Easter “Alice” Miller, 85, of Sod, WV, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Miller, parents Woodrow and Jenny Burnette, brother, David Barnette, sister, Barbara Barnette, son, Pat Miller, and granddaughter, Felicia Miller.

Alice is survived by her sons, John Miller, Wayne Miller and Ralph Miller, and daughter, Delta Carpenter, brothers, Tommy and Clarence Barnette and sisters, Margaret McCormick and Phyllis Greene. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended church family.

Graveside service will be 2:00pm Monday, September 19, 2022, at Lively Cemetery, Sod, with Rev. Paul Little officiating.

Orpha Jane Eskew

Orpha Jane Eskew, 84, of Emmons, WV, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at CAMC – Memorial Hospital, Charleston, WV. Orpha gave her heart to the Lord and she is now with her Lord and Savior. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Washington Eskew, and parents, Dewey & Mollie Chandler Minner, son, Jessie Lee Eskew, and brothers, Hansford, Jerry and Stanley Minner.

Orpha served as custodian for Alum Creek Elementary for 24 years.

She is survived by her daughters, Janet Eskew, Violet Eskew, Marlene (Michael) Graley, Sherry (Chris) Hodges, and son, Gordon (Karen) Eskew. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tricia, Ashley, Michael, George Allen and Alex, four great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Griffin, Titan, and Aspyn, and sisters, Barbara Holstine and Judy Holstine.

Service will be 1:00pm. Saturday, September 17, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, with Pastor Michael Graley officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park, Alum Creek. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Charles “Ken” Poling

Charles “Ken” Poling, 86, of South Charleston, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022, after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Aileen and Neil Stalnaker and brother, Roger.

He retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital and was also a volunteer there after his retirement. He was a member of Mountain Heights Church. He loved his church and his church family.

Ken is survived by his wife of 43 years, Maggie; and sister, Trudie (Lane) Hanson of Weeki Wachee, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Mountain Heights Church, South Charleston with Pastor Brian Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain Heights Church, 1201 Chestnut Street, South Charleston, WV 25309.

Donald C. Whitten

Donald C. Whitten, 73, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, of Griffithsville, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022, at CAMC Memorial after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by a precious son, Kenny Whitten, his parents, Kenneth and Hazel Bays Whitten, brothers, Barry and Roger Whitten, and sister, Sharon Baisden.

Donald had a love for sports and excelled as an athlete. He co-owned and operated Whitten Brothers Grocery for many years. He loved his family above all else and had the kindest and most generous heart. Everyone who knew him loved him.

Donald is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlotte Cummings Whitten, daughter, Sue McComas of Griffithsville, sons, Donnie (Shawnda) Whitten of Yawkey and Michael Whitten of Griffithsville, brother, Ronald (Katherine) Whitten of Griffithsville, grandchildren, Nick Whitten, Brady (Sydney), Carson, and Carly McComas, Annie (Justin), Garrett, Michael II (Cheyanne), Wade, and Joe Whitten, and Alex Prince of Uneeda, 3 great granddaughters and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home with Pastors Rick Cooper and Darrell Searls officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may gather 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Paula Lois Ellison

Paula Lois Ellison, 56, of Hamlin, WV, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at her home.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Evelyn & Eugene Ball; son, Joe (Melissa) Pauley; sisters, Diana Coffman and Patty (Howard) Pauley; brother, Matt (Katye) Pauley; two grandchildren, Dalton and Isaiah; nieces, Grayce, Anita, and Amy; nephews, Garrett, Tyler, and Scott.

Services are private and Paula will be laid to rest at the Old Pine Grove-Anderson Cemetery, Sumerco.

Okey C. Justice

Okey C. Justice, 72, of Madison passed away Friday, September 2, 2022, at CAMC Memorial Division.

He was a coal miner.

Okey was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta; parents, Gilbert & Macel Justice; brothers, Ernie, Boyd, & Londis; and sisters, Margie, Mabel, & Vadie.

