Dennis Ray Nicholas

Dennis Ray Nicholas, 77, of Tornado, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, September 23, 2021, at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital.

Dennis was a longtime, faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, St. Albans. He retired from Charleston Steel and was a former employee of Trojan Steel. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and gardening. He served his country as a member of the United States Army Reserve.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lillian Nicholas and his wife, Carolyn Sue Tudor Nicholas.

Dennis is survived by his children & their spouses, Wayne & Rebecca Nicholas of Tornado, Brian & Kim Nicholas of Michigan, and Paula Fleck of Florida; brother, Cephas Nicholas of Tornado; grandchildren, Craig Nicholas of Tornado, Carson, Carter, & Kara Nicholas of Michigan, Ashley Adkins & Allyson Fleck of Florida.

Service will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 27, 2021, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, St. Albans, with Pastor Craig Gillenwater officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Virgil A. Brogan

Virgil A. Brogan, 79, of Sod, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, September 20, 2021, at CAMC Hospice.

He was a retired engineer from CSX with 39 years of service. On Friday, September 17, 2021, Virgil accepted Jesus into his life and the following Monday, joined the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Sue.

Virgil was also preceded in death by his parents, Daner and Julia Brogan; sister and brother-in-law, Evetta and Lowell Pauley.

He is survived by sons, Tim (Regina) of Sod, and Mark (Jill) of Weston; grandsons, Jacob (Brittany) Brogan, Colby (Laura) Brogan, and Isaac Brogan (Haley Adkins); great grandchildren, Emery, Garrett, and Sutton.

Service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 25, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Robert McCallister officiating. Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Annie Price DeBord

Annie Price DeBord, formerly of South Charleston died on Thursday, September 16, 2021 in Shepherdstown, WV.

Annie was born on February 5, 1929 to Blake and Minnie Price and was the last surviving member of her birth family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. “Jim” DeBord (1975); her son, Charles E. DeBord II (1979); and her grandson, Drew M. Miller (2009).

Annie is survived by her sons, Michael (Renee) of Conway, SC; Jeffrey (Liz) of Martinsburg, WV; Kevin (Candy) of Germantown, TN; daughters Brenda (Thomas) Miller of Charlotte, NC; April (Robert) Schumacher of Princeton, WV and daughter-in-law Beverly Cardwell DeBord of St. Louis, MO.  She leaves 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Service will be at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 1pm, with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating.  Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service – masks optional.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Burlin Winchell Eskew

Burlin Winchell Eskew, 81, of South Charleston, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 12, 2021, after a long illness. He was born January 19, 1940, at Brounland, WV.

Burlin was preceded in death by his parents Kyle and Edith Cantley Eskew of Walton, WV; two brothers, Ervin and Alford of Alum Creek; and one sister, Vergie LaBranch of Kissimmee, FL.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice “Sue” Eskew; three sons, Roger and Charlene of Scott Depot, Gary Sr. of Davis Creek, and Michael and Melissa of Spring Hill; one sister, Linda Bailey of St. Albans; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastors Tommy Roberts and Charles Sisk officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Extra hugs and kisses to grandson Gary Jr. for all his help with Popaw!

Ritchie Robert Cooper

Ritchie Robert Cooper, 49, of Nitro, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

Ritchie was a 1989 graduate of Duval High School and a former juvenile correction officer with the State of WV at Robert L. Shell Juvenile Center. Ritchie loved the outdoors and camping.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Narci Cooper and great nephew, Caleb Skeenes.

Ritchie is survived by fiancé, Shelly George; daughter, Jordan Cooper; father; Bernard Cooper; sisters, Lynda (Ken) Lawrence and Elizabeth Turner; brothers, Alan (Rita) Cooper and Bruce (Linda) Cooper; nieces and nephews, Nikki Hughes, Chelsie Shaffer, Zach Cooper, and Blake Cooper; great nieces and nephews, Olivia Hughes, Jalen Chanel, and Tylin Turner.

A private service has been scheduled. Ritchie will be laid to rest at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey, WV.

Deborah Lynn Vanhoose

Deborah Lynn Vanhoose, born December 4, 1954, joined her Heavenly throng on Friday, September 3, 2021, ending the suffering from lung cancer.

