Irene Penington

Ruth Irene Pennington, 87, of Alum Creek went to be with the Lord Monday, January 26, 2015.

She retired from WV Dept. of Motor Vehicles License and Title Division and was a member of Left Fork Missionary Baptist Church.

Irene was one of ten children born to Shelt and Dollie Stone Egnor, who predeceased her along with her sisters, Agnes, who died as a toddler, Lena Griffith and Reva Mae Hicks; brothers, Marvin, Raymond, Ronald and Junior Egnor.

She is survived by daughter, Beverly Cedele Igo of Alkol; sons, Randy (Mary) Pennington of Alum Creek and Rex (Debbie) Pennington of St. Albans; sister, Mary “Brownie” Hager of Left Fork; brother, Kerman Egnor of Florida; 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm Wednesday, January 28, at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek.  A graveside service will follow at 2:30 pm at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.

Kathleen S. Keeney

Kathleen Keeney 3Kathleen S. Keeney of Alum Creek, WV went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 24, 2015 after a long illness.  She celebrated her 100th birthday on November 4, 2014 with friends and family.

She was a charter member of the Independent Missionary Baptist Church in Alum Creek where she served faithfully.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Belmont Keeney; parents, Eliza and Pomp Turley; sisters, Erna Miller, Edna Tavernaris, Nona Turley, Grace Adkins and Georgia Turley; brothers, Frazure Turley, Elva Turley, Carl Turley and Denver Turley; and son-in-law, James Lowery, Sr.

She is survived by her son, C. B. Keeney, Jr. and wife, Patsy; daughter, Donna Lowery; 5 grandchildren, Jamey Lowery and wife, Liz,  Scott Lowery and wife, Amy, Amanda Cummings and husband, Rod, Polly Smith and husband, Scott and Chuck Keeney; 9 great grandchildren, Steven, Kaitlin, Julianna, Trey, Caroline, Joshua, Noah, Mattie and Shellie; two great great grandchildren, Chase and Mackenzie; sister-in-law, Elaine Bird and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Monday, January 26th at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.  Visitation will be from 7 to 9 pm Sunday at the funeral home.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Golden Living Nursing Home in Glasgow, WV for the wonderful care and concern they gave to our mother.

James Adair Akers

James Akers 1 James Akers 2James Adair Akers, 91, of South Charleston, born June 15, 1923 died Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at home surrounded by his family.

He lived a long and full life; born during the depression the 9th of 10 children.  He was drafted at age 19 and served in the U. S. Army during WWII.  His tour took him to the European Theatre where he fought in the Battle of The Bulge.  After  returning to the USA,  he married and worked at FMC for 35 years as an operator.  Adair was a skilled craftsman who could build anything ranging from a house, a grandfather clock, furniture or a picture frame.  He took pride in all he did.  He was a Christian and a quiet man with a strong work ethic who loved his family dearly.

Adair, known to many as PawPaw Akers, was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Mae Turley Akers and his daughter, Linda Sue Akers-Buckley; parents, Charlie and Virgie Akers and 8 siblings.

He is survived by his children, Richard “Dale” (Ellen) Akers, Marvin Akers, Christy and Micky McClure; grandchildren, Jeri Sue (Dorsel) Thomas, Scott (Jacqueline) Buckley,  Adam (Kristi) Akers, Jeffrey Akers, Sarah (Pat) Kelly;  Michael (Carrie) McClure, Kelly McClure-Kinder; 9 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson; and sister, Alberta Haga.

Funeral service will be 3:30 pm Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Southridge Freewill Baptist Church, 814 Ruthdale Road, South Charleston, with Pastor David Cooper officiating.  Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum with military graveside rites conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768.   The family will receive friends 2 hours prior to the service at the church.

Stephen Lee Casto

Stephan CastoStephen Lee Casto, 63, of South Charleston, born on September 21, 1951 in Charleston, WV,  went home to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at CAMC General Hospital.

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”.  2 Timothy 4:7.

Steve’s unwavering faith in Christ was an inspiration to anyone who knew him.  Never once in the many years of illness did he ever question why or have doubts about where he was going.  Steve was an Eagle Scout and graduated from South Charleston High School.  He retired from the WV Division of Labor with over 34 years of service.  He was a member of the Dunbar Mountain Mission Church for 12 years, where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent and also on the church board.  Steve was also a member of the Gideon’s International.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary F. Casto.

Beloved husband and father, Steve leaves behind his wife of 30 years, Vicky and their children, twin daughter and son, Stephanie and Jordan to cherish his memory, as well as his special aunts, Myrtle Jean Young and her family, and Belle “Abby” Canfield; and faithful friends, Janice James, Herman Nicely and Betty and Gooley Derrick; brothers and sisters-in-law, who dearly loved him, Frank (Debby) Hicks, Bill (Pam) Hicks, Judy (Jim) Turley and Peggy Hart and their families.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 pm on Friday, January 23rd,  at the Dunbar Mountain Mission, 605 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV, 25064, with family visitation from 4:30-5:00 pm.   Burial service for friends and family will begin at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 24 at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston.  Following the burial, there will be a service to celebrate Steve’s life at Dunbar Mountain Mission Church in Dunbar, WV, with Pastors Ray Parsons and Phil Conn officiating.  A dinner with the family will be held after the celebration service in the Activities Building at Dunbar Mountain Mission Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a special fund set up to help cover education expenses for Stephanie and Jordan.  Donations should be payble to Vicky Casto and sent to Kelly Whitlock, c/o Huntington Banks, 900 Lee St., Charleston, WV 25301.  Donations may also be made at any Huntington Bank branch location.

