Ruby E. Holstine

Ruby E. Holstine, 87 of Nitro, formerly of Emmons went home to the Lord Monday, October 5, 2009 at the home of her daughter Vivian Holstine.

She was born July 7, 1922 to the late William and Rosa Dawkins Boggess. She was  preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Holstine, to whom she was married  60 years;  daughter, Patty Holestine Didonato,  who passed away June 7, 2008; grandson, Timothy Holstine; and  brothers. Clyde, William, Robert, Claude & Harry Boggess.

Ruby is survived by her children, William (Caroline) Holstine of Emmons, Floyd (Mary) Holstine of Nitro, Lovell (Frankie) Holstine of Emmons, Rachael Holstine of Nitro, Charles Holstine of Emmons, Vivian Holstine of Nitro, Teddy Holstine of Emmons and loyal pet Phoebe, 22 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and several great- great grandchildren.

Service will be 11:00 am Thursday October 8, at Emmons Church of God at Emmons with Pastor Danny Kinder officiating. Burial will be at Barker Cemetery in Ashford. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Curry Funeral Home at 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek.

A very special thank you to all the hospice care workers who helped take wonderful care of Ruby during her last several month.  Another special thank you to “Jimmy” for taking extra loving are of “Mamaw”.

Paul D. Roberts

Paul D. Roberts, 93, of South Charleston, died peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV.

Mr. Roberts was born February 19, 1916 in Kanawha County, WV. He was a 1934 graduate of Washington District High School.

Paul Roberts retired from DuPont as a production foreman with 40 years service. He served as a committeeman for the WV Extension Service and was with Farm Home Administration for 20 years. He was a member of Humpreys United Methodist Church, Tornado; a 60 year member of Masonic Lodge #58, St. Albans, as well as a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite Body of Charleston for 50 years. He was master of Washington Grange for 5 years and a member of the WVA Beekeepers Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Julia Harold Roberts and a grandson James Whitlock.

He is survived by four daughters:

Susan Roberts, Port Lavaca, TX

Phyllis (Conrad) Fitzwater, South Charleston, WV

Mary Roberts, Mt. Juliet, TN

Judy (Greg) Dilger, Venice, FL

Services will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, at Humphrey’s United Methodist Church, Tornado with Pastor Beth Peters officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Chaleston, with Masonic Graveside rites conducted by St. Albans Masonic Lodge 58. Friends and family may gather on Tuesday, October 6th from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Curry Funeral Home, 2090 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV.

The Family wishes to give a special thanks to Dr. Richard Hayes and Dr. Rodney Dean for their kindness and excellent care.

Rabon “Jerry” Holstein

Rabon “Jerry” Holstein, 72, passed away on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009.

Jerry was married to the late Rita “Snookie” (nee Stewart) for over 43 years.  He was the beloved father of Veronica (Philip) Gwiazdowski and adored grandfather of Cory, Cassandra and Courtney  Gwiazdowski.   Brother to Douglas and the late Stella in Ohio; Ed, Norlene and Micky in West Virginia; and the late Milton in Maryland.

Jerry was born in Emmons, West Virginia on September 2, 1937 and lived in the Cleveland area for over 44 years and will return home to rest.

The family  received  friends from 2-6 pm  Sunday, October 4, 2009 at the Bican Bros. Funeral Home, 5215 Fleet Ave., Cleveland, OH.  Visitation will also be held from 4-8 pm  Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, WV.  Funeral service will be 11:00 am Wednesday, October  7, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Arthur Hensley officiating.   Jerry will be laid to rest at Holstein Cemetery, Dartmont.

He is loved dearly and will be missed by many.

Rita Holstein passed away on June 9, 2009.  Her cremains will also be present at both visitations and will be laid to rest in West Virginia on October 7, 2009.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made in Jerry’s memory to The Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 East 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119 .

Artie L. McCallister

Artie L. McCallister, 73, of Sumerco, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Eliza Keeling and two brothers, William and Charles Keeling.

She was a member of the Sumerco Church of God.

Artie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Cleo; three children: Tresa McCallister and fiancé, Ray Boggs of Sumerco; Penny Skidmore (Alan) of Winfield

and Paul McCallister (Mary) of Yawkey; two brothers, Cecil Keeling, Jr. of Scottsmoor, Florida and Orville Keeling of McCorkle

one sister, Marcella Hahn of Sumerco; five grandchildren, Keith Newcomer, Jr., Justin and JesseSkidmore, Gatlin and Sarah McCallister.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at Sumerco Church of God with Pastors Richard McCallister and Butch Loftis officiating.  Burial will be held in Lively Cemetery, Sod.  Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the church.

Sandra K. Huffman

Sandra K. Huffman, 62, of Charleston, WV passed away Thursday, October 1, 2009 at home after a long & courageous battle with cancer.  She was a member of the Ivydale Baptist Church.   She retired from BB&T (formerly Kanawha Valley Bank and One Valley Bank) with 35 years of service.  She was preceded in death by her father, Birt Hitchcock, and mother, Irene Burdette.   She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Huffman; sisters: Betty Jo Pauley (Jim) of South Charleston, Sue Hitchcock of Charleston, Kathy Arnold (Jim) of South Charleston, Bonnie Johnston (Steve) of Piney Flats, TN; a special niece, Jessie Martin (Glen); and a special great-nephew, Gavin Martin all of Scott Depot; and many other family members and friends.

