Brittany Nicole Sowards, 16, of Sumerco was called home to be an angel Tuesday, March 26, 2013.

She was born April 7, 1996 in Bryan, Texas, the daughter of Betty  and Ronnie Sowards.

She was a student at Lincoln County High School where she played tennis; and also  a member of Gear Up  and Natural Helpers.

Brittany was preceded in death by her grandfather, Warren Reynosa and great grandmother, Anna Marie Brandt.

Along with her parents, she is survived by her brother, Rycky; grandparents, Geraldine Moore, Woodrow Sowards, Jr., and Tracy and Kathy Teague; and many other family members and friends will greatly miss her.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Thursday, April 4th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Jackie Miller officiating.  Burial will follow in Lively Cemetery, Sod.  Family and friends will gather from 2 – 4 pm and 6 to 9 pm Wednesday at the funeral home .

 

Steven Alan Gonzalez

Steven Alan Gonzalez, 28 of South Charleston lost his battle to kidney and liver disease Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at CAMC General Division.

He attended South Charleston High School, graduated from U.T.I. Ford FACTS program and was a former employee of Thornhill Automotive.

He is survived by his parents; Luis and Frances Gonzalez, sister; Lucy, nephew; Landin, companion and best friend; Jessica Currence, grandfather; Robert Harris and many other family members and friends.

Service will be 2:00 pm Friday March 29, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Memorial Park South Charleston. Family and friends will gather two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be  made to the family to help with funeral expenses.

Carless J. Turley

Carless J. Turley, 69, of Glasgow formerly of Alum Creek, passed away Monday, March 25, 2013 after a long illness.

He was retired from Multicoat Products in Winfield and a U. S. Army Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly, his parents and several brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda;  daughter, Christie (Jamie)  Thompson of Alum Creek; step children, Dreama (Jason) Adkins, Deana Ferguson and Patsy (Miguel) Frisco; sisters, Christina Pell of FL, Sandy Fitzwater and Sheryl Estep both of Winfield;    grandsons, Tyler and Luke Thompson and seven step grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 1:00 pm Thursday, March 28th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road with Pastors Frank Chapman and Gary Tucker officiating.  Military Rites will be conducted by the Alum Creek VFW Post 4768 following the service.  Burial will be at a later date in Winfield Cemetery.  Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mildred (Millie) Elizabeth Kinder Showen, 86, of Dunbar, formerly of South Charleston,  went home to the Lord Saturday, March 23, 2013.

She was born July 4, 1926 to James Adam and Effie Mae Spears-Kinder in Boone County.   She grew up in Ridgeview, WV and  attended  Ridgeview Elementary School and  Sherman High School, where she met the love of her life, Gene M. Showen of Seth.  After graduation she worked at Western  Union in Charleston.  She and Gene began their  married life  in Ed White, WV.  After Gene left the Navy, they moved  to California for eight years and returned home to live our their lives in WV.    She was a member of Forks of Coal Missionary Baptist Church, Alum Creek.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gene M. Showen; sisters, Artie Kinder Garten and  Nellie Kinder Garten; brothers, Gilbert, Freddie and Edward Kinder.

She is survived by sons, Marc G. (Kathy) Showen, Sr.,  of St. Albans and Jeffrey B. (Joanna) Showen of Valrico, FL; grandchildren, Marc G. Showen II, Crystal Lynn (William) Ragland, Ian Showen and Terri L. Hudson. Five great grandchildren, Christopher L. Strausbaugh, Shawn M. Strausbaugh, Jonathan G. Showen, Kelly Marie Showen and Jennifer Elizabeth Showen.  Many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, March 25th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor B. J. Roberts officiating.  Burial will follow in Forks of Coal Cemetery, Alum Creek.  Friends will gather from 4 to 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home.

The family would to give a special thanks to the staff at MICU General for their kindness and care.

Gary Wayne Smith

Gary Wayne Smith, 61, of Sumerco died Saturday, March 23,  2013 at CAMC after a long illness.

He was a member of the Laborers Local 1353 and a retired truck driver.  Gary was a devoted Christian, as well as, a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Geneva Smith; brother, Ronald Smith and father and mother-in-law, Dewell and Naomi Dunlap.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma L. Smith of Sumerco; daughters, Leslie (Scott) McTheny of Elkview, Treasa (Joe) Vickers of Alkol, Carla Kay Allison of Poca and  Kimi (Jason) Hodges of Red House; son, Chris (Lori) James of Milton; sisters, Corrine Mollohan, Midge (Norm) Justice and Phyllis (Bruce) Cooper; eight grandchildren and many Godchildren and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 26th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating.  Burial will follow at  Wade Chapel in Red House.  Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made for the funeral service.

