Denzil Turley

Denzil Turley, 72, of McCorkle, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at his home after a long courageous battle with cancer.   He was the owner/operator of Turley Excavating at Alum Creek and was preceded in death by his parents Maywood and Lena Jane Turley and 2 sisters Wiladean Smith and Doris Brown.   He is survived by his 2 daughters Pam (Donald) Phillips of Alum Creek and Teresa (Scott) Argento of So. Charleston. 3 grandchildren, Jason Phillips, Sarah and Nathan Argento,  sister, Gatha Estep of Winfield and twin sister Lyndel Shaffer of Yawkey.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday July 17 at McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church with Pastors Russell Wright and Larry Ross officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek.

Biolly Joe Johnson

Billy Joe Johnson, 76, of Alum Creek passed away Tuesday July 14, 2009 at Thomas Memorial Hospital So. Charleston after a long illness.   He was a retired CPA having worked for several auto dealership in Charleston, was former owner of Ballard Road Market at Alum Creek and was a Army veteran.    He is survived by:  2 brothers: Michael (Jeanetta) Johnson of Logan and David Johnson of South Point, Ohio; Niece: Ashlee Johnson of Logan and Special friend: Buzzy Huffman of Alum Creek and many cousins.   A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Andrew J. (Jack) Stowers

Andrew J. (Jack) Stowers, 84, of Alkol passed away Friday, July 10, 2009 at home with his family by his side after a long illness.  He was a retired chemical operator from FMC; also retired from Nationwide Ins. & Lincoln Agency.  He served 2 terms as Lincoln County Commissioner;  a WWII Navy veteran; and a member of Griffithsville Church of Christ.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Reva Stowers; brothers & sisters, Denzil & Moss Stowers, Ruth Cash and Gail McMellon.

He is survived by his wife: Ali Reba; Daughter: Rhonda Kendall of Cross Lanes; Son: Sam (Gloria) Stowers of Cross Lanes; Grandson: Jonathan Kendall of Louisville, KY; Sister-in-law: Jackie Sue Stowers of Alkol; Brother-in-law: Paul D. McMellon of Charlotte, NC .

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Minister Kim Matthews officiating.  Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park with Military Graveside Rites by Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768.  Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.  The family wishes to express a special “thank you” to the Hospice caregivers, Sherry Wooten and Sally Starkey; also to Kitty Dunlap, Michelle Price and Kay Cummings for their dedication, help and care of Jack.   In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hubbard House c/o HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25312-2536.

Roger Paul Barker

Roger Paul Barker 61, of St Albans died Thursday July 9, 2009 at CAMC General Division after a short illness.   He was a former employee of Teague & Son Contractors and was preceded in death by his parents Harvey Taft and Martha Alice Harvey Barker.

He is survived by his son: Roger P. Barker Jr. (Shannon); 2 daughters: Martha Ann Eggleton (Owen Woods) all of St. Albans;  Melissa Sue Loftis (Steve) of Sissonville; grandchildren: Jessie, Tacoma & Ireland Barker, Dee Dee and Stevie Loftis;  Companion: Freda Lovejoy and her children, Tina Harbert (John), Greg Lovejoy and Merrell Lovejoy Jr. (Casandra), Grandchildren: Colton, Alexis, Cody & Cassidy Lovejoy and Dakota Harbert; 9 Brothers: Jerry Lee Barker of Emmons, Dallas E. Barker (Karen) of Tornado, Johnny H. Barker (Mary) of Ridgeview, Harvey T. Barker Jr. (Iris Kay) of Scott Depot, Michael P. Barker (Lana Rochelle) of Foster,  Bobby L., Ronnie L. Barker (Tessie) and Arlie E. Barker (Reginia) all of Ashford.  Mark W. Barker (Teresa) of Marmet; half brother: Dennis Barker (Girlie) of Cleveland ; 2 Sisters: Beatrice Barker (Samuel) of Cleveland and Debra S. Lutsy of Tornado.

Services will be 1:00 PM on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Rd.,  Alum Creek with Pastor Daymond Estep officiating.  Burial will be in Barker Cemetery at Ashford.  Friends will gather form 6 to 8 PM on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the funeral home.

Anna Kathleen Allen

Anna Kathleen Allen, 83 of St. Albans went home to the Lord Saturday, July 4, 2009.