Barry Lewis Whitten

Barry WhittenBarry Lewis Whitten was born November 2, 1942 and met his Heavenly Father Sunday, January 18, 2015.

Barry was a long-term resident of Woodville, WV, where he was owner and operator of Whitten’s Feed and Seed for 55 years; and a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodville.  He was born and raised in Lincoln County and graduated from Duval High School.

Barry was one of five children born to the late Kenneth Whitten and surviving mother, Hazel Whitten and he was the beloved husband of Chiquita Whitten for over 24 years. He will be forever remembered by his children, Leah Whitten, Barry Franklin (Lori) Whitten, Deah (Rusty) Allen, and stepson, Harold Lee (Heather) Hughes; treasured grandchildren, Zack and Dakota Whitten, Cassidy, Tori and Maci Allen and Eli Hughes; brothers, Roger, Ronald (Katherine) and Donald (Charlotte) Whitten; along with countless friends and family who were blessed to know him.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Thursday, January 22, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Dwight McClure officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.

Violet June Pauley (Baisden)

Violet June Pauley (Baisden) passed away January 11, 2015 in North Royalton, OH.

Beloved wife of James; loving mother of Jim and Tim(Nicole); sister of Katherine Blevins and the late Kenneth,  Alfred and Lewis Baisden and Nell Jean Marcum and Mary Lou Fowler; grandmother of Tyler and Mitchell Pauley.

Visitation at Babitt Funeral Home, North Royalton, OH, will be Wednesday, January 14, 2015 from 5 to 8 PM.  Funeral service will be held Saturday January 17, 2015 at 1:00 PM at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek, WV, with Pastor John Hatfield and Barry Baisden officiating. Burial will follow at Forks of  Coal Memorial Park.

Family and friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service.

Belinda M. Dunlap Smith

Belinda SmithBelinda M. Dunlap Smith, 44, of Pine Grove, Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston,  E.R. after an apparent heart attack.

She was a Christian and attended Eden Baptist Church. She loved God, her family and friends.

She was preceded in death her parents,  Billy and Betty Dunlap.

She is survived by her husband of eighteen years, Chris; sister, Alice (Barry) Meadows; brothers, Billy (Susan) Dunlap, Frederick (Nancy) Dunlap, Alvie (Mary) Dunlap; nephews, Mike, Chris, and Riley; niece, Amanda; great niece, Kynzleigh and great nephew, Justin.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Sunday, January 11, 2015  at Curry Funeral Home,  2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Rick Cooper and Butch Brogan officiating. Burial will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery.  Family and Friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made towards funeral expenses.

Harold Rodger Vickers

Harold Rodger Vickers, 63, of Ravenswood, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston.

He is predeceased by his father, Harold;  and his grandparents, Herbert and Arizona Price and Willie and Jerusia Vickers.

He served in the US Navy during Vietnam on the USS Hancock (CV-19).

He is survived by his mother, Marie;  two brothers, Bruce Wayne and wife, Frankie,  and Bobby; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 2:00pm on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Jimmy Lawrence officiating.  Burial will follow at Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey with military graveside rites conducted  by the Madison VFW Post.  The family will receive friends 1 ½ hours prior to the service.

Linda Jo Perdue Cain

Linda CainLinda Jo Perdue Cain, died on January 5, 2015, and on angels wings she left the pain and suffering of this earth for the peace of Heaven in the arms of her Lord.

Born July 22, 1941, she was the second daughter of Hyla and Raymond Perdue of Dartmont, Boone County.  She lived most of her life in West Virginia, except for over 20 years she lived in Hickory, North Carolina.  Having moved back 2 years ago to take care of her dying sister.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carolyn Williams; brothers, Donnie, Terry, Jimmie and Mutt Perdue.

She is survived by her husband, Dean Cain; daughters, Sherri (Jerry) Ryder of Kanawha City, Vicki (Armando) Diaz and their daughter, Isabella of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sons, Scotty (Tracy) Perdue and their daughter, Kayla of South Carolina, Sean (Kathy) Perdue of Nellis, Shannon Cain and Stevie Barker of Nellis. and Ricky (Tammy) Byrd  of St. Albans and their children, Ricky, Jonathan, Sara Elizabeth, Caleb and Hart; sisters, Becky Kirk, Darlene (Freddie) Long and Glenna (Teddy) Graley; brothers, Rondy (Teresa) Perdue, Bob and Darcy Perdue; brothers-in-law, Bob, Billy (Sharon) and Stevie (Carolyn) Cain; sisters-in-law, Jean Perdue and Jean Morris; great grandchildren, Emaleigh, Madison and Mason; several nieces, nephews and a lifetime of friends, especially her church family from the Rumble Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Thursday, January 8, 2015 at the Dartmont Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Harold officiating.  Burial will follow at the Holstein Cemetery,  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

David Lee Kinder

David KinderDavid Lee Kinder, 56, of Charleston passed Thursday, January 1, 2015 at home.

He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Kinder, and longtime companion, Sandy Chadwell.

David is survived by twin sons, James and Davidde; son, Mark Allen; daughters, Christina and Paris; father, David (Joy) Kinder; sister, Laura Stanley; brother, Jimmy; 10 grandchildren and niece, Sarah Stanley.
