Rita Gray Allen, 52, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord and Saviour Thursday, December 30, 2010.  She was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church where she was involved in VBS and other youth activities until her illness prevented her from being able.  She was preceded in death by her parents, William & Geraldine Gray; brothers: Lyle & Nathaniel Gray.  

She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Frankie; Brothers: David (Tenna) Gray of Montgomery; ; ark (Reva) Gray of Sod; Luke (Susan) Gray of Dallas, NC; Sisters: Martha Webb and Alice Pritt of Montgomery; Mary Jo (Fred) Bragg of Kimberly; and and a host of nieces and nephews

Service will be 11:00 am Monday, January 3, 2011 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Butch Brogan officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Pine Grove Road, Sumerco. Family and friends may gather from 2 to 4 pm Sunday at the funeral home.   In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made toward funeral service.

Esta Marie Cooper Daugherty

Esta Marie Cooper Daugherty, 84, South Charleston died peacefully, Saturday, Christmas Day, 2010 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a long illness.  She was a Christian, a loving wife and mother; a former secretary at FMC Ordnance Plant and retired from Columbis Gas.

She was preceded in death by her Parents: Everett Cooper and Carrie Mae Linkous Cooper; Husband: Jackie Deloy Daugherty; Son: Larry Alan Daugherty; Brothers: J. Lawrence Copper and E.J.Cooper; Sisters: Glenna Cooper Stone, Thelma Cooper & Effie Cooper Lovejoy

She is survived by:  Son: John D. Daugherty & wife, Audrey Stempel of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; Daughters: Jo Ann Daugherty Spencer & husband, William L. of Ballard, WV; Tracy Sue Daugherty Burdette & husband, Gary – South Charleston, WV; Grandchildren: Cassie Caldwell & husband, Matt; Carrie Daugherty, Jonathan Spencer, Joseph Spencer, Jared Spencer & wife, Dana; Justin Spencer, &wife Courtnie, Jesse Spencer & wife, Lora, Jessica Rabel, Anna Rabel and three  Great Grandchildren: Celsie Caldwell, Cody Caldwell, Keagan Lynch-Kelly.  

Service will be 1:00 pm Friday at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Evangelist P. Timothy Spencer officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston. Friends and family will gather one hour prior to the service.

Nancy Carol Harrison

Nancy Carol Harrison, 58, of Charleston passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.  

She is survived by her husband, Luther; Daughter: Carla (Cliff) Spurlock; Son: William (Lisa) Harrison; 7 Grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; Step-children: Janie, Norma, Tazzie, Carson & Luke; Brothers: David, Charles & Billy Stone; Sisters: Mary Harrison, Helen Hendrick & Patty Burdette.

Service will be 1:00 PM Friday, December 17, 2010 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Rev. Gene Pauley officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park. Family and Friends may gather 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Robert Hissom

Robert Hissom, 48, of Charleston died, December 15, 2010.

He is survived by his: three sisters: Tressie Miller of Charleston, Jane Hissom of Nitro, and Diana Hissom of Calf.; two Nieces: Pamala Lanham and Nancy Hissom; one Nephew: Michael Hissom.

Service will be 1:00 PM Monday, December 20, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Earl Cockran officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Garden of Memories at Sissonville. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Sharol E. White

In memory of Sharol E. White, loving father, devoted Christian and member of Left Fork Baptist Church, Alkol, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty G. White; brothers, John, Bernard, Kenneth, and Ed White; sisters, Mary Campbell, Marie Howard, Fannie Hamilton and Glenna E. Schoolcraft.  

He is survived by:  Son: Terry M. White; Daughters: Patricia S. Hollis and Sandra C. Doak; Brothers: Francis E. White, Jr., and Robert White; Sisters: Barbra White, Kathy Lemon and Noreen Adams; Grandchildren: Dan and Chris Strickland; Mike and Michele White; Amanda and Anthony Mace;  and five  Great Grandchildren.  

Memorial service will be at 5:00pm on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at Left Fork Baptist Church, Alkol, WV, with Pastor Randell Kinder officiating.

David Ray Holestin

David Ray Holestin of Morrisvale, WV, passed away at home at the age of 39 with his family present.  David was born August 31, 1971 to Kenneth Ray (KRay) and Brenda Breedlove Holestin. After his father’s untimely death, David was raised by Brenda Holestin and Raymond (Booty) Fields. He is also preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Ray and Betty Holestin and grandfather Buck Breedlove.

David is survived by his loving wife of ten years, Amber Pauley Holestin, and two wonderful sons, Dalton and Daniel; Mother,  Brenda Holestin and stepfather Booty Fields of Texas; Sister Drema Hill of Texas; Nephews US Army Srg. Kenny Holestin (Jolene) of Fort Knox, Kentucky Matthew (Ashley) Hill; Neice Shawnda Hill of Madison; In-laws: Buddy and Bonita McClure of Alkol; Brother-in-law TJ Meadows of Alkol, WV.   Lots of loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Best friends JJ Mitchell, Joe Tomblin and many other friends.