She was a long time member of the Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by 5 sons; Gary Allen, William Allen, Jeffrey Allen, Jerry Lee Allen and Patrick Allen, and many grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday July 9 at the Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church with Pastors Bruce Young and Homer Fink officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest donations be made to Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church Build Fund 3926 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane, WV 25526.

Nola Faye Saul

God called his angel Nola Faye Saul 82 of Alkol home on June 22, 2009 after a short illness. She was a life-long member of Sycamore Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Alkol where she was a Sunday School teacher and a BYF director for many years. She was known to those who loved her as “Maw Maw” Faye.   She was preceded in death by her loving husband Ralph Saul; her parents Ova and Dallas Miller, brothers Jerry, Carylon and Eddie.

She is survived by her daughters Sandy Owen and Sharon (Paul) Jones; sister Dorthy (Herman) Abbott, brothers Cyril (Margaret) Miller, Charles (Dora Ann) Miller, Bill (Mearlene) Miller and Donald (Mary Jane) Miller. Grandchildren Kim Fleck, Tracy Owen, Beth (Russell) Miller,and Darren Owen. Great grandchildren, Moregan and Elissa Johnson, Austin and Millenia Owen, Zoey Fleck, Brooke and Paige Brogan, and many loving nieces, nephews and beloved friends.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Thursday June 25 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Gene Pauley and Robert Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery at Alkol. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to service at the funeral home.

Gloria Jean Chafin Duncan, 61, of South Charleston, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009 at home after a long illness.   She was preceded in death by her husband Dale; daughter, Denise Freeman and two sisters, Edith Nunn and Patricia Barker.   She was a former beautician and a former employee of Krogers in South Charleston.

She is survived by her daughter, Jessica Dawn France of South Charleston; brothers, Jack Chafin of Alum Creek and Skip Chafin of North Carolina; granddaughters, Danielle and Angela; great grand- daughter, Ivy.   Service will be 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 24, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Randy Stanley officiating.  Entombment will be at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.  Family and friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Evelyn Miller

Evelyn Miller, 81, of Sumerco, WV  formerly of Washington, DC died Thursday, June 18, 2009 at CAMC General Division.   She is survived by: son & daughter-in-law: Richard & Janet Davis..   A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Teays Valley Memorial Gardens, Winfield. Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, is in charge of arrangements.

 

Lucy Elaine Songer Adkins, 75, left her earthly existence to go into the arms of the Lord Monday, June 15, 2009 after a long illness.  She will be sadly missed by family and friends.   She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Adkins; step-son, James Adkins; parents, George & Lucy Songer;brothers, Gene & Chancey Earl Songer; Grandson, Jeremiah and great granddaughter, Harlee.

She is survived by:  4 Children: Jane Midkiff, who was her devoted caregiver and protective Angel; Steve and Randy Midkiff and Rhonda Adkins;  Sisters: Evelyn Blankenship and Faye Kinder; Step-children: Glen, Alice, Judy and Charlie; Grandchildren: Zeke and Eric Midkiff, Heather Adkins and Melissa Hinzman; Great Granddaughters: Heidi and Chloe Midkiff.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM  Friday, June 19, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. Bob Otey officiating.  Burial will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek.   Friends may gather 1 hour prior to the service.  She will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Julia K. Roberts

Julia K. Roberts, 89, of South Charleston died peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Chateau Grove Assisted Living, Barboursville, WV.   She served as past secretary for the State Grange Association.  She was a member of Humphrey’s United Methodist Church, Tornado.   Julia was predeceased by her parents Otis & Lillian Harold, two sisters: Ruth Peterson and Grace Ellette, and a Grandson, James Whitlock

She is survived by her husband, Paul, of 70 years; Daughters: Susan Roberts, Port Lavaca, TX ,  Phyllis (Conrad) Fitzwater, South Charleston, WV,  Mary Roberts, Mt. Juliet, TN,  Judy (Greg) Dilger, Venice, FL,  Brother: Douglas Harold, St. Petersburg, FL,  and Sister: Dorothy Rogers, Logan, OH; 9 Grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; and 5 Great Great Grandchildren

Funeral Services will be 1:00pm  Wednesday at Humphrey’s United Methodist Church,  Tornado with Pastor Beth Peters officiating.  Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston, WV.  Friends will gather Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV 25003.
