Lewis B. Wills

Lewis B. Wills, Jr., 69, of Charleston departed this life Tuesday, August 29, 2017 after a sudden illness at home.

He was owner and operator of Lew’s Mountaineer Gun Smithing; a lifetime member of the NRA and a former Hunter Safety Inspector.

Lew loved animals. He rescued many cats and spent many hours watching his herd of deer in the hills.  His passion was feeding the hummingbirds and going to flea markets.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Jean Wills and brother Larry Wills.

He is survived by his wife, Marietta; children, Shannon Wills, Lisa Murphy and Greg Daniels; grandchildren, Calynn and Malanya Wills, Ashley and Kaitlyn Murphy, Krista, Amanda and Angie; brother, Steven (Vickie) Wills; and several nieces and nephews.

Lew will be greatly missed by a host of friends, especially Jeff, David and Jack and also his fur babies, Panther, Midnight, Callie, Prissy, Streak and Talker.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Monday, September 4, at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association, 1248 Greenbrier St., Charleston, WV  25311.

French “Tinker” DeBord

French “Tinker” DeBord, 79, of Charleston passed away Monday, August 21, 2017 at Hospice House of Charleston.

French was preceded in death by his parents, Rhoda Mae and French DeBord, brothers, Talmadge DeBord, Jim DeBord, and Gene DeBord, sisters, Fay Bell, Sherry DeHart, Freda Eskew and  Virginia Midkiff.

After serving in the U.S. Army he had a 35 year career with Verizon Communication as a building engineer.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 56 years, Sue, sister, Joyce Pauley of Florida and nieces and nephews who have supported him throughout his illness with loving letters, cards and phone calls.

French loved working in their flower gardens. He would dig the hole and Sue would plant the flowers.  He always enjoyed their travel and summer vacations at the beach.

French was a very spiritual person who loved God and wanted to do his will. He was a very kind and generous person who loved spending time with his family and friends.  He was very well known for his heavenly homemade chocolate fudge which he personally delivered to special friends and family.  He loved to play basketball, laugh and enjoy life.

The family would like to thank Hospice for the special care he received.  In lieu of flowers a donation to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25387-2536 would be appreciated.

A celebration of life will be 11:00am Thursday, August 24, 2017 at the Bible Center Church Charleston with Pastor Chad Cowan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jerry Lee Barker

Jerry Lee Barker, 75, of Emmons Road, Alum Creek passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV.

He retired from Union Carbide. Jerry loved to raise a garden.

He is survived by his children, Sherra Barker (James Perdue), Sherri Barker and Stevie Barker; step-children, Wanda Jordan, Gene Angel, and Ronnie Angel; brothers, Dallas (Karen) Barker, Johnny Barker, Harvey (Iris Kay) Barker, Michael (Lana) Barker, Bobby Barker, Ronnie (Tessie) Barker and Mark (Teresa) Barker; isters, Beatrice Barker and Debra Lusty; and grandson, Daniel Angel.

A graveside service will be held at a later date.

 

Harley David Meadows

Harley David Meadows, 24, of Ashford passed away Friday, August 11, 2017.

He is survived by parents, Sharon Graley and Randy Meadows; twin brother, Dylan and brothers, Gage Meadows and Scott Reagan; and grandparents, Kathy Legg and Larry Barker.

A memorial service will be 7:00 pm Friday, August 18, 2017 at Dartmont Park.

Jason Hunter Ward

It is with great sadness for the Ward family to announce the death of a wonderful son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend.

Jason Hunter Ward, 34 years old of Cross Lanes, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Wednesday,  August 9, 2017.

Jason was a 2001 graduate of Nitro High School. He then attended Marshall University and West Virginia State University. Jason was a part owner of AAA Carpet Cleaners that he shared with his father.

Jason is survived my his father, Paul Ward of Cross Lanes, his mother, Connie Hunter Walker of Titusville, FL, and his sister, Kara Lea Ward of Cross Lanes. Along with many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jason is also survived by numerous friends that he considered family.

Services will be held at Curry Funeral home in Alum Creek, WV. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 13, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. The service will be officiated by Pastor Dwight McClure. Remembrances will be given by Randy Saunders, Chris Johnson, John Lackey and Beth Dunlap.

Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Memorial Park in Alum Creek, WV.

 

Charles Henry Tully

Charles Henry Tully, 83, of Spurlockville, WV, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2017, at Boone Memorial Hospital, Madison, WV.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, sister, Lucille Hill and parents, Charles & Freda Tully.

He was a heavy equipment mechanic with Case Equipment.

He is survived by his children, Charles W. (Thelma) Tully; Gale (Averill) McClure, Joey (Vikki) Tully, Pam (James) Hill, Jeff Tully, Angie (Mark) Adkins; brothers, Mike (Janet) Tully and Kenneth (Brenda) Tully; sisters, Louise Smith, Eleanor (Jerry) Burris, Barbara Wills, and Brenda Glick; 15 grandchildren and  18 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at the Tully Family Cemetery, Alkol, with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating.  Visitation will be  from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 14,  at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road,  Alum Creek, WV.

John Edward Midkiff

John Edward Midkiff, 86, of Alum Creek went home Monday, August 7, 2017.

He was a retired pipefitter from Union Carbide Corp.

John served in the U. S. Marine Corp for more than 30 years, serving during the Korean War, the Vietnam War and  the Reserves.

John was preceded in death by his son, Johnny.

He is survived by his daughter, Jill Harless; son, Jason Midkiff; brothers, Ned and Homer Midkiff; sisters, Jane Blankenship and Barbara Linville; and grandchildren, Jessica Wood and Lindsey Harless.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Turley Cemetery in Alum Creek with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

 

Opal Ruby (Vickers) Clark

Opal Ruby (Vickers) Clark, 82, of Alkol went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 1, 2017.

She was a child of God for over 40 years and a member of the Left Fork Baptist Church. Opal was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Next to God, she loved her family more than anything.

Opal was born on September 6, 1934 to the late Glen and Arnie Vickers. She was preceded in death by her sister, Bonnie Price; brothers, Ronnie and Donnie Vickers; daughter-in-law, Judy Clark; and great granddaughter, Abigayle Fleshman.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Victor; sons, Rocky (Glenda) Clark and Tony (Wilma) Clark of Alkol; daughter, Shirley (Bob) Connolly of Turtle Creek; grandchildren, Carol Lee Miller, Wendy Perschau, Dody (Nathan) Bragg and Wendy (Joey) Boardman of Alkol, Clint (Sheila) Clark of Columbus, OH, Angela (Brent) Fleshman of Culloden, Amanda Clark of St. Albans and Jordan (Laura) Clark of South Charleston; eleven great grandchildren, Kyle, Katie, Danielle, Blake, Ethan, Emma, Joseph, Brielle, Dylann, Avery and Gracen. Opal also leaves brother, Earl (Geneva) Vickers of South Carolina, Denver Vickers of Alkol and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Left Fork Baptist Church at Alkol, with Pastors Randall Kinder and Roger Reed officiating. Burial will follow at the Clark Family Cemetery, Alkol. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Curry funeral home.

 

Gary Dean Allen

Gary Allen PhotoGary Dean Allen, 65, of Dunbar passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 at home.

He was a retired master mechanic from Love Lexus. Gary was an avid fisherman, he loved camping and was a strong Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Kathleen Allen; and siblings, Sharon, Jeff, Patrick, Eric, Renee, Michael and Lee.

Gary is survived by 3 daughters, Melissa Minger of NC, Megean Allen of St. Albans and Lindsay Allen of Dunbar; grandchildren, Dylan, Jackson and Mia; and brothers William “Bill” and Jason Allen.

A memorial service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Gerald “Kenny” Ryan

Kenny RyanGerald “Kenny” Ryan, 80, of Alum Creek went to be with the Lord Friday, July 28, 2017.

He was a 1954 graduate of Duval High School, where he loved and played in all sports.  Kenny retired from FMC with 35 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark; parents, Fred and Flossie Ryan; brothers, Curtis and Eugene; sisters, Iola, Lois, Gertrude and Ada.

Kenny is survived by special friend, Lois Harper; daughter, Marilyn Preston; grandchildren, Melinda Stanley and Chris Preston; sister, Lou Cassle; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Curry Funeral Home in Alum Creek with Pastors Chester Bird and Oshel Bell officiating.  A private burial will be held at a later date in the Mays Family Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
