Glenn A. Paul, 85, of Sod, died Monday, February 18, 2002 at Putnam General Hospital after a short illness.

He was retired from Appalachian Electric Power Co. and was a Baptist.

He is survived by his: 3 Daughters: Shirley Spangler of Chester, VA; Bonnie Lamb of Greer, SC; Terri Morton of Hurricane, WV;
1 Son: Scott Paul of Sod, WV; 1 Sister: Anna Marie Siwy of Lancaster, CA; 4 Grandchildren: Paul Spangler; Jeffrey Lamb; Kelli Totten; Lindsey Paul.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Keith Torman officiating. Burial will be held at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 from 7 to 9 PM at the funeral home.

Lucy Hensley, 72, of Sod, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 18, 2002.

She attended Cobbs Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

She is survived by her: Husband: Harold; 3 Daughters: Joan Cecil of St. Albans; Tamara Holstein of Sod; Jennifer Hensley of Sod; 2 Brothers: Laudrick Holstein of Sod; Burl Holstein of South Point, OH; 3 Granddaughters: Stephanie Dunlap, Shannon Bayne, and Olivia Holstein; 2 Great Grandchildren: Kevin Dunlap, Jr. and Jilyian Bayne; Nephew: Emil Cecil.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 from 7 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

William Jack Frye

William Jack Frye, 70, of King, North Carolina died Friday, February 15, 2002 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston Salem, North Carolina after a long illness.
He was retired from Hastings Co. in King where he worked as an auto starter rebuilder and was an Army National Guard veteran.

He is survived by his: Wife: Amy Elizabeth “Betty” Frye; 1 Son: Jack Frye, Jr. of King, NC; 2 Brothers: Paul Frye of TN; Boyd Frye of WY; 1 Sister: Veraldean Eggleton of Houston, TX; Half Sister: Thelma Toney of VA.

Services will be 2:00 PM Monday, February 18, 2002 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor David McVey officiating. Burial will be in Midkiff Cemetery, Sumerco. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.

Bernard B. Hall, 80 of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, February 14, 2002, at home after a long illness.

He was a member of the Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Sod. He was retired from Jackson Drilling of Hamlin, an U.S. Army Veteran of W WII and a member of the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768.

He is survived by his: Wife: Ruth; Son: Gary Hall of Chazleston, WV; 2 Grandchildren: Wendy Beaver and Scott Hall; 2 Great Grandchildren: Shawn Beaver and Katlyn Beaver.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Sunday, February 17, 2002 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Clarence Hutton officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 will be held in Midkiff Cemetery, Sumerco. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Jollie Gale Huffman

Jollie Gale Huffman, 53 of Alum Creek, went home to be with the Lord ,Thursday, February 7, 2002, at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, New Hampshire after a short illness.

He was a supervisor for Williams Co. and a member of the Boiler Makers Local 667. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

He is survived by: Wife: Sue; Daughter: Amy Huffman of Alum Creek, WV; 2 Brothers: Pete Huffman of Sod, W V; Terry Huffman of Sumerco, WV; 2 Sisters: Agatha Pauley of Alum Creek, WV; Rosa Lea Dinardo of Columbus, OH.

Graveside services will be held at Orchard Hill Memory Gardens, Yawkey on Wednesday, February 13, 2002 at 12:00 PM with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Benny Padilla Post 4768. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to The VFW Benny Padilla Post 4768, Rt. 7, Box 290 South Charleston, West Virginia 25309. Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Brooks W. Mason

Brooks W. Mason, 72 of Charleston, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 7, 2002 at Banbridge Care and Rehabilitation for Dunbar.

He was retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways in Morgantown. He served as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War and was a member of the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768. He was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnet C. Mason.

He is survived by: Daughter: Maria “Chiki” Mullins of Roswell, GA; 2 Sons: Brooks Kevin of San Diego, CA Mark R. of Charleston, WV; 1 Brother: Cliff Mason of Charleston, WV; 3 Grandchildren: Adrienne Mullins, Kyle Watkins Mason &Olivia Ruth Mason.

Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 10, 2002 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor David Bess officiating. Burial will be in Forks of Coal Memorial Park with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768.. Joyce Lynn Pauley Kirk, a life long resident of Alum Creek, West Virginia, died at home Monday, February 4, 2002 of cancer.

She was a member of the Alum Creek Church of Christ. Joyce was a graduate of Duval High School and was an employee of Carrier Mid-Atlantic. She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Pauley of Alum Creek.

Joyce is survived by her: Husband: David M.; Mother: Mary Pauley of Alum Creek; 2 Brothers: Larry Pauley of Sod; David Pauley of South Charleston; Nieces: Betsy Walker of Cross Lanes; Lesli Smith of South Charleston; Charity Honaker of St. Albans; Nephews: Craig Pauley of Farmville, VA; Bruce Pauley of South Charleston; Father and Mother-in-law: James and Lois Kirk of Hurricane; Sister-in-law: Cathy Dunlap of Inverness, FL.

Services will be held Thursday, February 7, 2002 at 1:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Minister Gerald Watts and Minister Justin Imel officiating. Arlene Prater Lawrence

Arlene Prater Lawrence, 83 of South Chazleston, died Saturday, February 2, 2002.

She was born July 16, 1918 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, the daughter of Sarah Martin Prater and John Wesley Prater. She moved to the Kanawha valley in 1939.
Arlene worked for the Chimney Comer Tea Room, The Daniel Boone Hotel Coffee Shop and she owned the Mound Restaurant. She was a devout Christian and long time member of the Ruth Community Church, and presently, a member of Abney Street Church of God, St Albans.

She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Paul Lawrence, Sr. and son Stanley Paul Lawrence, Jr.

Arlene is survived by: 4 Daughters: Nancy Jane Pauley of Nitro; Victoria Jean Thaxton of Pt. Pleasant; Rose Mary Bolanos of Largo, FL; Candy Lynn Thomason, Bradenton, FL; 4 Sons: Jack of St. Albans; David of South Chazleston; Daniel of Clearwater, FL; Roger Timothy of Hurricane; 31 Grandchildren; 55 Great-grandchildren; 1 Great-great granddaughter.

Services will be held at the Abney Street Church of God, St Albans at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 with her son, Pastor Jack Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Friends may call from 7 to 9 PM on Monday, February 4, 2002 at the Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Robert L. “Bob” Gawthrop

Robert L. “Bob” Gawthrop, 84, of Yawkey went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

He was a retired engineer with Consolidated Gas Supply of Clarksburg with 45 1/2 years of service. He attended Business College in Clarksburg. He was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge No. 71. He was preceded in death by his son, Douglas Gawthrop.

He is survived by: His wife: Edith; 2 Sons: David Ray Gawthrop of Ashland, KY; Stephen Robert Gawthrop of Hamlin, WV; Daughter: Becky Walker of Scott Depot, WV; Daughter-in-law: Lois Gawthrop of Nitro, WV; 10 Grandchildren; 4 Great Grandchildren; 3 Step-Grandchildren.

Services will beheld at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Oshel Bell and Pastor Henry Estep officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Hamlin, with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by the Griffithsville Lodge No. 71.
