Day Saints officiating.  Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey,   Friends  may gather Monday from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home with an Eastern Star Service at 7:00 pm.    In lieu of flowers the  family suggests donations be made to the American Heart Association, West Virginia Region, PO Box 12110, Charleston, WV 25302.

Colin “Kelly” James, 65, of Olcott passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009 after a long illness.    He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Reba James, and brother Jerry James.   He was a former employee of Sears and was a Air Force veteran.

Kelly is survived by his beloved dog, Lucy;   sisters, Donna Parsons of Ashford, and Rita Mustell of Alum Creek, brothers Robert James of Gleason, Tennessee and Dennis James of Chicago, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.   A memorial service will be held at 6:30 PM Thursday, June 11, 2009 at the Olcott Church of God with Pastor Mike Graley officiating.

Walter E. Dunlap

Walter E. Dunlap, 67, of Garretts Bend, Sod, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, June 5, 2009 after a long courageous battle with cancer surrounded by family and friends.   He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church of Garretts Bend where he served as Senior Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. Walter was tenor singer with the Canaan Land Quartet for Many years. He was a 1959 graduate of Duval High School. He retired in 1995 from the Painters Union as a drywall finisher. He loved the outdoors and was a successful deer and turkey hunter.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amy Dunlap, parents Lonnie and Beedie Dunlap, one brother Billy Dunlap, four sisters Maxine Keeling, Carolyn Lawrence, Genieve Nunn and Mildred Lee.   He is survived by his loving wife of 49 ½ years Joyce, daughter Lisa Pauley (Allen) of Cobbs Creek, two sons Kevin Dunlap (Lisa) of Cobbs Creek,  and Greg Dunlap (Sherry) of Garretts Bend. Two granddaughters Tina Pauley, Brittany Dunlap, one step granddaughter Lorna, two grandsons Jacob Dunlap and Andrew Pauley, two step grandsons Michael and Paul. Four sisters  Ann Fowler of Julian, Linda Jones of St. Albans, Margie Basham of Hurricane, and Karen Vickers of Julian, special friend Kenny Bird of Garretts Bend, along with many nieces, nephews and a hosp of loving friends.   Walter has now joined the angels with praise of “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty.”

Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 pm Monday evening , June 8, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek. Funeral service will be conducted 1:00 PM Tuesday June 9, at the funeral home with Rev. Jackie Miller and Craig Gillenwater officiating. Burial will follow in Hayzlett Cemetery, Garretts Bend.

Robert H. Lowery

Robert H. Lowery, 77, of Alum Creek departed this world on Monday June 1, 2009.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ousleen and two brothers, Charles and Johnny.  He was retired from Union Carbide Tech Center after 48 years of service and was a member of the Independent Missionary Baptist Church at Alum Creek.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Patsy;  Daughters: Melody (Johnny) Roberts and Cindy Lowery both of Alum Creek Susan (John) Brininstool of Charleston; Son: Bobby (Teresa) Lowery of Lawrenceville, GA; Sister: Mary Maroney; Brothers: Jim (Donna); Clarence “Pug” (Dottie); Melvin and Jerry; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren.

Service will be 11:00 AM Friday, June 5, at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be at Graceland  Memorial Park So. Charleston. Family and Friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Kennawa Dr. Charleston, WV 25311.

Betty L. Cassle

Betty L. Cassle, 82 of  Sumerco  passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at CAMC General as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident on Saturday May 23.   She was preceded in death by her husband Malen C. (Slick) Cassle, Jr., parents, Emory and Roxie Pauley and sister Francis Pauline Pauley.

She was a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Sod, and also attended several other area churches. She had a bachelor of science degree in education from Morris Harvey College and was a retired school teacher from Lincoln and Kanawha Counties with over 30 years of service.   Betty is survived by her daughter Reda (Louie) Tackett of Yawkey, grandaughter Courtney Tackett of Yawkey, sister Doris (Doug) Runyan of South Charleston niece Deb (Ralph) Stephens and family of LaVergne, Tennessee; and nephew Greg (Ginny) Runyan and family of Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 30, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Oshel Bell officiating. Burial will be held at Orchard Hill Memory Gardens Yawkey. Family and friends may gather from 6 to 8 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Harold Lee Lacy