David loved hunting, fishing, canoeing and four-wheeling. He was known for helping others and touching the hearts of those who knew him. David will be loved and missed by all. John A. Arnold

John A. Arnold, 85, of St. Albans went home to his Lord on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 after a long illness.  He was preceded in death by his parents S.W. and “Minnie” Morton Arnold; brother William Arnold; and sisters Vera Quarrier and Betty Buckland.

He was retired from Union Carbide Tech Center (South Charleston) and the West Virginia State Fire Marshall’s Office. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, the Cherry River Navy, the Paradise Campground in Greenbrier County, and a PDD in the Military Order of the Devil Dogs. He served three years and eight months as a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II and four years with the 20th Engineers of the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He was a member of the Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Arnold; his two daughters Trena Given (Walter) of Charleston and Linda Freeman (Lawson) of South Charleston; his three grandchildren Darrell Freeman (Jamey) of North Carolina, Mary “Megan” Dailey (Matthew) of Charleston and April Martin (Christopher) of South Charleston; his five great grandchildren Julianne Freeman, Viktor and Alexander Dailey, Thomas Stevens III, and Riley Martin; his brother Vernon “Tommy” Arnold of St. Albans; and his sister Barbara Jean Higginbotham of South Charleston. As John himself would probably add, he is also survived by Cindy Holmes, who became not only his caregiver but a very true friend.

Visitation and services will be held Monday, December 27th, with the service starting at 1:00 pm and friends and family gathering at noon, at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Avenue, St. Albans, with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett officiating. Burial will be at Cunningham Memorial Park in St. Albans, where miliary graveside rites will be conducted by the Marine Corps League Detachment #947 of Charleston.  At the conclusion of the service at the cemetery everyone is invited to gather in the fellowship hall at the church. In lieu of flowers and in support of children’s hospitals nationwide, the family requests that donations be sent to the Military Order of Devil Dogs, C/O Richard Given, 1485 Chapps Fork Rd., Charleston, WV 25312.

Orville Edward Means

Orville Edward (Boots) Means, 60 of Charleston passed away Sunday, December 5, 2010 after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Orville E. Means, Sr., and Iva Moore Means, three sisters, Mary Means, Barbara Strickland and Betty Evans, and one brother, Richard Means.

He was a graduate of George Washington High School and retired from the U.S. Postal service Charleston with 38 years of service.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Leon Evans, sister-in-law, Judy Means all of Charleston, and seven nieces and one nephew.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday December 8, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek. Entombment will follow at Graceland Memorial Park South Charleston. Family and friends may gather one hour prior to the service.

Pauline Avis Holstein

Pauline Avis Holstein, 89, of Belle, died peacefully Monday November 29, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital in Charleston after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lonnie Rufus Holstein, parents Elbert and Maude Carper and sister Edith Dotson.

She was born in Lincoln County and after marrying her husband Lonnie they spent the majority of their adult life living in Dupont City and Belle area. During WWII she worked at Owens- Illinois Glass Plant in Charleston and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her sons, Jerry Wayne Holstein; (Kelly) of Charleston and John Niewierowski; (Patti) of South Charleston, sister Gladys Haid of Charleston, grandchildren, Scott Howerton; (Edwina) of Lexington, South Carolina, Lynda Berry; (Bryan) of Nitro, Chris Niewierowski; (Kellie) of St. Albans, great grandchildren; Lakin, Zach, Shannan, Eden, Lexi and Eli. 4 nephews and 7 nieces.

Service will be 1:00 PM Friday December 3, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Rev. John Sword officiating. Burial will follow at Orchard Hill Memory Gardens Yawkey. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 pm Friday at the funeral home.

Pauline will be remembered as a homemaker and for her strong affection for children and animals.

Hassel Woodrum

Hassel Woodrum, 81, of Sumerco, WV was taken to heaven with angels by his side Saturday, November 27, 2010 after a long illness.

He was born May 27, 1929 in McCorkle, he was a long time resident of Sumerco, WV. He was employed by C.J. Hughes Construction Company for 30 years. He was a member of the Yawkey Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Nona Mae; parents, Rocky and Stella; daughter, Lisa Ann, several brothers and sisters, and a great granddaughter Katelynn Gillenwater.

Hassel cherished his family and friends and leaves behind his wife, Mable; Daughters: Jean (Danny) Gillenwater of Alum Creek, Rita (Tom) Smith of St. Albans; Son, Brian (Lori) of Sod; Grandchildren, Chris (Kara) Gillenwater, Monica (Chris) Tharp, Heather (Mike) Jennings, Elizabeth Woodrum and Charlie Woodrum; Great Grandchildren,  Kaylee, Jenna and Jackson Gillenwater; Maelee and Addison Tharp; Chloe Huffman and Paige Jennings; Siblings: Dolly Woodrum of Bear Fork Road; Christine Wilson of Julian; Judy (Bob) Pauley of Tango and John (Marge) Woodrum of Michigan.

Hassel was a faithful, loving and devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was always there to lend a helping hand and give advice. He will truly be missed by many.

A service to celebrate Hassel’s life will be 11:00 am Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Richard McCallister officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memorial Gardens. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6-8 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
