Thomas R. Stevens, Sr., 79, of Alum Creek, went home to meet the Lord on Friday, March 16, 2012 at Hospice West, South Charleston, WV after a short illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Jean Hill Stevens, daughter, Linda Sheryl Stevens Clark; parents, William Wirt and Daisy Dunlap Stevens; brothers, Marion, John & Waldo Stevens; sister, Katherine Stevens Schneider Green and long time friend Benny Huffman.
He attended Lincoln County schools; he was a 67 year member and former trustee of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church where he loved to sing in the choir and also served as a Sunday School teacher. The church is located at Sod, and was named after his grandfather the Rev. Samuel O’Dell Dunlap . He was a 52 year member of Heat & Frost Insulators Local #80, Winfield, WV with the last 12 years employed by A&I Company, So. Charleston, retiring in late 1970’s. Then, with his wife, Lois, owned and operated Sod Exxon Hardware, Tom’s Car Wash and, with son, Tom Stevens, Jr., Stevens Funeral Home, Madison until 2005. He was a 50 year member of the Griffithsville Masonic Lodge #27 AF&AM.
Left to cherish his memory, are his wife, Helen Barrett Smith Stevens; daughters, Beverly (Dale) Pauley, Gail (Randy) Curry and Debbie (David) Bailey; son, T.R. Stevens, Jr. son-in-law, Tommy Clark; stepchildren, Philip (Nancy) Smith and Richard (Kim) Smith; sister, Betty Brumfield, brother, Robert (Vicki) Stevens; grandchildren, Corey (Dawn) Clark, Kristin (Chris) Miller, Heath (Kelly Bright) Curry, Haley (David) Miles, Leslie (Clyde) McKnight, Rockne (Holly Hill) Stevens, Olivia (Tim) Beck , Joey (Jennifer) Bailey and Adam Bailey; step-grandchildren, Heather (Corey) Richardson, Haley and Maggie Smith; great grandchildren, Ian, McKenley, Jakob, Noelle, Gavin, Vivian, Sarah, Jacob, Colt, and Kylie Joy; step-great grandchildren, Tucker and Harper and very special friend, Ralph Caudill; and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.
Service will be 2:00pm Monday, March 19, at Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Sod with Pastors Butch Leadman and Phil Suiter officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 P.M. Sunday, March 18, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church – Missions Fund, P.O. Box 60, Sod, WV 25564.
