Edward M. Collins

Edward M. Collins 84, of Alkol, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston after a short illness.

He was a WWII Army veteran, a farmer, worked in the coal mines and as a Lincoln County school bus driver. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will always be remembered as “Papaw Ed”.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Hazel “Marie” Chandler Collins; four children, Danny and wife, Janet of Alkol, Jackie and wife, Brenda of Morrisvale, Diane Adkins of Alkol, and Kenny at home; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; half brother, Lenzil Walls of Logan and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Randall Kinder officiating. Burial held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey. Friends may call on Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Deborah Ann Adkins

Deborah Ann Adkins, 45, of St Albans went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 13, 2007 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was a loving, devoted wife & mother who will be greatly missed. She was a member of Bible Center Church.

Preceding her in death are her parents Jackie & Beaulah Barker.

Services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 16, 2006 at the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 2097 Childress Rd. Alum Creek with Pastors David Jones and Steve Neill officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park at So Charleston,. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 PM on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Hubbard Hospice House at 1001 Kennawa Dr., Charleston, WV 25311,.

Bobby Jack Martin

Bobby Jack Martin, 73, of South Charleston died Friday, January 12, 2007 at home surrounded by his wife and family after a short illness.

He was a member of the Dunbar Masonic Lodge  AF & AM  #159; Scottish Rite Bodies;  the Eastern Star and served as a Chapter Dad for the Demolay’s.   He was a reitred iron worker and member of  the Iron Workers Local #301 with 30 years of service.  He also served in the U. S. Air Force.

 He was preceded in death by his parents: Willard & Templeton Martin; son, Bobby Jack II; and brother, Tommy Martin.

 He is survived by wife:          Donna

Rebel L. Toney

Rebel L. Toney, 86, of Griffithsville, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 12, 2007 at her daughter’s home surrounded by her loving family.  She spent 73 years serving the Lord and was a kind and loving lady that will be missed by many.

Rebel was preceded to Heaven by her husband, Millard Toney; parents, Rev. Thomas and Gertrude Dolan Purdy; sisters, May Martin, Mable Turner and Emma Wenck; brothers, Woodrow and Odell  Purdy.

She was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church where she loved to sing in the choir.  She was a former alto singer for the Starlight Quartet, the Beech Grove Four and a former member of Beech Grove Baptist Church Ladies Circle.  She retired from Boone County Board of Education after 30 years of service.  She was a member of the Boone County Teacher’s Retirement Board and the WVA Teacher’s Retirement Board.  She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 121 of Madison.  She will always be known for the spectacular cooking and fabulous hand stitched quilts.

She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Katherine and Ronald Whitten of Griffithsville,  Hazel and Dennis Clark of Portsmouth, Ohio; son and daughter-in-law, Willard “Stubby” and Patricia Toney of Douglasville, Georgia; granddaughters, Renea Whitten Christian (Bobby) of Griffithsville, Diane Clark Wilson and Karlene Clark Lute (Dale) of Lucasville, Ohio, Tanya Toney Frith of Douglasville, Georgia; grandsons, Ronnie Whitten (Jeannie) of Pinch, Jeff Toney (Belinda) and Brian Toney (Tanya) of Douglasville, Georgia; great granddaughters, Kaylee Christian of Griffithsville, Davonda Compton of McDermont, Ohio, Crystal, Nikki, Abigail and Amelia Toney, Tiffany and Heather Frith of Douglasville, Georgia; great grandsons, Duran Wilson and Jason Lute (Amanda) of Lucasville, Ohio; great great granddaughters, Shasta and Kiane Piatt of McDermont, Ohio; sister, Cora Hudson of Beaumont, California; special and long time friend, Junior Dingess of Hamlin; many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, January 14, 2007 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Oshel Bell and Rev. Henry Estep officiating.  Burial will be held in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Friends may call on Saturday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Kenneth G. Dunlap

Kenneth G. Dunlap,73, of Sod, died Wednesday, January 3, 2007, after a short illness.