Harold Lee Lacy, Sr., 80, of Sumerco, went to be with Lord on Thursday, May 21, 2009 after a long illness.   He was a member of Operating Engineer Local 18 for 45 years and a retired coal miner.  He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Yvonne Lacy of Sumerco; Children, Rachel (Kenneth) Priestley of Sumerco, Harold (Natalie) Lacy, Jr. of St. Albans, William (Cathy) Lacy of Sumerco, and Laura Bortey of Charleston; eight grandchildren, Austin Lacy, Karah Lacy, Brianna Priestley, Brooke Lacy, Bradley Lacy, Heather Lacy, Jacob Priestley and Corey Smith; one brother, Bernard “Kayo” Lacy of Julian.

Services will be at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Family and friends will gather one prior to service on Sunday at the funeral home.

Michael Ray Smith

Michael Ray Smith, 48 of Alum Creek went home to the Lord Wednesday May 20, 2009 at Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.   He was a former employee with Helrohn Insulation in Cleveland, and a construction worker.  Michael is survived by his mother, Margaret Bozak, brothers, Jimmy and Danny, sisters, Anna Bell Smith Slate, Sheila Horvath, Montana Hager, Kathy Smith and Irene Dotson, and a host of nieces and nephews.  A private graveside service will be held at Midkiff Cemetery at a later date

Athalene M. Pauley Tackett, 89, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, May 17, 2009.  She was the oldest member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Sod and was preceded in death by her husband Kelley, son Ted and two grandsons Everett Tackett and Kenny Marker, parents Otto H. and Essie P. Pauley, and 2 brothers William and Odie Pauley.

Athalene is survived by her 2 daughters, Judy (Tommy) Quintrell and Sue (Mike) Kingrey both of Alum Creek, siblings, Dona Phillips, Otto Pauley, Helen Moore, Arthur Pauley, Emma White and Virginia Lewis. 9 grandchildren, Teresa (Russell) Breedlove, Pam (Joey) Dunlap, Melinda (Bobby) Ray, Jimmy Marker, Teddy (Cheryl) Tackett, Scott Kingrey, Todd (Cheryl) Kingrey, Michael (Annie) Quintrell, and Jeff (Jennifer) Quintrell. 13 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Thursday, May 21 at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek with Pastor Clarence Hutton, and Teddy Tackett, Jr. officiating. Burial will be held at Orchard Hill Memory Gardens at Yawkey. Family and friends will gather from 5 to 8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Clarence D. (B.O.) Adkins 69,  of Griffithsville died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in So Charleston after a long illness.   B.O. served 2 years in the U.S. Army. He was a retired sprinkler fitter with Brewer & Co of WV, a member of Local 669,  Griffithsville Masonic Lodge AF & AM # 71, Duval VFD and was a Charter member of the Duval Hunting Club.

He is survived by his wife: Dianna; Brothers: Fred & Frank Adkins both of Yawkey; Sisters: Evelyn Oxley of Davis Creek, Pearl Watts of Dunbar, and   Hazel Hill of Spring Hill;  Several Nieces, Nephews and a host of friends.

Services will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Rd., Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell Officiating.  Burial with Masonic Gravside Rites conducted by the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens at Yawkey,. Friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St Jude Childrens Research Memorial Program at 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942

Margaret Jane Hughes

Margaret Jane Hughes, 71, of Hurricane, formerly of McCorkle, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at home after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnith E. Hughes and parents, John and Alice Totten.

She was retired from Union Carbide and the Charleston Marriott.  She was a Christian.   She is survived by her children, Sharon Oldaker of Alum Creek, Richard Hughes of St. Albans, Susan Hughes of Charleston, Teresa Hudson of Alum Creek, Scott Hughes of Cross Lanes, Tammy Woodall of Hurricane, and Rosalyn Anderson of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Eric, Jeremy, Chris, Nichole, Jason, Shaun, Emily, Robbie, Amber, Jade, and Maddie; great grandchildren, Damian, Malia, Drew, Aiden, and Emma; brothers, Franklin Totten, Jimmy Totten, Paul Totten, Bobby Totten; sisters, Elizabeth Hill, Ann Sparks, Edythe Williamson and  Joyce Wallace.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Family and friends may gather from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