He is survived by his children, Lora (Greg) Cochran, Okey Justice, Jr., Nichole Workman, & Wendy Boggess; brother, Kessell (Shirley) Justice; sister, Artina Pauley; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

In keeping with Okey’s wishes, he will be cremated and there are no services scheduled.

Steven James Tackett

Steven James Tackett, 44, of Bomont, WV, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2022 at CAMC – General Division of a heart attack. He was preceded in death by his mother, Daisy Tackett and step-father, Frankie Sowards, and brother Joshua Lee Miles.

He was currently employed with Safe Movers and formerly employed with National Roof Coaters.

Steven is survived by his fiancée, Nikki Taylor, and her son, Gage Hill. He is also survived by his brothers, Duane and Ronald Hicks all of West Virginia and also many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Service will be 7:00pm Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, WV. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

According to Steven’s wishes he will be cremated following the service.

In lieu of flowers contributions made toward funeral expenses will be appreciated.

Samuel Gary Wright

Samuel Gary Wright, 39, of Alum Creek passed away Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Sam was a 2001 graduate of Duval High School and a former employee of Serenity Point, Williamson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Christopher Ray Wright.

Sam is survived by his mother, Vicky Wright; brother, Michael Wright; niece, Kylie Wright; nephew, Paxton Wright; girlfriend, Molli Ferguson. He is also survived by an extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

There are no services scheduled at this time.

Anna Mae Painter

Anna Mae Painter, 94, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, August 18, 2022, at Harmony at Southridge.

She was a homemaker, former Eastern Star, and founding and lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Anna Mae was preceded in death by her husband of over 70 years, Paul B. Painter; parents, Wesley Fairbanks “Bob” and Grace Jones Fisher; and brother Earl Ray Fisher.

She is survived by children, Joyce Galloway, Richard Painter, Mona Painter, and Lou Weisberg; brother, Randy (Janet) Fisher; sister-in-law, Joyce Fisher; grandchildren, Andria, Elijah, Billy and Michael; great grandchildren, Asa, Heidi, and Aria.

The family will receive friends at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 21, 2022, at Curry Funeral Home and the service will follow at 4:00 p.m., with Chaplain Pete Thompson officiating.

The committal service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 22, 2022, at Emma Chapel Cemetery in Liberty, WV.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Kanawha Hospice, Village Caregiving, the staff at Harmony at Southridge Memory Care Unit, and her independent caregivers over the years.

Decker K. Elder

Decker K. Elder, 87, of South Charleston, WV died Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at home.

She was born November 1, 1934, near Romney, WV and was preceded in death by her husband, George B. Elder, her parents, Nellie and William Kuykendall, and her brother, Mike Kuykendall. She is survived by sisters, Edith Kuykendall Crane of Mount Pleasants, South Carolina and Mary Kuykendall Weber of Middle Grove, New York, and four nieces.

Decker attended a 2-room grade school, passed the diploma test, and was graduated from Romney High School as valedictorian in 1952. She was graduated from West Virginia University in Morgantown in 1956 with a major in chemistry and a minor in math. During her school years, she worked on a sugar corn farm, as a waitress in a restaurant and a hotel, in a fruit packing shed, and two summers at Union Carbide in a laboratory. After finishing school, she joined Union Carbide Corporation in South Charleston, WV where she met her future husband. She worked in Research and Development at the Technical Center for most of her career in analytical and process development and spent the last two years in production at the South Charleston plant. She and her husband worked in Ponce, Puerto Rico for Union Carbide for a year and a half. In 1986, she retired and then worked part time until 1994 at Carbide. After retirement, she became a volunteer tutor for students and friends in math and chemistry which she enjoyed very much. She liked gardening, mowing grass, and anything to be done outside.

At her request, there will be no services and her ashes will join her husband’s ashes in the hay field and woods where they lived for many happy years.
