Mary M. “Maggie” Holstein, 67, of Ashford, received her angel wings and went home to be with the Lord, on Wednesday, December 3, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dallas and Nellie Estep, and sister, Enola Morgan.

She attended the Rumble Community Baptist Church and the Dartmont Freewill Baptist Church.

She is survived by her two daughters, D.D. and (Rex) Butcher of Ashford; Gayle and Christi of Martinsburg; one son, Chuckie and (Samantha) Javins of Marion, Virginia; one step-daughter, Kimmy and (Joe) Allen of Greenville, South Carolina; two brothers, Lee and Jinkie Estep both of Ashford; two sisters, Linda Barker and Kathy Legg both of Ashford; eight granddaughters, one great grandson, Critter.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Rumble Community Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Harold officiating.  Burial will be held in the Estep Family Cemetery, Ashford.  Friends may call on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rumble Community Baptist Church.

Sudie Christine Justice, 62 of Alum Creek passed away Sunday November 30, 2008 at home after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles E. And Dolly Schultz, sisters Reba Ranauld, Betty Walker and Vonda Price, brother Charles C. Schultz.

She is survived by her sons: Larry “Punkin” (Becky) Thompson, Jr., Frankie (Anita) Thompson, David (Mellisa) Thompson and Ricky “Rat” (Jessica) Thompson. 2 Step-sons, Mark and Chris Thompson. Sister, Alice Mattox, brother Daniel Schultz.

Grandchildren Cody Thompson, Christine Lacy Lee Thompson, Angel Thompson, D.J. and Nick Thompson, Brianna Thompson, Julian and Jadon Thompson, and Brittany Taylor.

A private service will be held at a later date.  Contact family for information.

Lula Belle Chandler, 91 of Hilltop, formerly of Alum Creek, passed away Friday November 28, 2008 at Plateau Medical Center Oak Hill.

She had been a resident at Hilltop Center for many years.

Service will be 2:00 PM Friday at Curry Funeral Home Alum Creek. Burial will be at Forks of Coal Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Samuel Redman

Samuel Redman, 54 of Sod, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, after a long illness.

Sam was preceded in death by his father Howard Redman, Sr. and was a 1971 graduate of Duval High School.

He is survived by his Mother Genevieve Redman of Sod; Son Evan Redman of Sod; Brothers, Howard Junior (Cheryl) Redman and Joseph (Cindy) Redman all of Sumerco; Sisters, Ann (Danny) Justice of Sod, Kathy (Gary) Kersey of Sissonville and Grace (Dallas) Morgan of Sod; Four nieces, Christina, Danielle, Karen, and Julie; Six nephews, Shane, Stephen, Craig, Brandon, Philip and Christopher; Three great nieces, Ashley, Brianna and Shania; one great nephew, Tyler and many  other Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and family who loved him dearly.

Service will be 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Rd., Alum Creek with Pastor Billy Silva officiating.  Burial will be in Lively Cemetery at Sod. Friends will gather 1 hour prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the ICU Nurses at Thomas Hospital and the Hubbard Hospice House.

Ricky Allen Wade, 50, of Griffithsville, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Christian, West Virginia.

He was an employee of Southern Cross Construction, Beckley and a member of the UMWA.

He is survived by his wife, Monica; son, Chad Wade and daughter-in-law, Jasmine Workman of Griffithsville; daughter, Michelle Wade of Ottawa; mother, Erma Wade of Griffithsville; five brothers, Bill, Freeman, Dale, Joe, and Bobby  all of Griffithsville; one sister, Janice Fore of Poca; and four grandchildren, Dustin, Nick, Alec and Olivia.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Curry Funeral Home, Alum Creek, with Pastor Frank Chapman officiating.  Burial will be held in Samson Cemetery, Griffithsville.  A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Opal Jewell Lycans Burchett

Opal Jewell Lycans Burchett, 92, of Hamlin, formerly of Sarasota, Florida passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Lincoln Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Hamlin. She was survived by many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at Pine Shores Presbyterian Memorial Gardens in Florida later this winter.

Artena McCallister Matthews

Artena McCallister Matthews, 87, of Sod went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 22, 2008 at home after a long illness.

She was the daughter of the late, Thomas & Alice McCallister, born May 4, 1921 at Tango, WV, the youngest of 10 children.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John A. Matthews, nine brothers & sisters: Arnold, Dewey, Vaden, Bennie, Georgia, Nellie, Lawrence, Garner & Dessie; grandson, Bill Huffman and nephew Leo McCallister.

Artena became a Christian on January 8, 1936 and was a member of Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church  over 63 years where she directed Vacation Bible School for many years.   She loved church work and teaching Sunday School.  She served as president of the P.T.A, and also the Coal River Baptist Association for 4 years, was a  member of the Home Makers Club.  During WWII while John was in the service, she worked in the defense plant at the South Charleston Naval Ordinance Center.

She is survived by her daughter: Brenda Sue (Pete) Huffman of Sod;

Son: John D. (Nancy) Matthews of Alum Creek;

Funeral Service will be 3:00 pm Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at Cobbs Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Sod,  with Pastor Mike Kordusky, and her nephews, Pastors’ Richard and Larry McCallister officiating.  Burial will be in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens.  Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the church and also 1 hour prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.

Virginia E. Pauley, 72,  of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at Meadowbrook Acres Nursing Center Charleston after a long illness.

She was a retired bookkeeper for several business in Charleston and a member of Bethany Baptist Charleston.

She is survived by her Brother Howard and wife Jane Pauley of Roanoke, Virginia;

Carter Taylor

Carter Taylor 85, of McCorkle, passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at home after a short illness.

He was a retired iron worker a member of Ironworkers Local 301 Charleston and a Navy Veteran of WWII.

He was survived by his brother, Kenneth Taylor of St. Albans; special niece  Susan Wright and many other nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Bo Dunlap for all his help over the years.

Service will be 2:00 PM Friday, November 21, at Curry Funeral Home 2097 Childress Road Alum Creek with Pastor Roe Smith officiating. Burial will be at Mount Tabor Cemetery St. Albans. Family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Shirley Lee Miller Dunlap

Shirley Lee Miller Dunlap , 70, of Sumerco, passsed peacefully and went to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 13, 2008 at home after a long illness.

She was born September 22, 1938, in Lincoln County and was the daughter of the late Oather and Vergie Miller.

She retired from Bob Evan’s and formerly owned Shirley’s Tavern at Alum Creek.

Shirley was preceded in death by her son James (Jimmy) Dunlap;  brothers Elzie and Donald Miller and sister Dottie Miller.

She is survived by her, Daughter Gloria Brown (Preston), grand-daughters Lee Ann Brown, Denease Callahan all of Sod, Jana Jo Dunlap of Charleston; sisters Vennie Holstein, and Lila Miller both of  Alum Creek, Phyllis Dunlap of Charleston, and Wanda Quinn of Missouri; brothers, Bill and Larry Miller both of Sod.

Thank you very much to a very special nephew Ronnie Thompson and wife Gail. Ahost of other nieces and nephews and family and friends.

3 great-grand kids, Niki Jamie and Krystal.

Thanks to Hospice for the wonderful help through our family’s difficult time, Sherry and Sally.