Service will be 3:00 pm Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Clarence Hutton officiating.  Entombment will be in Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, South Charleston.  Friends & family may gather from 6 to 8 pm Friday at the funeral home.The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the dedicated Hospice Care staff who cared for Sandy.   In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W., Charleston, WV 25312-2536.

Paul W. “Jack” McCracken

Paul W. “Jack” McCracken, 83 of St. Albans passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Putnam Care and Rehab at Hurricane.  He was a loving father and grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Lavonne Windom McCracken, wife of 57 years Louana D. McCracken and daughter Kathy Jeane and brother Jerry.  He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law Robert and Debra McCracken of St. Albans, daughter Karen Campbell of St. Albans, grandchildren Kristen Schockey (Steve), Wendi Mathews, Allison Gessel (Jeremy), Christopher Campbell and Michael Campbell all of St. Albans and brothers James “Gee Gee” McCracken (Betty) of Port Orange, Florida, John McCracken (Audra) of St. Albans and sister-in-law Betty McCracken of St. Albans.

Jack was a member of Highlawn Baptist Church for over 53 years were his served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and on other various boards and committees. He was retired from Union Carbide So. Charleston, a Army Air Force veteran of WW II, a former councilman-at-large in St. Albans, was active in youth sports, church basketball, little league baseball coach, baseball umpire, active in attending St. Albans High School sports, was a 1944 graduate of St. Albans High School were he played on the football team.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, October 3, at Highlawn Baptist Church 2304 Jefferson Ave. St. Albans with Pastor Reverend Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial will follow at Cunningham Memorial Park St. Albans. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 9 PM Friday at the Highlawn Baptist Church.

Joyce Ann Priestley

Joyce Ann Priestley, 66, of Hurricane, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at the Select Specialty Care, in Charleston after a long illness.  She was preceded in death by her son, Michael “Mike” Lee Priestley and sister, Ruth Barker.  She was a homemaker.  Joyce is survived by her, husband, Wilburn “Chap”; daughter and husband, Cathy and Wayne Hall of Hurricane; son and wife, John and Carolyn Priestley of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Christine, Wendi, Ashley, Meghan and Michael.

A memorial service will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Steve Hontz officiating.  Friends may gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Edward D. Layne

Edward D. Layne, Sr. 73, of Alum Creek went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 27 at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness.   He was preceded in death by his wife Linda L. Layne who passed away August 27, 2009, son Timothy James Layne, granddaughter, Amy Ann Walls and sisters Maxine Cummings, Lucille Fetherson and Katherine Beckett.   He was a member of the Church of Christ a U.S. Army Veteran , a graduate of WV State College, retired from the WV Dept. of Highways, a member of the Dunbar Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies, the York Rite Bodies and the Beni Kedem Shrine.

He is survived by his three children, Pamela S. (Steve) Walls of Yawkey, Edward D. Layne, Jr. of Alum Creek, and Paul A. (Paula) Layne of Pocatalico, four grandchildren, Danielle Walls, Amber L. Walls Carter, Seth S. Walls and Olivia M. Layne: two great grandchildren, Stevi Cecile Walls Carter and Kendall Nicole Walls. Brother Harry Layne of Orwell, Ohio, sisters Evelyn Taylor of Charleston, Jean Walker of Nitro and Barbarine Frye of Redlands, California.

Service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday September 29, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Minister Richard Runyan officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow at Forks of Coal Cemetery Alum Creek. Family and friends will gather from 6 to 9 PM Monday at the funeral home when a Scottish Rite service will be held at 8 PM.  Many Thanks to Dr. R.E. Hamrick and Staff, and the wonderful staff at Hubbard Hospice House for there care and professionalism.

Mabel Lee Dunlap

Mabel Lee Dunlap, 77, of McCorkle died Tuesday September 22, 2009 at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness.  She was a lifelong resident of McCorkle, Lincoln County.  She was a Christian and attended the McCorkle Freewill Baptist Church.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband Freer Dunlap;  brothers,  Edward, Garrett, Cecil and   Herman Dunlap and sister,  Drexel.

She is survived by her son: Rex Dunlap wife Mary, Daughter: Teresa Brogan & husband,  David all of McCorkle; Brother: Pete Dunlap & wife, Evelyn of McCorkle; Grandson: Todd Brogan; Granddaughter: Madora Gibson & husband,  Bren; and three great grandchildren: Eli, Emma, and Easton Brogan.

Service will be 2:00 PM Thursday,  September 24, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home,  2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek with Pastor Russell Wright officiating.  Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery.  Friends may  gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

William R. “Bill” Clendenin

William R. “Bill” Clendenin, 56, of Brounland, died Wednesday, September 16, 2009, at home.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Deloris Williams Clendenin; brother, Steve Clendenin and sister, Beverly Clendenin.   Bill was a truck driver for Harvey’s Trucking.

He is survived by his wife, Tina; six children, Daniel E. Clendenin, Christopher J. Clendenin, Billy Clendenin, Nick Clendenin, Heather Clendenin, and Michelle Clendenin; brothers, Robert, Jimmy, Harold, Douglas, Frank and Kelly; sisters, Reba Kuhn, Susie Clendenin, Brenda Clendenin, Patty Clendenin, Shelly Clendenin, and Kim; three grandchildren, Trinity, William and Emily Clendenin.

I Thessalonians 4:17…Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Richard Harold officiating.