Lana Louise “Curly” Searls Cornell Gillenwater, 52, of Sumerco, WV passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at home.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jonathan and father, O.J. Searls.

She attended Duval High School and on February 24, 1990, she married Michael Scott Gillenwater.  She enjoyed watching TV and doing word searches.

She is survived by her husband, Mike; son, Todd (Angela) Cornell and daughter, Tiffany (David) Hall; mother, Katrina Searls; brothers, Gary, Bruce, Ron  and Jay; sisters, Sandi Lovejoy and Joyce Armstrong.  Grandchildren,  Zachary Taylor and Caleb Thane Curry, Dakota Reed and Emily Breanna Wiblen and Lily Louise Hall.

Funeral service will be 3:00 pm Monday, March 25th  at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek.  Burial will follow at Lively Cemetery, Sod.   Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Thomas Marshall Dugan

Thomas Marshall Dugan, 84, of Tornado, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013 at home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mae Bowman Dugan; siblings, Kitty Gearhart, Linda Tincher and James Dugan.

Tom  served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War; was a former chemist at Union Carbide and retired Director of Materials Control for the WV Department of Highways.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Kelly Dugan; daughters, N. K. Dugan and Minerva “Mimi” Dugan; brother, Jack (Marilyn) Dugan; grandchildren, Paden Gillispie and twins, Sydney and Andrew Crouch; and great grandson, Aiden Gillispie.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, March 23rd at Alum Creek Independent Missionary Baptist Church 2309 Childress Road, Alum Creek  with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.   Per his request, Tom’s  body was donated  to the West Virginia University / Human Gift Registry.

 

Thelma Ruth Griffith Gillenwater, 88, of Griffithsville,  born February 8, 1925  the daughter of Cornis and Belva Griffith, passed away March 11, 2013 after a long illness.

She was the proprietor of the former Sugar Shack in Griffithsville and  a longtime  member of McCorkle Free Will Baptist Church. She loved her home, family, flowers and reading the Bible.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Edward B. Gillenwater, Sr., brother, Avis Griffith and sister, Wanda Brogan and grandson, Edward Gillenwater III.

She is survived by three children,  Edward B. (Judy) Gillenwater of Griffithsville, Vicki (Jack) Richards of Scott Depot,  and Timmy (Ramona) Gillenwater of Griffithsville;  brothers Frankie Griffith and Paul Griffith both of Sod and Butch Griffith of Alum Creek; 9 Grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 16th,  at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road,  Alum Creek, with Pastors Roe Smith and Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, McCorkle.   Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Alma Elizabeth “Libby” Huffman, 88, of Alum Creek,  went home to the Lord Friday, March 8, 2013 at Thomas Memorial Hospital in So Charleston after a long illness.

She was a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church at Sod and currently attended Hilltop Baptist Church. Libby was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Boyd Huffman and her great granddaughter Lauren Elizabeth Swann.

She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Jack) Dugan of Alum Creek and Carolyn (Ted) Ray of Charleston; sons, Boyd R. “Buzzy” (Carolyn) Huffman,  Jr., of South Charleston and Delbert O. (Paulette) Huffman of Charleston. Nine grandchildren,  seventeen great grandchildren and one great- great granddaughter; and wonderful friend and neighbor Essie Parsons.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, March 12th at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastors Butch Leadman and Jim Lennox officiating.  Burial will follow in Forks of Coal Cemetery.  Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral home.

Richard (Paul) McCune

Richard (Paul) McCune, 73, of South Charleston passed away peacefully at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a 12-year courageous battle with multiple myeloma   cancer.  He was also known as R.P. to a lot of his closest friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, William (Willy) McCune, brother, D.C. Hall and precious grandson Cagun Cole Vandall.

He was founder and owner of McCune Coffee Co.,  for 33 years.  He met a lot of good people and made a lot of friends along the way while  selling coffee.  He was very appreciative of his customers.  He enjoyed going fishing at his camp in Pendleton County with his best buddy Bennie Wade.  He also taught his grandchildren Cruz and Cagun to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors.  He liked sitting on the porch watching the river flow at the camp in Clay County with his wife Linda, daughters, grandson, friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Linda, daughters Diana Vandall, Patti McCune (Kim Sykes), grandson Cruz Vandall, mother, LouAnna McCune, sisters, Sophia Colunga and Ida Mae McCormick, brothers John (Debbie) McCune and Jack (Carolyn) McCune and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be 3:00pm Sunday, March 10,  at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor John Anderson officiating.  Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park So. Charleston.

Family and friends will gather from 1:00 to 3:00pm prior to the service.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Justin Cohen, Linda and staff for guiding Paul through his 12 year journey.