The eldest of four children of the union of James B. and Wanda J. (Bailey) Vanhoose. Deb was the leader of the group, always planning her siblings’ activities in their childhood days. Her education started in elementary school in Fairmont and continued through middle school in New Martinsville then to John Adams and George Washington High School. She performed in several extra-curricular activities and was a majorette at JA & GW. She furthered her education at WVU. Deb took her learning seriously and maintained a 4.0 GPA through her college training. She once gave a professor a difficult time who gave her a B+ until he changed it to an A. She was very protective of her grades. She worked for Union Carbide for 20 years before returning to the profession she loved and earned a Master of Psychology from WVSU.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Brad and is survived by her parents; her sister, Sue; brother, Steve; and most importantly her favorite, Deborah’s nieces and nephews, Lanique, Grant, Taylor, Olivia, Maggie, and Ryan who will miss her dearly.

Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston, and a reception afterwards with the family.

Wayne Noel Sowards

Wayne Noel Sowards, 93, of 77 Tango Road, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021.

Wayne was a member of Alum Creek Church of Christ. He was a master brick mason whose work can be seen throughout Lincoln and surrounding counties. He was a member of Bricklayer’s Union Local 9 and served his country in the United States Army during WWII.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 71 years and 8 months, Shella; children, Dianna (Herb) Yeager of Moundsville, WV and Earnest (Ellen) Sowards of Alum Creek, WV; grandchildren, Sarah (Gary) Meyer, Gary Yeager, Micah Sowards, and Aaron Sowards; great grandchildren, Samantha Meyer and Robert Meyer; and several nieces and nephews.

A private family graveside service will be held at Lincoln Memorial Park, Hamlin, WV.

Nancy Ann Webb

Nancy Ann Webb went to her mansion on the hilltop Sunday, August 29, 2021, where she joined her husband Foster and grandson Eric Alley. Nancy was the daughter of Charles and Katherine Lynch.

Nancy was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter, sister, and aunt. She never met a stranger and loved everyone no matter what type of person they were.

Nancy loved the Lord, loved being a Sunday School teacher for years, working with the elderly, and working at Sams. She loved to work in the garden with her husband and then canning their produce. She had a passion to rock many babies to sleep, cook, and sew.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Foster; grandson, Eric Alley; parents, Charles and Katherine Lynch; brothers, Charles Jr., Rolland David, Sammy, and Raymond; sisters, Phyllis Bishop and Josephine.

Surviving are children, Denise (Rommie), Ronda, Kelli Jo (Keith), and Will; grandchildren, Frosti, Bradley, and Bethany (Bo); great grandchildren, Randy Joe, Sonny, Colton, Harli, Cayd, Iziah, Lynix, Resci, Remmy, Charlee, and Maddie.

Service will be held with her husband, William Webb Sr. at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 2, 2021, at Webb-Means Cemetery in Yawkey.

Opal B. (nee Siders) Price

Opal B. (nee Siders) Price, age 81 of Huntsburg, OH, formerly of Mentor, OH,
passed away August 28, 2021 at home. She was born December 15, 1939, in
Ward, WV to the late Leslie and Eloise Siders.

Opal was a member of The Church of Christ in Mentor, OH for 54 years. During those years, she was a Sunday school teacher and worked tirelessly in community service. She worked in the food industry for over 50 years. Her hobbies included traveling and gardening. She visited all 50 states in her lifetime and raised a garden every summer. She enjoyed cake decorating, puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Hurley; daughter, Tina (James)
Layne; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 2 brothers; 4 sisters and other loving family.

She was preceded in death by her son, Terry Price; parents, and 4 brothers.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday September 2, 2021 at the
Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060. The family will receive friends from 11 am until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at the Price Family Cemetery in Quinland, WV. Local arrangements entrusted to Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek, WV.

Roy G. Lowther

Roy G. Lowther, 94, born October 18, 1926, in Cambridge, OH, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 25, 2021, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, KY.

Roy grew up in and around Spencer, WV, where he worked for his father’s oil and gas drilling company. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1945. After high school, Roy joined the army, and spent a year in Germany. When he returned, he became reacquainted with the love of his life, Evelyn Cline, and they were married on October 18, 1947.

In 1951, Roy started working for Union Carbide where he trained to become a chemist. While working, he attended WV State College and earned a degree in chemistry in 1972. He retired in 1986.

Roy was an active, highly respected of member of Highlawn Baptist Church in St Albans since 1961, where he served in many capacities. Roy was a friendly, affable person who liked to keep busy. He always had a “project” going either at home or church.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Lowther and Evelyn Eddy Lowther; his beloved wife of 71 years, Evelyn W. Cline Lowther; his sister Vera Lowther Litton; and his brother Russell E. Lowther.

He is survived and missed by his family, daughter Sandra G. Lowther Clancy, sister Rita Lowther Borousk of FL, son-in-law Charles A. Clancy and granddaughter Caitlin E. Clancy.

The memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Highlawn Baptist Church in St Albans with Reverend Jason Robbins officiating. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park in St Albans. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the church.