He was a retired foreman for Pauley-Paving-Construction. He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Emory & Clara Dunlap; son, Jimmy; two sisters, Eleanor Dunlap & Sandy McCallister.

He is survived by loving daughter & son-in-law, Gloria Brown & Preston; precious granddaughter, Lee Ann Brown; additional granddaughters, Denease Callahan & Jana Midkiff; four sisters, Zulema McClure & Ardith Dunlap of Sumerco, Sherry Thomas of Yawkey, Bonnie Roberts of Griffithsville; three brothers, Marcel Dunlap of Alum Creek, Lenzil & Denzil of Van; three great grandchildren.

The family would like to express a special “thanks” to caregiver Michelle Woodall.

A private burial was held Thursday, January 4, 2007 at the Old Pine Grove Cemetery, Yawkey, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.

Frank Johnny Ferrell

Rev. Frank “Johnny” Ferrell Jr., 74, of Alum Creek, died Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at the VA Hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio after a short illness.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his three daughters, Dedria Byrd of Sod, JoAnna Smith of Charleston and Misty Cooper of Yawkey; one son, Matthew Ferrell of Alum Creek; one brother, Robert A. Ferrell of Lompoc, California; ten grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at the Temple Baptist Church, 412 21st Street, North Charleston with Pastors Lawrence Slater and Clyde Cooper officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768, PO Box 6, Alum Creek, West Virginia 25003.

Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, is in care of arrangements.

Billy H. Thaxton, 72, of Griffithsville went home to be with the Lord Sunday, December 31, 2006 at Valley Health Village, South Charleston after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Kay Thaxton, parents, Okey and Mable Thaxton; sister, Bethel Haynes and brothers, Bernard and Buddy.

Surviving are his son and daughter in law, Tim and Gail Thaxton of Yawkey; special granddaughter, who he dearly loved, Kately Thaxton; three sisters, Bessie Gandee, Bonnie Fralick and Beatrice Patterson all of Charleston; two brothers, Basil of Charleston and Ballard of Farmville, Virginia.

Services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at the Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Walter Means officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery at McCorkle. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Terry C. Roberts, 69, of Alum Creek, died Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at Valley Health Care of South Charleston after an extended illness.

Terry was a Christian. He was a retired mechanic with 23 years service for Don’s Garage in Alum Creek and ten years for E.E. Moore Construction, South Charleston.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years: Doris

Dr. Vernon William Gillenwater

Dr. Vernon William Gillenwater, 69, of Powder Springs, Georgia, formerly of Lincoln County, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Christmas day 2006 after a short illness.

He was a Church of God minister and had served as a missionary in Greece, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the Karibati Islands for the Church of God. He was a graduate of Lee University, Cleveland, Tennessee and of the Church of God School of Theology where he earned his doctorate of theology. He was a Vietnam War Air Force veteran, retired from the U. S. Air Force and Lockheed Aircraft Corp. He was an active chaplain for the Civil Air Patrol in Atlanta and a volunteer chaplain at Well Star Cobb Hospital. He was currently employed by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency for the Department of Homeland Security. He was a 1955 graduate of Duval High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Mildred Gillenwater.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl McCutcheon Gillenwater; five children, Anthony of Colleyville, TX, Brian of Cleveland, TN, Monica Frazer of Chandler, Arizona, Victor of Douglasville, GA, and Nicole Gillenwater of Powder Springs, GA; two sisters, Lenora Sutphin of Charles City, VA and Pam Webb of Clarksburg, WV; six grandchildren, Bethany, Kristen, Lauren, Matthew, Evan and Christina and one great granddaughter, Alexis Gillenwater. .

Services will be 2:00 PM on Friday, December 29, 2006 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, conducted by his two sons, Anthony and Brian. Burial with military graveside rites by the Benny Padilla VFW Post 4768 will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod. Friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
